Moby: what a bellend

Had to laugh at Moby going out of his way to flag up his brave culture warrior credentials by dragging Lola by The Kinks all the way up from 1970 so he could claim it was gross and transphobic.
Especially as the song is actually affectionate, bittersweet, honest, has a great tune, not transphobic and absolutely craps on most of Moby's output from a great height.

Well that could have gone either way - I thought maybe he had quoted it as proof that transwomen have 'always been here'!

edited to add that 'Moby - what a bellend' could have have various explanations too😄

Well, I'm inclined to defend artists' idiosyncratic tastes, and his pronouncement did occur in what was presumably a interview-like debrief rather than polemic project. So, who knows how well considered it was. But the morally superior smugness 90s style world-music artists has always been one of their least attractive qualities.

Plus, Moby picks Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction (official video includes man dressing as a pregnant woman with AGP vibes) when everyone surely knows that Jane's Addiction's best song was Jane Says.....

Edited

I was on a thread about it earlier and people defending the song said exactly that. Some said it was ' obviously about a trans person of color ' . Whatever. I'm a major Kinks fan and bought most of their records. I always assumed it was about a guy who liked cross dressing. More luck to him!

At the time the only controversy was the inclusion of the words Coca Cola - which they had to make Cherry Cola to get played on Radio 1. Strange in retrospect. Don't know much about Moby but he sounds like a bit of a plank. This daft comment might have given him a bit of street cred in 2017.

ZookeeperSE · 22/03/2026 20:45

Goodness imagine being that much of a dunce. And then announcing it to the world, well, the Grauniad readership at least.

PermanentTemporary · 22/03/2026 20:46

Potentially interesting thought made dumb by Moby - of course it’s a bit odd sometimes listening to lyrics or writing that was progressive in its day and trying to match it up with current thinking, which may even lead to new ideas. Unless you’re very superficial in which case you just say ‘ooh too difficult’ and shut down the train of thought. Clearly Moby is as deep as a puddle.

Abhannmor · 22/03/2026 20:48

Ps With all due respect to Jayne County , I saw him a few times when he was Wayne County. He wasn't trans then and it was many years after Lola was released. He is doing a bit of retro projection here. But I still love him.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 22/03/2026 20:50

If anyone listens to the Heavyweight podcast, there’s one about him that proves he’s an absolute dick.

MassiveWordSalad · 22/03/2026 21:56

Moby is one creepy little dude. I remember reading an interview with him years ago where he mentioned a game he liked to play at parties called “knob touch” which involved him discreetly getting his dick out and touching someone with it without their knowledge 🤢 And then there was his ‘relationship’ with Natalie Portman (which she claims never happened, calling his behaviour ‘creepy’ and ‘inappropriate’) when she was eighteen and he was in his thirties 🤢🤢 It doesn’t surprise me at all that he would come out with this nonsense about Lola.

Maaate · 23/03/2026 07:31

Has Moby managed to get TERFs and TRAs to agree on something 😯

BackToLurk · 23/03/2026 07:35

Oh Moby love, don’t try and be an ally.

Moby: what a bellend
RedToothBrush · 23/03/2026 07:48

Aging artist who hasn't had a hit in years looking to stay relevant starts spouting culture war shit for attention.

My. How.... Original.... ?

Indeed that would have been poetry 😂

Abhannmor · 23/03/2026 08:03

Silly Moby. Rule 1. It's never going to be good enough for the TRAs. But yes , it was trans positive as the protagonist loves a transvestite.

Speaking of Lou Reed , the Kinks were one of the few bands the old misery liked. It's been many years since I listened to his particular favourite Lazy Old Sun. I seem to remember it as a typical piece of Ray Davies whimsy and a bit melancholy. No doubt when I hear it again I will be forced to accept it was about trans people of colour.

testmatchspecial · 23/03/2026 08:39

I don’t know whether Dave Davies does his Twitter himself but there’s something about a nearly 80 year old hitting straight back online, batting away some nonsense that’s made me smile.

Abhannmor · 23/03/2026 09:56

Dave Davies is so underrated as a guitar player too. I'm glad he got over that stroke he had a while ago.

I also saw the title and thought of Jonathan Goldstein

MarieDeGournay · 23/03/2026 10:22

Just to be clear - Moby can like or dislike anything at all, he could even dislike the Kinks😱it's his comments about the lyrics of Lola we're having a go at him about...
Apart from that, de gustibus non est disputandum, innit?😄

I can't see or hear the word 'Kinks' without the opening notes of Waterloo Sunset playing in my head.

I wonder if Moby thinks that Terry meeting Julie, Waterloo Station, every Friday night is unacceptably cisnormative? Why isn't Terry meeting Lola, the transphobic bigot?😁

KnittingQuestion · 23/03/2026 11:11

While I don't tend to go to Eminem for my opinions, he always had a point about Moby.

Motnight · 23/03/2026 11:16

Wasn't it Moby that wrote about much younger actress in his biography and received a huge backlash? He said that they were dating, she responded by saying that they had never dated but that she had been upset by his creepy behaviour towards her?

I wish he'd just said 'fuck off'.
