Best resources explaining JKRs position on trans identifying people?

I know she has published her own essay, but, I am looking for shorter more accessible resources or even videos which are supportive, fully explain things and are short and clear enough for a early teen to understand - appreciate it!

(Yes I know I could google etc but I am certain you can all give me some very good vetted recommendations)

This is one of my favourites:

It's less than 5 minutes long and IMO it's better than summarising her opinions because it demonstrates that in order to believe she is transphobic, you firstly need to read what she has said in her own words.

- YouTube

Enjoy the videos and music that you love, upload original content and share it all with friends, family and the world on YouTube.

I'd forgotten that clip. Really good.

But wonder if this is for a teen, whether they will then feel confident having it pointed out that because everyone is saying JKR is transphobic although no evidence of that, they will feel able to stand up against "everybody is saying it, it must be true"?

quixote9 · 06/04/2026 23:05

I wonder if in addition to getting her to look at the facts, what Rowling actually wrote, it would be useful to bring the "cool" factor into the open?

The biggest problem is that being pro-woman is just teeth-grittingly uncool. Pretty much everywhere at this point, but triply so among young teens I suspect.

I'm not a youth counselor so I don't know the best approach. I'd probably ask something hopelessly blunt like, "are you icked out by what your friends might think?" And then somehow tie that in to how lifting up any low status, disadvantaged group always feels like that. (That's how you can tell who's actually getting the short end.) The defenders in civil wars are heroes only in retrospect.

Anyway. I hope you get through!

A couple of excellent clips and tweets there, OP.

You could also let your daughter know that the Distance Magazine has offered £1 million to a man (who has it in for JKR) if he can quote anything that she has said that is actually transphobic.

As far as I know, the money remains unclaimed.

Is that true?!

Goodness me, how many contrived law suits could the GLP project manage to concoct ....

edited to add: cant find any mention of the magazine let alone offer of £1million. Can you provide a link? Thanks.

And no, there is no million dollars. Like most things around mumsnet, the source is "trust me bro" and if someone actually had million dollars, they would do like people here, and constantly shift what is transphobia, to the point that nothing is.

Nothing proves JK Rowling is wrong better than threatening with sexual assault, isn’t that right, @AidaP ?

Maybe a derail but reading the glaad accountability thing and noticing that still refuse to call out companies like Activision-Blizzard and Riot Games for hefty sums of cash to anti-lgbtq politicians, groups and countries while pretending to be lgbtq friendly. Disappointing but not shocking that they refuse to look deeper than the key jingling effect of "look a vaguely gay/trans character don't look at out donations".

So this can be said but stating that Neil Gaiman should be in jail and lose custody of his kid and his wealth is too far and gets me a week of death threats (ended up having to delete that post and my bluesky at the time). Cool.

Gaiman is a Genderist so he is automatically one of the Elect and, therefore, only merits a slap on the wrist for any transgression no matter how horrible.

JKR is however a woman who steadfastly refuses to believe that mammals can change their sex or that men should be allowed to do whatever they want under the guise of claiming womanhood. She deserves spite and malice for all time (and threats of rape and death).

This has been decided by the 'wokerati' and apparently brooks no appeal.

I'm just a bit annoyed seeing that considering how mild my critiques. I still don't get how the man who wrote Wanda Mann (a pretty egregious stereotype that checks the boxes of what they claim to hate) still gets love from their community or at least the whole " money from his work doesn't go to hurt people- despite that's literally what he did with money-or the whole his work doesn't have bigotry-debatable- and should be separated from the artist." Sorey I shouldn't derail so much.

i'd heard about it, but was under the impression that she herself was offering the money. But it appears it's this mag.

There's also this, which is a shame

As mentioned at the beginning, Wardlaw was reacting to a piece by Hadley Freeman about an interview that she did not get to do. Sting, the musician, apparently wanted a different interviewer, since Freeman’s views are unacceptably TERFy.

I don't think aida has actually read that link

“If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. … I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”

Rowling tweeted: “Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

The Glaad link is full of lies. But AidaP is happy to regurgitate those lies and somehow thinks that’s justification for threatening JKR with sexual assault.

What is even more brazen is that the majority of the sexual assault threats towards her are from unknowns on Twitter etc. But AidaP makes the threat proudly and openly under his own name, and keeps harassing her here as well. I wonder if it falls under the malicious communications law?

Oh yeah, there are lies and misrepresentations. But even so, most people would read the article with a pinch of salt and still think I'm not sure what she's supposed to have done. Because she sounds rational and kind even while they're trying to misrepresent her.

Datun · 07/04/2026 08:31

Eg They think she shouldn't have said how much she loves it when a plan comes together over the upholding of the equality act.
Says everything you need to know.

She shouldn't agree with upholding the equality act because they are advocating for it to be unworkable.

Claiming the equality act is transphobic is not a good look. But more than that, they think it is.

Oh no. EVERYTHING is transphobic -

https://wingsoverscotland.com/everything-is-transphobic/

And you've got quite the cheek, pal, opining on anything about JKR given your previous threats of sexual assault against her.

I'm surprised the Police haven't been chapping at your door to be honest.

Everything is transphobic

The modern world is an ideological minefield, readers, and is increasingly almost as dangerous as a real one. Having the wrong opinions about things can easily get you fired, ostracised from polite…

It's just a quote from the A-Team, isn't it? With the big cigar? I'd put it on a par with "we'd have got away with it if it hadn't been for you meddling kids".

Shedmistress · 07/04/2026 08:44

A phobia is an irrational fear.

Fearing men who say they are women who threaten you with 'fuck...with a splintery rolling pin' that is not irrational. It is totally rational.

Exactly. It was a tongue in cheek remark.

But even so, the sentiment behind is that she's glad that women's rights were upheld.

Posting an article that thinks that's awful, or transphobic is, yet again, foot shootingly counter-productive.

I’d take everything Aida says with a pinch of salt, OP. He calls himself a lesbian, FFS.

@BonfireLady I forgot about that video, didn’t the teacher get sacked after it?
