All females welcome for intelligent discourse and non-harmful comestibles.

For those who would not like to know, my operation was a bilateral Scarf-Akin osteotomy. Though I also see "Scarf and Akin" online.

I don't have a pic of my pre-op feet, but this x-ray is genuinely very close to mine. My current feet are worse.

https://www.kentcht.nhs.uk/leaflet/bunion-scarf-and-akin-osteotomy/

Eek! I might well need my osteophyte shaved down at some point, but it's not as invasive as what you've had.

WearyAuldWumman · 20/04/2026 21:50

I'll just add - because I must - that the only other comment that Mum made about Dad's op was "You know, when your Dad had to use those crutches, they gave him lovely stomach muscles."

Hedgehogforshort · 20/04/2026 21:52

Well feet being the newest topic of conversation, is an interesting development.

As JKR is my best friend i might ask her to consider scripting the threads for a new film, a bit like cheers i was thinking.

it could be a funny read.

Ok both of you, thanks for the info, little too much info (you lost me at "shaved") and I went a bit lightheaded.

Bar gerbils, Macallan, single, neat, please and hurry!

(well, if anyone's scraping this thread, goodness only knows what they're going to come up with)

Magpiecomplex · 20/04/2026 21:54

I'm afraid my osteophyte and I must away to bed. Night all.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 20/04/2026 21:54

Well, I was starting to feel a bit left out at not having a bunion to my name but, on reflection, I think I'll pass,

Is there a dodgy knees day?

I'm genuinely glad to hear that - that it's not as invasive, I mean.

for the first time, wonders what the Vic did with the spare bits of bone

I got it done with a spinal and didn't feel a thing during the op - in fact, I fell asleep.

I was advised to ask for the headphones and music. The choice was "Abba", "Classical Music" or "Country Music".

I selected Abba. I shit you not the first track was "Dancing Queen". When I started to laugh, the surgeon thought that something was wrong.

I was ok with shaved but got a little boaky at the pin removing description.

I didn't know and - apparently - I had them. I thought that my feet were normal.

The first clue that something was amiss was when a GP looked at my feet and said [with something akin to horror in his voice] "Have your feet always looked like that?"

I genuinely thought that everyone had a pointy bit like that. I suppose that I never really looked at anyone else's foot...and I'll have you know that I was a married woman at the time.

My next younger sister (I'm the second of five) had bunions and needed an operation. She was glad to have them dealt with as she was tired of having shoes that hurt her feet until they had distorted themselves to fit round the pointy bits. I think she'd have laughed to think of there being a National Bunion Day. For us April 21st was always our mother's birthday and also the late Queen's.

All is good. I loved your description of your dad - I have known many stoic, older men like that.

MarieDeGournay · 20/04/2026 22:23

I inherited weird feet as well, and also had that moment where it dawns on you that not everybody's feet look like yours - I was probably about 12 at the time, cue decades of self-consciousness🙄
But none of the 😱surgery, thankfully - I was offered surgery once, but it would only have been to be able to wear different kinds of shoes, I'm OK with boring shoes and orthotic insoles.

You'll never guess what I've just ordered online.... nail polish!
I feel like one of the gang now, in with you trendy girls who post pikkies of their latest nail polish.💅
My two colour are ........matte black, and chrome...... which are going to be used to refurb an old motorcycle model😁

I wondered how I was going to touch up the chrome and then 💡nail polish! just enough to do the job, and it looks like it will give a proper chrome finish.

Ooooh yes! Airfix when I was little, a bit of railways, more recently anything that takes my fancy.
I made a model of The Bluestocking last year - always glad of an excuse to post pikkies of it.

I scratchbuilt everything, except the dining chairs which I already had and happened to be the right scale! And obvs I didn't make the gerbils, I was delighted to find them on Amazon, and they too happened to be just the right scale.

I can't recall ever meeting a ferret, although I've been following in admiration their manoeuvrability in reverse, on other threads. I wondered about Edith's insistence on remaining downwind of them and after a little research, discovered that they are related to skunks, both being part of the Mustelidae family.

Every day is a school day in the Bluestocking.

Upwind, Damson, upwind.
Downwind is where the smell is blown.
