“Heated Rivalry” author Rachel Reid on J. K. Rowling - “the bar is pretty high in how evil you have to be,” “ I’m extremely the opposite of everything she believes”

Well, this is disappointing.

”[Reid] has a keen desire not to disappoint her fans, especially when they’re sending her photos of freshly inked tattoos of her words on their skin. ‘I know of another author that a lot of people got tattoos of but then wanted them gone. Like, J. K. Rowling,’ she says. ‘The bar is pretty high for how evil you have to be, but I don’t want to let a single person down.’ I ask if she’s a TERF. ‘No, I’m extremely the opposite of everything she believes,’ she replies.”

Well, too late, she let me down. “Extremely the opposite of everything she believes,” huh? I guess Rachel Reid thinks teenage girls should be forced to undress after PE in front of naked male classmates who gawp as their dicks get hard. Or that female inmates should be locked in cells with male inmates serving time for serial rape.

I don’t expect Reid to agree with Rowling on trans issues. It’s the monstering of Rowling that I take issue with - the “evil,” and the framing of Rowling as so extreme that Reid feels the need to be extremely the opposite of everything she believes.

Edit: title should read “on how evil you have to be”

So she doesn’t believe in loyalty, honesty, integrity or generosity? All values that JKR’s writings are centred on, and that she exemplifies in her own life.

Well, Reid, if that’s the person you want to be…

Well never heard of her but Googled her and she's a queer Canadian author so of course she's gonna say all that

thirdfiddle · 23/02/2026 17:30

Who?

SilenceInside · 23/02/2026 17:31

One of these days one of these interviewers might actually ask these people what exactly and specifically they are referring to when they discuss JKR and what she supposedly believes. Just once would be nice. That’s what I’d ask next - “oh, really, what is it that you are extremely the opposite of?”. But they never ever ask.

Yeah, I'm so tired of hearing about how evil she is, when she is basically the opposite of evil, she is one of the most generous and thoughtful rich people in existence. Yes, she's SO EVIL for wanting girls and women to have single sex spaces and kids to avoid being medical patients for life.

I've lost so much content I used to enjoy to this ideology, including many authors (I now avoid checking author's social media in fear I will see their pro trans BS). I just can't stand listening to people deny reality and throw women and girls under the bus, and even more than that... they think they are so virtuous and kind.

Like I really enjoy Brandon Sanderson's podcast and though Brandon himself always avoids calling people out directly, his podcast host Dan Wells has several times called out JKR, like I can't stand Dan anymore now. -_- It makes me so sad losing all this stuff I liked over the years... but books, fandoms, are just so absolutely full of this garbage and hating on JKR.

To think I used to look up and like some of these people for their views. Now I see they were just sheep following the tribe.

InconvenientlyMaterial · 23/02/2026 17:34

Gosh Rachel Reid. Did you really mean that?

Well JKR is a philanthropist, so Rachel Reid keeps her wealth to herself.

JKR pays more than her fair share of taxes, so Rachel Reid uses tax avoidance schemes.

JKR is a socialist whose stopped her Labour party membership, so Rachel Reid is a capitalist who has left the Conservatives for a different party, perhaps Reform?

JKR creates services and charities which support vulnerable women and children, so Rachel Reid volunteers behind the bar at the Bullingdon Club

Etc etc etc

These people are very tiresome

mazedasamarchhare · 23/02/2026 17:43

I agree with Reid on one point she is ‘extremely opposite’ to Rowling;
Rowling is articulate, intelligent, witty, generous, and an extraordinarily talented author.

Remember 'Anne' the middle aged man who used to walk through the girl's changing room at the swimming pool.

Rachel Reid wants that? How embarrassing for her 😳

The evil of funding a rape crisis centre! And saying no to men!

EvelynBeatrice · 23/02/2026 18:15

What an ignorant idiot. Whatever your views on trans issues, no one can deny the enormous good that JKR has done for charity and others. What has this woman done?!

terryleather · 23/02/2026 18:27

It's amazing how many folk have been tripping over each other in their rush to condemn JKR over the past few years...but then what's not to like when you can use her fame to bolster your profile and virtue signal at the same time.

It's a win-win for the unimaginative and the tedious.

I actually really like “Heated Rivalry.” I watched the TV series about a month and a half ago, and I’ve rewatched it twice since. I finished the first book this weekend, and it left me smiling. I think Reid, while not an exceptional talent like Rowling - not many people are! - is good at what she does, which is write m/m romance. I’m not going to do the thing a lot of Rowling’s former fans have done and pretend an author’s books were never actually good because we have a very serious disagreement about women’s rights.

The truly wild thing here is that Reid, whose books are all hockey-centric, should be acutely aware of the dangers of biological males in women’s sports. We just saw Jack Hughes of the US Olympic hockey team lose teeth while winning a gold medal. Sam Bennett of Team Canada hit him in the face with a hockey stick. Does Reid think that would be acceptable for Sam Bennett to become “Samantha Bennett” and play against women he outweighs by 75 lbs of solid muscle? Does that strike her as fair or safe?

A trans man who used to play professional women's hockey plays one of the male characters in Heated Rivalry.

Reid has probably read the Hockey Canada gender expression/gender identity policy and faq, which would support any sized trans woman to play women's hockey. https://cdn.hockeycanada.ca/hockey-canada/Hockey-Programs/Safety/Downloads/gender-expression-and-identity-policy-faq-e.pdf

Never heard of her. She sounds tiresome. JK is the Queen.

TheKeatingFive · 23/02/2026 18:56

No idea who she is, but very disappointing to come across yet another woman happy to thrown more vulnerable women under the bus to appease male demands.

I suppose the handmaids will always be with us 🙄

FranticFrankie · 23/02/2026 19:00

Self-centred virtue signalling woman who I've never heard of.

What the heck does she mean by calling JKR evil? Can these twits hear themselves?
Have these people read what JKR said anyway?
If she is the opposite of everything JKR related then she doesn't believe in philanthropy, biological sex, single sex spaces for women, standing for women's rights!! Handmaid strikes again

Well - if 'evil' is standing up for women and girls then many of us fit that description.

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 23/02/2026 19:16

Saying that women and girls should have consent, and not be forced to be sexual and emotional props for boys and men is 'evil' is it?

Yeah love. Sure it is.

JHC, how dim do you have to be?

Chersfrozenface · 23/02/2026 19:18

OP, how about writing to her saying how much you enjoy her work and asking when she'll be writing a novel about a relationship between a man and a transman?

GreenEyesIsBack · 23/02/2026 19:28

A man and a transman on the same hockey team would be even more interesting 🤔

It has been asked many times what exactly JKR said or did that was evil & transphobic.

Occasionally someone checks & realises actually: nothing.

Other answers range from “set up a rape crisis centre just so she could exclude TW” and (my personal favourite) “nothing, but she went on writing & tweeting after trans people told her to stop”.
