Olivia Colman: “I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man.” 🙄

Olivia Colman is currently on the press tour for her new film Jimpa and has come out with some absolute corkers in an interview with them "magazine" including:

"Throughout my whole life, I’ve had arguments with people where I've always felt sort of nonbinary. Don’t make that a big sort of title! But I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female. I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man. And he goes, “Yeah, I get that.”"

Which I can only assume means he likes it when she pegs him.

And a dig at some undefined group of naysayers and haters and meanies:

"Most of the actors were from, particularly in the Dutch side of things, from the queer community there; I’ve never been part of a more welcoming group of people. For all those naysayers or haters or meanies, if [only] they could spend the time with the most welcoming, kind bunch of people. I kind of want everyone to just come and say hi and actually feel total love."

Jimpa stars Olivia Colman as Hannah, mother to the non-binary Frances (played by they/them, non-binary, queer, transgender daughter of the film's director, Aud Mason-Hyde) who go to Amsterdam to visit Hannah's gay HIV positive father (John Lithgow, currently simultaneously scorned by the queers for daring to be in the new Harry Potter series, any by the meanies for talking shit about JKR). I'm sure it will be a hoot.

Congratulations Olivia on your brave coming out as a queer, non-binary, gay man, spicy-straight woman. You're so late to the party all the cool kids will find your identity embarrassing now.

I really don’t care about her sexuality or gender, and feel like this is a misguided attempt by a luvvie who is pandering to the readers of “them” magazine, and drumming up publicity for a new film.

KimberleyMilkado · 07/02/2026 08:16

How naive of her to think that every one would be treated the same as her!

And what does she mean about getting into arguments with people where she felt non binary?

I suppose there will always be people who want to be special, or are keen to shed a tarnished or unfashionable identity. If they don't have an obvious trump card to play, they will reach rather desperately for anything at all.

For example:

Middle class people trying to make out they are actually working class. (And vice versa in circles where the snobbery is direct rather than inverted.)

White guilt people scratching around in their family trees for an ancestor that might possibly have been Native American or Black. Or just outright lying about their antecedents, especially if it might get them a job they wouldn't otherwise have got.

The sort of English person who is desperate not to be English and considers themself "Celtic" on the basis of vague or imagined family connections to Scotland, Ireland or Wales, or "feeling a spiritual connection".

People who are sucker for anything at all, positive or negative, that will put them in a rare or superior category. Or if they are irredeemably ordinary, they must have a special sort of child. YouTube is full of stuff that panders to that kind of thing. Rare blood group, eye colour, "cool" (or dark-and-therefore-sexy) psychological trait... you name it.

It's a human constant, but the desired or disdained categories change with the times and vary in different social settings. Currently "cisheteronormative" is a dirty word in certain circles, so...

These are very good comparisons

borntobequiet · 07/02/2026 08:20

To me she does what all British “national treasure” thespians do, which is play a thinly disguised version of herself in every role, so while I agree she’s an idiot, I don’t agree that she’s a good actress.

AMouseWithValour · 07/02/2026 08:21

I wonder when this film was developed/written and filmed? I presume it takes a good couple of years for a film to go from development to the cinema. Anyone any idea?

if so, it was probably green lit at a time when there was less push back against anyone questioning non-binary nonsense.

From what I’ve seen in real life and heard in the media, a lot of teens are turning away from hating anything vaguely GC on princlple.

I think there is still a massive problem but I wonder if the film would do better if it had been realised in 2023. Still, if it’s
a great film, it will do OK.

I won’t see it as it sounds bloody awful, Are the reviews in? I bet Mark Kermode loves it. 😀

thirdfiddle · 07/02/2026 08:28

Unless ... she's playing her own quiet game of "doesn't it sound silly when the grown ups do it too". I'd like to think that. Haven't heard enough of her interviews to know whether she has the sense of humour.

FiftyShadesOfPurple · 07/02/2026 08:29

People spend so much time navel gazing these days - perhaps they always did but nowadays there are too many platforms for them to disgorge their streams of rambling and brain-farts.

Cyclebabble · 07/02/2026 08:30

She was clearly making some light comments in an interview. The problem is that gender and sexuality is now a massively charged topic, hence the widespread commentary. I would recommend more listening to Ricky Gervais.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/02/2026 08:30

If the non binary character is described as being played by a “queer, non binary, transgender daughter” of the director, it means the actor is a TIM calling themselves “non binary”, I think.

Fancycrab · 07/02/2026 08:34

Funnywonder · 06/02/2026 23:56

Oh dear. Sometimes I’d just rather not know what goes on inside the real life brains of actors I love (see also Kathy Burke.)

What did Kathy Burke say?

Olivia: what you actually mean is you have never thought you were attractive as a woman.

BE HONEST FFS

BeepBoopBop · 07/02/2026 08:36

She bought my former home in Norfolk a couple of years ago. Grade II listed, oil fired heating, four oven oil-Aga, gas hob, two log burners & an open fire and single-glazed sash windows in the oldest part. Didn't make her think twice about her public stance on fossil fuels destroying the planet.
When I saw Oblivian I wondered why she didn’t buy herself a nice eco-friendly bungalow in Sheringham. But those are just for us ‘norms’. She is very special.

MagpiePi · 07/02/2026 08:38

If the non binary character is described as being played by a “queer, non binary, transgender daughter” of the director, it means the actor is a TIM calling themselves “non binary”, I think.

These multi-identity descriptions always make me think of those ‘if Gerald is the father of Diane’s sister’s aunt, how is Gerald related to Diane’ type questions, where you ultimately think, I really don’t give a shiny shite, but particularly when they are contradictory; how can you describe yourself as non binary and a daughter? Shouldn’t you be a non-gendered ‘child’?

The film sounds utterly tedious

TheHillIsMine · 07/02/2026 08:39

This stuff is so immature. Is she wanting attention? Words are failing me right now. Just embarrassing.

EscapeTheCastle · 07/02/2026 08:43

Remember folks, actors are only interesting when they are acting. Speaking the screenwriters words and doing what the director tells them to do.

InconvenientlyMaterial · 07/02/2026 08:43

It will be interesting to see how much she is allowed this ID too.

Short hair is common on older women and Olivia hasn't got a naturally androgynous face or body.

Applepe · 07/02/2026 08:46

Never liked her. Too fond of herself by half and now she’s just proved herself to be the massive bellend I always thought she was.

AncientBallerina · 07/02/2026 08:46

Is she going to to be exactly the same in this as she is in everything?

RoyalCorgi · 07/02/2026 08:48

She's so non-binary and unconventional that she's married to a man and they have three children together. I wonder how non-binary she felt when she was pregnant or giving birth. I wonder...

Oh, what the fuck, I can't be bothered. It's all so pointlessly, tediously stupid.

Whothought · 07/02/2026 08:49

Fizbosshoes · 06/02/2026 23:36

Is this a long winded way to explain she prefers her hair short?

😂😂😂😂 Well said!

Gettingbysomehow · 07/02/2026 08:53

Oh yuck TMI Olivia. Keep that private. We don't need to know this.

ZookeeperSE · 07/02/2026 08:54

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/02/2026 23:39

I suppose for the money they get, spouting any old shit that the director wants them to say is worth it.

This was my take away. I think they all have to, to some extent. And I haven’t yet decided if I feel slightly sorry for them or if I think they’re all tiny brained dickheads.

However, this:
But I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female
I agree with. I’ve never found myself flouncing around thinking oh goodness I’m such a womanly woman, being all womanly doing my womanly things. I mean, who does? Ohhh…..

HUNGRY4MORE · 07/02/2026 08:58

ProfessorLeveretGrey · 07/02/2026 07:20

Yeah an aunt of mine (aged 75 and in the 70s was marching for women's rights) recently claimed she now identified as queer and non-binary and would prefer if we used 'they/them for her.

My father said 'For Christ's sake Maureen, you've given birth to two children. If you are confused look inside your pants'.

Honestly if i had known family dinners were going to be so funny i would go more often.

🤣

We really need the laugh emoji back.

drspouse · 07/02/2026 08:59

@Heggettypeg we are adoptive parents and see the "rainbow baby collectors", people who seek out children who are darker skinned than them.
Our DD spent some weeks with a foster carer though she was placed there from the hospital; the foster carer told us about a white family that a baby in similar circumstances was going to. Prior to meeting the baby the family asked about her skin tone "we like dark babies" or "she'll match then" or some such. It seemed to be a reassurance that the child would fit the image.

SettingSunStillness · 07/02/2026 08:59

Maybe she wants to use her platform to be an ally.

Maybe she has a different view on this from you.

I think that's allowed. Even though she's a middle aged woman.
