The Bluestocking Women’s Pub: definitely full of ludicrous halfwits who refuse to get a grip (with unionised gerbils)

Welcome to The Bluestocking: convivial by design, opinionated in the best way, generously stocked with excellent food and drink that complies with whatever it’s meant to comply with, and any calories, gluten or alcohol are entirely virtual.

Staffed by impeccably trained, unfailingly polite gerbils who run a tight bar with plenty of enthusiasm and good intentions. Quick with the drinks, but terrible spillers spellers and liable to turn an idle thought on existential existence into a full blown musical with Busby Berkeley routines. You have been warned.

All women welcome, just in case that isn't obvious. Men can go to The Staunch Ally round the corner.

I remember the poster, featuring a rather rotund fisherman skipping along a cliff. I think the poster was actually advertising railway journeys.

It was - railway journeys to visit Skegness. Our daughter-in-law has a copy of that poster in her downstairs loo, so I've seen it quite often over the years. 😉

I think cotton processing also needed a moist climate in general, hence mostly on the west side of the Pennines, further east more wool?

NotAtMyAge · 27/01/2026 21:45

So I understand, though there was also a successful, if smaller, woollen industry in very moist mid-Wales from the C18 to the early C20th.

Britinme · 27/01/2026 21:49

Another Whitby fan here! I used to have an ammonite many years ago that I picked up from the beach there, but I have no idea what happened to it. It sat there (or in a cliff) for millions of years and then I go and lose it!

DH was out snowblowing again today. The extent of snow can be gauged by the photos...

Good Heavens! That has brought back a memory over 50 years old, of visiting a cotton mill on a geography field trip, to learn about the processing of cotton cloth. I have a very clear memory of the damp, humid atmosphere and the smell of the raw cotton.

Ugg.

I'm knackered

<grabs Glenda> could you possibly bring me a cup of tea, strong one sugar and milk, some white bread toast, butter and raspberry jam. Do not put the butter and jam on the toast. I want to do it myself.

Also can you order me a capybara massage My neck and shoulders could do with a good pummelling.

That rings a bell - I think cotton needs an amount of moisture to withstand mechanised processing, hence the mills in Lancs etc.
Wool is naturally tougher.
I think so anyway!

On reflection, maybe it's the other way round - wool can't be processed on mechanised machinery, hence the switch from wool to imported cotton which is stronger and can stand up to the machining..
but it had to have some moisture to ...
oh I give up, I clearly haven't got much of a clue about the Ind Rev😄

Taztoy · 27/01/2026 22:24

Damn this having to work. It is most inconvenient.

MarieDeGournay · 27/01/2026 22:27

Early night for me - I'm clearly exhausted by trying to remember about cotton vs wool in the Ind Rev😄

G'night all, esp Boily who seems to have had a tough day, so the Sleep Gerbil will be accompanied Chez Beetle by the Massage Capybara tonightSmile

The usual, please, Sleep Gerbils and Dream Gerbils, for everybody else.🌛

Have you had a hard day @Boiledbeetle ?

I've been doing a rather boring repetitive task all day, it appears I did it with my head bent at a funny angle judging from the aching.

I'm in need of a sleep gerbil tonight.

Back to accents for a moment, our O-level English teacher regretted suggesting we tried a Welsh accent when reading aloud Under Milkwood 🤦‍♀️

🤣

EmpressaurusKitty · 28/01/2026 00:48

I’ve had an increasingly annoying cold since Saturday, had to cancel my weekend plans & am currently awake coughing.

Are there doctor / nurse gerbils?

inkymoose · 28/01/2026 01:02

Dear @EmpressaurusKitty, sorry you are awake and coughing, how annoying!

There's Bessie the Badger Doctor, also for any psychiatric help there is @Boiledbeetle, and for pure comfort there is Rosy the red panda, who gives amazing hugs. Recycled images.

Wonderful.

I’m going to get up in a moment for ice cream & Lemsip, I’m sure Dr Bessie would recommend ice cream. Thank you @inkymoose.
