How young women are leading the fight-back
https://www.thenational.scot/politics/25786429.young-women-leading-fight-back/

Can also be read at https://archive.is/nwtdv

I read this as interested to see what young women in Scotland had to about for instance FWS. But no mention of women's sex based rights.

Maybe the discussion is just going on on platforms they dont bother with.

And suspect this it probably true of young women in other parts of the UK.

Seems as though it could be another bunch of be-kinders like the WEP

In a similar vein, they discussed at length the ongoing problem with online abuse in Scottish politics, directed at women in the political sphere. I think this is a problem in most places, but I am of the opinion that Scotland has a particularly sinister problem with it. It escalated massively when the Gender Recognition Bill was brought to parliament, where influential figures like JK Rowling harnessed the opportunity to spread anti-trans rhetoric that quickly unmasked itself as blatant misogyny.

IwantToRetire · 22/01/2026 18:38

I cant help but think maybe some (funded by politicians?!) organised this and thought best to leave this question out.

Its not that I expect all young women in Scotland would be GC, but would have thought that it is an issue that is current, even on a tabloid level of men in women's prisons.

Let alone the headlines when FWS won their Court case.

Very strange.

A lack of education around healthy relationships and political systems my dc did plenty around these topics in their Scottish schools.

How did the writer end up deciding JKR is a blatant misogynist, then? Hard to take anything else she says seriously

FlirtsWithRhinos · 22/01/2026 18:59

If they think JKR is a misogynist, they ain't no Feminists. Bruv.

Unless in la la land, funding a women's refuge is "misogynist" because it's perpetuating the unhelpful truth that women are more at risk of serious physical damage from men than vice versa 🙄

lcakethereforeIam · 22/01/2026 19:00

That's true it seems the fifth columnist is putting her own spin on it. Perhaps sex based rights were left out because they couldn't reach agreement.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 22/01/2026 19:05

Suspect it's the usual "saying women can't have penises is policing femininity and that's misogynist"

Haven't yet figured out that the only "women" who gain anything from women-can-have-penises are male ones, while every single female one (you know, the people whose oppression Feminist exists in defiance of in the first place) loses out by having to reduce their self definition into a set of attributes that can also be achieved by men.

IwantToRetire · 22/01/2026 19:22

As it is just in terms of current issues in the headlines for nothing to be said, I thought I would check out their web site.

And although cant find a section about "inclusivity" they do have this statement:

"Self-identifying young women, girls and non-binary people who recognise themselves within this movement are at the heart of everything we do."

https://youngwomenscot.org/about/our-mission-and-values/

And more in this "strategic" plan https://youngwomenscot.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/YWMStrategicPlan-ReimaginingScotlandforYoungWomenandGirls2023-2027.pdf

I wonder if they are funded by the SNP.

Our mission and values

We live and breathe our values. They are integral to everything we do.We have a bold mission, underpinned by our five-year organisational strategy and our strong principles.

”Misogyny” ffs.

That word doesn’t mean what you think it means you fools!

Imnobody4 · 22/01/2026 20:02

Oh dear, brainwashed.

The manifesto was co-designed with young women and girls across Scotland using an intersectional feminist approach, with the six demands being drawn from their personal experiences.

What can only be described as utter hysteria was left unchecked to the point that all of the internet misogynists of the day found a cause to latch themselves to, including a flurry of anti-women men badly disguising their misogynistic views under a veil of anti-trans bile..

"Things feel like they have taken a shift backwards, and we feel almost a million miles away from the days of Nicola Sturgeon's premiership, where, even if not a problem entirely solved, women and girls felt at least a little more like they had representation to grasp on to."

They're, at best, very stupid, I'm betting it's another group sponsored by the SNP, another nail in the coffin of Scotland's future. 🤮

lifeinthelastlane · 22/01/2026 20:12

I don't think the writer of the article is actually part of the group though? She seems to be giving a personal opinion when she launches into the JKR stuff.
I read their history page and they are a continuation/development/rebranding of the YWCA

Tadpolesinponds · 22/01/2026 20:19

According to AI, they're partly funded by the Scottish government.

Wow, that's more than brainwashed (taking a side), that is just factually wrong.

And my brain cannot parse that last paragraph.

Kelly Given seems to have had some involvement with them for some time see https://youngwomenscot.org/30-under-30/kelly-given/
but agree with PP that remarks in article are probably hers, although obvioulsy group is trans inclusive. I wonder if in fact the group didn't make hardline enough TRA comments so she added her own. ie usual blur between being a reporter and a commentator.

According to AI:

The Young Women's Movement Scotland (YWMS) receives funding from various trusts, foundations, and government initiatives for specific projects, including the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Workplace Equality Fund, and the Princes Trust, funding programs like 'Young Women Demand', historical research, and digital inclusion efforts, as they operate as a coalition of women's organizations.

Waitwhat23 · 22/01/2026 21:15

They have received funding from the Scottish Government through the Inspiring Scotland grants - from the Delivering Equally Safe Fund and an Inspiring Scotland/Changing Ideas joint initiative. Up until at least January 2023, funding from Equally Safe (a fund specifically to address eradicating violence against women and girls) was contingent on applicants ensuring 'that your service is inclusive to lesbian, bisexuality, trans and intersex (LBTI) women'.

https://forwomen.scot/29/12/2019/funding-conditions/

I would say that this had changed after the Supreme Court judgement, but with the Scottish Government dragging their heels, there is no guarantee.

And one of the co-Chairs of the Equally Safe Joint Strategic Board? Kaukab 'decapitate Terfs poster' Stewart.

The Young Women's Movement have also received funding from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Lottery Funding.

Kelly Given wrote in the Summer, something along the lines of Sandie Peggie winning would roll back the rights of minority groups and women. TW have been using these facilities for years sort of thing. Wonder how she coped with the Darlington nurses ET?

Their website talks of 'self-identifying women and girls'. So not for women and girls at all, which is why there is no mention of single sex spaces etc. Everything is 'gender'.

Who is Kelly given? Is she a Nicola sturgeon TRA activist? Ugh I hate it when other women throw our rights away to keep the male fetishists happy.

I don't disagree, but a line like that would be essential for any group receiving Scot gov funding sadly

AreYouSureAskedNaomi · 24/01/2026 18:52

These people are no friend to women

IwantToRetire · 24/01/2026 20:28

I think what this article illustrates apart from the personal opinions of the writer is that "news" reporting has now and for sometime ceasted to be news.

"News" has now been coopted to be yet another platform where people who share a viewpoint promote and in effect exaggerate the importance of events or groups whose politics they like.

And whilst occasionally some papers will print a GC / women's sex based rights article, it is usually not about promoting the stand point, but to attack an opposing group to try and rubbish them.

Which on one level doesn't work because despite the best efforts of those posting to FWR, the majority of "news" reports and opinions published are all pro TRAs.
