You couldn't make it now - why has the Beeb got it on IPlayer?

Sorry for digression - Daphne on bull fiddle, Josephine on sax, invading female spaces... it must irritate the TRAs to have people laughing at cross dressing. They pass better than most trans I've seen photos of, even with short hair, though they did have a serious make-up department.

Sadly, I think you're right that it couldn't be made now, but give it a few years ... not that I think anyone should even attempt to re-make it in fact perish the thought! There's a good reason it regularly tops the Best Comedy Film of All Time polls. I watched it on BBC2 a few days after Christmas for the umpteenth time and laughed like a drain. Jack Lemmon is magnificent. Tony Curtis is excellent too, but Jack gives the performance of his life. Thank you, Billy Wilder.

The best film ever.

On a sort of related note a saw an old interview of Joan Collins this week. She was talking about a film and kissing Roger Moore - lovely apparently, and Tony Curtis - like Kissing an ash tray, apparently. I wondered if that was her having Marilyn’s back!! ❤️

I love Some Like it Hot.

It is a wonderful film. I also love the Ab Fab parody of it.

It was filmed in black and white because the make up was so thick and greenish it looked strange in colour. The director also thought Jack and Tony looked more convincing as women in black and white!

HagsRule · 09/01/2026 21:38

Oh some like it hot is one of my favourite favourite films ever. Love jack lemmon. Both of them really; Tony Curtis was fab too and Marilyn...what can I say.

The train scene is superb. In fact every part of that film, every line is funny.

Floisme · 09/01/2026 21:52

Marvellous film. Anyone who hasn’t seen it should do so before it gets cancelled.

Mind you I do hold it partly responsible for seeding the ridiculous notion that women can’t tell the difference. Likewise Tootsy.

MaggieBsBoat · 09/01/2026 21:55

Oh what a glorious film. I’m going to watch it. Marilyn is just fabulous in it. So funny and beautiful and what fabulous broads those two geezers are!

Billy Wilder at his very best. One of the finest comedies ever made. I adore it.

I think the joke is that nobody, but nobody, would be fooled, especially by 'Daphne'.

VoodooQualities · 09/01/2026 22:43

It's a brilliant film. There's other stuff much more recent though that wouldn't have got made in the last few years - Peter Kay as Geraldine in that Britain's Got Talent parody, and Miranda buying her clothes from the transwoman shop...

I rewatched the League of Gentlemen recently too and that scene at the very beginning made me laugh but guiltily - Babs Cabs - though granted that was nigh on 30 years ago now.

worrisomeasset · 09/01/2026 22:44

A comedy about two cross-dressing musicians that was released in 1959 should have aged extremely badly considering that comedy becomes dated more quickly than any other genre. Incredibly, it's aged extremely well. Is it the best film that's ever been made? I don't know but I've yet to se a film that's better.

ISTR that the make-up only worked because the film was in black and white.
