Come in. Yes, you’re in the right place. No, you don’t need to explain yourself.

Coats will be drycleaned before you depart. Bags won't be stolen because Gubbins will play her triangle. And you really don't want to hear it.

The gerbils run the bar.
They are small, brisk, and unionised.
One is polishing a glass with unnecessary seriousness.
Another is keeping the tab and will remember what you ordered last time.
There is a triangle involved. No one knows why. It keeps Gubbins happy.

Sit. Think. Drink. Join in.

The gerbils have it from here.

Their ancestral homeland is in and around China, so there will be cultural fusion today.

Maybe even cultural confusion.

I’d very happily have some Chinese pancakes, with hoisin duck etc.

EdithStourton · 17/02/2026 17:09

Oh, yes, if I'd not been so shattered this morning - Gong Xi Fa Cai.

But here, batter made and savoury filling made, and I'm looking forward to stuffing myself having an enjoyable evening meal.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2026 17:13

You’ve reminded me to send new years greetings to my ex colleague, a good excuse to get in touch. Hard to keep contact when they’re nearly all in California.

a poster on another thread is planning just that

Magpiecomplex · 17/02/2026 18:21

The Magpie household has consumed roughly equal quantities of pancakes and golden syrup, and we're all now sitting around feeling well fed and slightly sticky.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/02/2026 20:04

DH is unwell, so I've eaten a cheese pancake on my own.

Very sorry to hear that, Fuzzy, I hope Mr Fuzzy feels better soon.Flowers

I am now full of pancakes. Some with brown sugar and lemon juice, some with maple syrup. We spread them with what we want and then roll them into a sausage before eating. What do the rest of you do?

ETA. Is it wrong to drink Drambuie with them? The sweet stickiness just seems right.

DeanElderberry · 17/02/2026 20:49

My mushroom, smoked salmon, cream cheese and dill ones were excellent.

As were the lemon and sugar ones at lunchtime.

Edited

Roll them up then attack them with a knife and fork. Although not if it's a savoury pancake with the toppings cooked in.

DeanElderberry · 17/02/2026 21:10

Rolled up and eaten with a fork.

EdithStourton · 17/02/2026 22:07

Savoury: dollop of filling in centre, wrap into tidy parcel, eat with knife and fork
Sweet: spread of scatter filling, or pour a river of golden syrup from one side to the other, roll and eat with a fork.

The recipe I use claims that a one-egg batch makes 8 pancakes. This is a lie.

JanesLittleGirl · 17/02/2026 22:31

Delighted to learn that the rolled pancake is normal. Nobody is suggesting that they should be folded in four or, shudders, eaten in a stack.

midgetastic · 17/02/2026 22:37

My pancakes are never capable of being rolled or folded or anything - they tend to fall apart

taste ok though

JanesLittleGirl · 17/02/2026 23:12

Hey @Boiledbeetle how's your gob? If it still hurts I could spring you some of my super cocodamol. 30mg of codeine per tablet. I'm not saying that they're strong but I am not allowed to write any business within 4 hours of taking them.

You're making me all nostalgic for Paris now - the crepe makers on the streets, the theatre of pouring the batter and spreading it around with a little utensil shaped like a T, sprinkling on your chosen flavours, folding it into four [sorry Jane!], putting it in a little bag and handing it over to you...
I miss Paris. Or more exactly I miss that me, in that Paris.Hmm

Wishing you all une bonne nuit, bon repos, faites de beaux reves [can't manage the circumflex, désoléé!], et bonne recupération Bouillie et GateauSmile

In other news, please be sure to keep your ibuprofen gel on a separate medicine cabinet shelf from your Corsodyl gel.

Britinme · 18/02/2026 03:12

We ate pancakes with leek, ham and cheese followed by pancakes with lemon juice and sugar, all rolled and eaten with a knife and fork. They were delicious.

ChristmasStars · 18/02/2026 07:30

Maybe we should all have another pancake day in a few weeks.

We had combinations of marmite, cheese and ham, with crudités and hummus on the side, followed by combinations of Nutella, PB and banana.

Then we all lay on the sofas comatose.

EdithStourton · 18/02/2026 09:47

I had to go out last night after stuffing down pancakes. Fortunately I had to do just enough exercise to keep me alert, but not so much that I got indigestion.

And then I slept. 11-7, pretty much. Full marks to the sleep gerbils: they have redeemed themselves after yesterday's telling-off.

I managed a lovely walk with B&B between the deluges the other day. I have access to some fields, rough grass and woodland - no footpaths, no other dogs or walkers, absolute bliss. We saw two hares, neither of which B&B chased as they belted off (result!), they flushed a couple of pheasants, and put up some partridges. The ground was wet and squelchy from Deluge #1 (and the track in the wood was very muddy), and Deluge #2 was about to break as we got back to the car, but we didn't actually get rained on.

And going home I exchanged a jolly wave with the farmer's son as he drove by.

Oh, and the wild garlic was coming up very nicely. I have permission to pick it, so I'm poised and ready.

'Comatose'😂😂😂
It's funny you don't often see that in restaurant reviews, do you?

We were both rendered happily comatose..'😁

I love reading about your walks with B&BSmile
I'm glad the hare got away, but in any case my interpretation of what the dogs do is that they have play-dates with pheasants etc, they chase each other round and round the field, getting all muddy and over-tired, at which point Mummy [that would be you, in this scenario] steps in and says 'Now now, play nicely!' and then they all sit down and have sandwiches and doughnuts and lashings of ginger beer, and then they say 'Bye bye Batshit! Bye bye Brains!' 'Bye bye pheasants! see you next time!'
and they all go home, tired and muddy but happy.

That's what happens, isn't it?Grin

It's bucketing rain here again. Deluge after deluge after deluge.
