Olivia Colman: “I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man.” 🙄

NaysayerOrMeanie · 06/02/2026 23:29

Olivia Colman is currently on the press tour for her new film Jimpa and has come out with some absolute corkers in an interview with them "magazine" including:

"Throughout my whole life, I’ve had arguments with people where I've always felt sort of nonbinary. Don’t make that a big sort of title! But I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female. I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man. And he goes, “Yeah, I get that.”"

Which I can only assume means he likes it when she pegs him.

And a dig at some undefined group of naysayers and haters and meanies:

"Most of the actors were from, particularly in the Dutch side of things, from the queer community there; I’ve never been part of a more welcoming group of people. For all those naysayers or haters or meanies, if [only] they could spend the time with the most welcoming, kind bunch of people. I kind of want everyone to just come and say hi and actually feel total love."

Jimpa stars Olivia Colman as Hannah, mother to the non-binary Frances (played by they/them, non-binary, queer, transgender daughter of the film's director, Aud Mason-Hyde) who go to Amsterdam to visit Hannah's gay HIV positive father (John Lithgow, currently simultaneously scorned by the queers for daring to be in the new Harry Potter series, any by the meanies for talking shit about JKR). I'm sure it will be a hoot.

Congratulations Olivia on your brave coming out as a queer, non-binary, gay man, spicy-straight woman. You're so late to the party all the cool kids will find your identity embarrassing now.

No, it is just describing an inner experieece and feeling. We all contain 'masculine' and 'feminine' coded characteristics and what she is describing is her way of trying to identify and name those feelings.

Edited

She doesn't get to use other people's lives, identities and reality as a metaphor for her feelings. It's arrogant, presumptuous and reduces people to stereotypes.

Imagine if it was race rather than sex and sexuality.

We all know our culture maps certain asumptions and stereotypes onto skin colour. And we all know there is a complex interplay of culture, identity family and racist experience or lack of that means Black people and White people at the population level do have some differences in social attitudes, experiences and outcomes. Nevertheless you would quite rightly be shocked if someone white started talking about having "Black coded" and "white coded" feelings, because you clearly see that's turning a complex and problematic reality into simplistic and reductive stereotypes.

You quite rightly wouldn't accept it for race, and you shouldn't accept it for sex or sexuality either.

RedToothBrush · 07/02/2026 10:34

"I don't conform to gender stereotypes. I find them very restrictive and confining. They are offensive and limiting to both men and women. I am outgoing, flamboyant, confident and like the company of men rather than women. I wish more women were like me as sometimes I don't feel like I fit in and I feel a bit like a minority. I can be rather borish and crass at times. I don't think of myself as a delicate flower in need of protection."

There are plenty of ways to articulate sentiments without resorting to rather dumb stereotypes. It's a communication issue not an identity issue.

minipie · 07/02/2026 10:36

This is very pick me isn’t it. “I’m not like other women, I don’t act and think all girly like they do, I’m actually just as good as a man”.

Does it not occur to her that there are millions of women who also don’t feel feminine?Because, you know, stereotypes aren’t actually accurate?

She sounds embarrassed to be a straight woman. How depressing.

I think it’s exactly this. Similar to what @ZenNudist said “I know 2 people who claim they are queer whilst being straight. Both are women married to men. I don't see why they feel the need to fly the rainbow flag to feel special whilst being the same as the rest of us.“
Sooo tired of straight women calling themselves ‘queer’ to try and sound edgy and interesting. As a lesbian I find it, at best laughable, at worst offensive. Slightly more excusable if you’re 18 & have grown up in this world…but fully grown married women who’ve had the privilege of going through their teen years - back when it wasn’t cool to be gay/queer - fully accepted by society & their families. No homophobic bullying at school, no disgusted looks from strangers, no being disowned by their parents, no contemplating suicide because they’re told society will never accept them. They have no idea what it was really like grow up gay/queer in the 90s & early 2000s. Fuck off and take up skateboarding if you’re so desperate to look cool and interesting during your midlife crisis.

Wow what a sick burn, you've really embarrassed yourself him there. 🙄Some of us female and male do enjoy that activity. If you don't enjoy it don't do it. It's not mandatory.

Oh you're so cool 🙄

You've missed the point. Totally.

No one cares what she does in bed. The point is she's claiming to know what is like to be a gay man - which is bollocks since she's neither gay, nor a man. The comment about pegging was that's as close as she'll ever come to being a gay man - and it's not very.

You know that alternate meaning of TERF - tired of explaining reality to fuckwits....?

Nooooooooo I love her as an actress, didn't know she talks so much bollocks.

Coincidentally watched her in an episode of Jimmy McGoverns Accused series with Anne Marie Duff last night, over 10 years old but absolutely superb from both of them.

Off topic I know but I just had to join you on The Accused, I recently binged on every episode I could find, including the OC one.

LochKatrine · 07/02/2026 10:48

@Fancycrab excellent points. These statements are made from the security and cushioning of wealth and fame and having your voice heard and constantly validated.
It's self absorbed nonsense.

Yeah. I said ‘huh?’ because I thought I misheard.

Haha exactly.

Narcissist.

Lottapianos · 07/02/2026 10:49

Christ Alive Olivia, what absolute fucking drivel! 🤦🏻‍♂️

I'm a big fan of hers - I think she's a really brilliant actress and absolutely stunning. But dear god, I'm cringing for her reading all that crap

Dgll · 07/02/2026 10:50

She sounds like she looks down on femininity and women. I used to feel like that but don't feel it at all now. It was 100% to do with my upbringing. I don't blame my mum as it was also 100% to do with her upbringing.

Jim Carrey Omg GIF

Exactly. And men who claim to know what it's like to be a woman, don't Because they aren't women.

Although TRAs go like this above when it's pointed out to them.

RedToothBrush · 07/02/2026 10:52

HighStreetOtter · 07/02/2026 10:48

What does enby mean? I thought it was a typo! 🤣

Enby means "I'm a self obsessed knob end who is trying and failing to be trendy. I don't otherwise fit in and I have limited social skills and think I should get my own way. I am over privileged and probably have parents who have an inability to say no or work in the media".

It does not mean non-binary because everyone is either male or female and non-binary has zero legal status.

Wtafmakeitstop · 07/02/2026 10:54

What a cartload of old shite. Disappointing, I always thought she was clever.

Fancycrab · 07/02/2026 10:54

Although for Olivia Coleman, I think it was mostly an attempt to appeal to her fans & what she thinks is the majority opinion in society at the moment. As an older woman she’s probably very aware that she needs to seem relevant and relatable, especially to the kind of audience of the film she’s just starred in. I don’t think she necessarily needs to claim this nonsense that she came out with to seem interesting in the way some ordinary women do, she’s an extremely successful and highly-regarded actor. I think she’s succeed in being “special”. I think it was more an attempt to connect with the film’s audience. I imagine it was some kind of verbal diahorrea and she’s kicking herself and cringing hard now

Indeed. If she needs help to 'name her feelings' might I suggest a dictionary and thesaurus.

Not just making up appropriated nonsense.

She's not five.

Im so sick of hearing 'women are shit, I'm not like women me Im basically a man'. Its so sad that women feel they can't just be themselves, they have to label it as NB.

I really don’t think she has the self awareness to cringe about this or any other idiotic thing she has said, of which this is not the first.

👏

I too used to think 'you're not like other girls' was a compliment. Now I will exist in my ravaged female body, mind and life as the woman I am, with no apologies. I was always like other girls.

Maryberrysbouffant · 07/02/2026 10:58

She is such a man pandering fuckwit. Such a shame as I always enjoyed her on tv.

Is this person intending to pay tax on all those extra adjectives?

There’s none left for the rest of us. I guess I’ll just have to go by plain old ‘woman’.

You’ll pay extra for not being the kind who has a penis though 😂
