“Heated Rivalry” author Rachel Reid on J. K. Rowling - “the bar is pretty high in how evil you have to be,” “ I’m extremely the opposite of everything she believes”

Well, this is disappointing.

”[Reid] has a keen desire not to disappoint her fans, especially when they’re sending her photos of freshly inked tattoos of her words on their skin. ‘I know of another author that a lot of people got tattoos of but then wanted them gone. Like, J. K. Rowling,’ she says. ‘The bar is pretty high for how evil you have to be, but I don’t want to let a single person down.’ I ask if she’s a TERF. ‘No, I’m extremely the opposite of everything she believes,’ she replies.”

Well, too late, she let me down. “Extremely the opposite of everything she believes,” huh? I guess Rachel Reid thinks teenage girls should be forced to undress after PE in front of naked male classmates who gawp as their dicks get hard. Or that female inmates should be locked in cells with male inmates serving time for serial rape.

I don’t expect Reid to agree with Rowling on trans issues. It’s the monstering of Rowling that I take issue with - the “evil,” and the framing of Rowling as so extreme that Reid feels the need to be extremely the opposite of everything she believes.

Edit: title should read “on how evil you have to be”

I don't know? I haven't been thinking of your gametes nearly enough, it seems.

Unhinged

only women can get pregnant. Go on, say it-you (along with everyone else on the planet) know it’s true

Men are fertile too you know - fail

Apparently we are to believe that nobody has ever come up with language to distinguish between one kind of fertile person and another kind of fertile person.

Again, I think that this is a very male attitude.

midgetastic · 27/02/2026 16:26

Actually really starting to struggle here because if man and women are not defined than transgenders can’t exist at all ? But I thought it was rude and unhelpful to say they don’t exist ?

So you have absolutely no idea what man and woman means ? Therefore you can’t explain to me what I am ?

wouldn’t it be a good idea to get some basics in place first? You know if you can’t define something you can’t then define it’s change can you ?

I have no idea what your sex or gender is. Honestly, it hasn't yet broken in to my top 20 tasks to accomplish today.

I mean why would you want to have words to distinguish between the ejaculating people and the gestating for 9 months followed by breast feeding people?

it’s just a minor detail amirite?

midgetastic · 27/02/2026 16:28

I am asking you to explain how I would know?

you see some people say it’s to do with sexual biology

but you say it isn’t - so what is it please ? What set of rules or tests do I apply to myself to work out what I should say on a form?

Sex realists believe there are only men (sex) and women (sex).

My experience here would reinforce the expectation that all else must be ignored and/or invalidated by sex realists under those beliefs.

It's very difficult (and often, unlikely, but not completely impossible) to remediate racist and homophobic beliefs. Sex realist beliefs are just as entrenched. I just don't have time or the energy to be mumsnet deprogrammer.

What is the word we use to identify the class of people who gestate babies?

it’s quite an important concept. I’m sure there must be a word for it

pregnant.

Hmmm…I’m pretty sure I’m not pregnant, and nor is my daughter. We’re both of the class of humans that can get pregnant though!

I would then guess you are not currently gestating a child.

Or the difference between the 'Omigod I am bleeding, I must call an ambulance!' people and the 'oh blood, must remember nurofen' people.

Sex realist belief would require that a person who does not menstruate must therefore be a man.

Indeed

turns out bleeding from your genitals can mean very different things for different classes of people

but hey, why would you need words about that?

No - that’s what not being pregnant means. But PP were asking what class of humans we fit into. The class who COULD get pregnant although are NOT NECESSARILY pregnant right now.

Does that mean that only around 1 in 16 of the population are women and the rest are men ?

That's not what they wrote though.

I would answer your suggestion for humans, some women, some trans men and some non-binary people could get pregnant but not every woman, trans man or non-binary person.

I can only hope the women of Afghanistan will find a way to eventually forgive me.

midgetastic · 27/02/2026 16:49

So the words woman man and none binary are as meaningless as every thing else you type ?

Does anyone feel the quality of the jokers has deteriorated over recent years ?

Not many men would either -
