Disappointed that Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie is promoting her use of surrogacy as compatible with feminism

I loved Purple Hibiscus and recently got through the rest of her books from my library. I really like her novels and especially her GC stance, but I was discussing her on a feminist subreddit recently and her use of surrogacy came up. It's disappointing she promotes it here as compatible with feminism,

Infertility is of course extremely painful, but I don't think that justifies using another woman's womb.

‘I've no regrets welcoming my twins through surrogacy’ - Chimamanda Adichie

“I want more women to feel less ashamed of talking about reaching motherhood through non-traditional means.”

She's a grieving mother, why not leave her alone? Her son died very recently.

To quote Sandi Toskvig, it doesn't matter if children come from Tesco, so long as you love them.

I would happily have been a surrogate when.i was younger, having seen the pain that infertility causes. In many ways I wish I'd volunteered, having seen a marriage of two people very close to me break up because of the woman's infertility. They still love each other long after he had a child with someone else.

So long as the pregnant person isn't being coerced, so what if they want to help someone else have a family.

Criticism of surrogacy is heavily funded by the Christian right as a way of undermining women's bodily autonomy and equal marriage.

Again, you are criticising a grieving mum here. Maybe don't do that.

Can you ever make ONE SINGLE POINT without invoking the CHRISTIAN RIGHT?

It's ridiculous, isn't it?

It's ridiculous, isn't it?

It allows one to play Reddit talking point bingo tho' 😏 and it allows one to see when the latest element of TRA catechism has been released into the wild 🤔

I had a child via surrogacy. A medical procedure went wrong when I was young ( negligence probably though my notes were lost and I got no payout) and I couldn’t carry a child . The doctors I saw around the time promoted the idea of surrogacy ‘don’t worry you can do surrogacy’, you can even get some costs on nhs. We went ahead and had our beautiful dc. At the time I didn’t really think about moralities. Now I am older, yes I do think surrogacy has moral shortcomings. I am not sure if I’d do it if starting out now.
But I also think we need to consider it in the context of an imperfect world. People risk their lives for money in dangerous jobs ( or at least used to a lot in uk ans still do in other countries), mothers go back to work early and are separated from v young babies, preventable diseases kill people because they can’t afford treatment or waiting lists too long, rescuers die helping people who took unnecessary risks. In a perfect world , definitely let’s have no surrogacy. But in the world we have if a woman wants to do this I can’t see it worse than so many other things . And what about the dc? My dc is happy , obviously I wish they’d had the perfect start in life but they couldn’t be here otherwise and so many other dc don’t have the perfect start either for a myriad of reasons

I’m sorry you’ve had such an awful time, and I’m genuinely happy that you have your beautiful children.

But that aside, I think you’re making false equivalencies.

Surrogacy doesn’t centre the needs of the baby. It’s about prioritising the wants of would-be parents and to hell with any distress it causes the baby being taken from the only mother that it knows.

And because of the issues surrounding societal conditioning and coercion, consent isn’t being freely given in the vast, vast majority of cases. Women’s worth is so often judged by what we can do for others, by how kind we are, and by how much we’re willing to sacrifice to make other people happy. Women are subject to enormous subconscious pressure, even when it potentially compromises their own well-being, or even their life.

I’m not trying to be unkind, and I appreciate that things have turned out well for you, which is wonderful. But allowing women to rent out their womb, putting themselves at great risk, and altering their bodies irrevocably- because every pregnancy takes its toll - and of course, putting themselves baby at risk of traumatic separation, I’m never going to be on board with that.

Surrogacy has got us to the point where, to be blunt, men can buy babies.

And they do. And they are.

That reason alone should be enough to shut it down forever.

And put the babies on their chests.

And film the babies looking for milk, on their chests.

And put the video of the baby looking for milk, on their chests, on the internet, laughing at how hilarious it is that the baby is not getting milk.

My husband had our babies on his chest after they were born. It was encouraged as skin on skin contact. Stop being weird.

I guess your baby had access to you too? It wasn't deliberately deprived of its mother.

Helleofabore · 11/10/2026 06:52

I would also imagine that the infant was not making sounds of distress and searching for a breast to feed from that they would never find. While also seeking sensory reassurance from the person who had carried them inside the sound of the voice that they got to know and the heart beat.

Interesting that now this thread’s been revived, the two posters defending surrogacy are also two of the regular posters in favour of gender ideology.

So had mine, but while I was being attended to. They were returned to me as soon as I was able to hold then feed them and it was clear for all 3 that in these first few hours Mum >>>> Dad > any other human.
And they knew their Dad's voice from the pregnancy. Unlike the voices of the surrogacy buyers.

Yes, but anyone who claims that trans-identifying males are women might well also think that said males should be allowed to breastfeed infants if they’ve had the drugs that enable them to lactate. I’m sure there are connections here.

It's part of the Omnicause- a load of positions on various subjects which adherents are expected to sign up to. Bodily autonomy is a key one so surrogacy, trans rights, assisted dying, sex work.......they are expected to support all of them.

Of course. Except bodily autonomy doesn’t extend to being able to get changed without men in the room.
