Sorry for digression - Daphne on bull fiddle, Josephine on sax, invading female spaces... it must irritate the TRAs to have people laughing at cross dressing. They pass better than most trans I've seen photos of, even with short hair, though they did have a serious make-up department.

Every time someone new joins us at work, I think of the band welcoming ‘the new girls’ with “you’ll be sorrrrreee!”.

if I’m contemplating clothes shopping and regretting sizing, I hear Daphne saying ‘my dear, I have the most divine seamstress, comes in just once a month’.

And I hope MY mother never finds out!

JellySaurus · 10/01/2026 00:18

Because it is genius.

Anyway, it may not be as bad as you think. I got my they/them to watch it with me. They enjoyed it and said afterwards that they had expected it to be transphobic, but it wasn’t.

(I used 3rdPP just now to protect my dc’s privacy, not because I go along with this nonsense.)

What about Life of Brian? Loretta, hmm?

I want to be a woman. It’s my right as a man!

'Rough, hairy beasts with eight hands.'

The Broadway musical version of Some Like It Hot won a few Tony awards a few years ago. I was reading the synopsis and they've changed it so that Jerry ends up realising he's both Gerry AND Daphne and needs to live as his authentic self. Oh and he was played by a pansexual non-binary actor. Really!

I do hope you're joking. Sadly, I suspect you're not.

JellySaurus · 10/01/2026 10:25

Let me guess: a male non-binary actor?

Because the part makes absolutely no sense if it is played by a female 🙄

Won a Tony for best actor in a musical, no less!

When the film was made most women had short hair. Long hair was old-fashioned.
For most of last century (so post 1918) short hair was expected for women. Long hair had a brief comeback in the 50s, but put up in chignons and French pleats, and again in the early 70s (curtains) for both sexes. The idea that short hair = male would have appeared ridiculous.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/01/2026 16:23

Also the case in the 1920s when the film was set. Time of huge change for women's fashions as skirts got shorter, some daring women started wearing trousers and obvious make-up, and lots of women had their long hair bobbed, and later permed when that became practicable and fashionable. Must have made life so much easier in those days when not everyone had hot water on tap.

Well, nobody's perfect. 🤷‍♀️

😄😄😄

Look at the fiddle, it's dressed warmer than I am!

Water polo? Isn't that terribly dangerous?
I'll say, I had 3 ponies drown under me.

if I were a girl, and I am....

When they take us to the ladies morgue, when they undress us, I tell you, I'm gonna die of shame.

My favourite film.

Igmum · 11/01/2026 13:32

I love this film, thanks for the thread will rewatch it tonight xx

HagsRule · 14/01/2026 15:52

Ignoring the horror of the Broadway re-write of the story (thanks @AnnunciataM ! ) I'm just glad it's still there to watch on iPlayer. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it tbh. Introduced it to my brother in law a few years ago at Christmas time and as well as laughing like a drain, he couldn't take his eyes off Marilyn Monroe (especially in the train/nightie scene). It was funny watching it with him as I totally see how sexy she is as well. My BiL is quite a shy, gentle man so I think introducing him to this film was eye opening! Glad he loved it (for the jokes as well as Marilyn) 😄
