Welcome one and all. Quick précis - women's pub, rodent staff, apparently we're sane.

I have a tapered pixie!
No that's not a boiled fairy, it's a hairstyle.

Because I'm not very mobile I can't get to my usual hairdresser, and I found a 'mobile barber' online, a woman barber who cuts women's hair, which is the dream ticket - a lot of women's hairdressers don't have the skill to cut hair short, because so few women have short hair; and a lot of male barbers unashamedly flatly refuse to cut women's hair.

I told her how I like my hair and she said 'Ah, you mean a tapered pixie'.

She did a nice job, and isn't it funny how you instantly feel better when your hair is done?Smile

TheTaperedPixie would be a good username, wouldn't it?

lcakethereforeIam · 13/01/2026 16:19

Sounds like a pub I'd drink in. When I'm sightseeing a town, don't think it'd be my local. I don't think I could afford the house prices.

I call my hairstyle...hair. I'm hoping one day I'll figure out what I want to do with it. I was in a hurry to get out the other day. Gave my hair a quick brush and, as I was making my way to the door, I thought about how women and girls were supposed to brush their hair one hundred times. I think I'd achieved a personal best..worst? of three; left, right, back albeit with quite a large brush.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 13/01/2026 16:52

@MarieDeGournay your tapered pixie made me think of Julia Roberts, in the film Hook.

I wish I could brush my hair but I have lost my hairbrush!

I definitely had it yesterday when I washed my hair, as I need it to do a proper job with the dryer, but it has since vanished into thin air. It always lives in the same place, on my dressing table and never moves from my bedroom except to be cleaned. I've looked in all the usual places - and some unusual ones - but no luck. My stepmother would have suggested asking St Anthony but, not being a Catholic myself, it might seem a bit presumptuous. I will just have to wait until it turns up in some place that has me thinking "wtf was I thinking, putting it there?"

p.s. I do have a smaller, handbag brush, so my hair is not completely feral, but it's not the same 😟

Chersfrozenface · 13/01/2026 16:56

@AuntieMsDamsonCrumble in my experience the only way to find a misplaced item like a hairbrush is to buy a replacement, whereupon the original will immediately turn up

WearyAuldWumman · 13/01/2026 17:13

This is the way @Chersfrozenface .

Yes… I’m still waiting for my hair to grow up. It gets trimmed, then progresses to, ‘hm, probably bought to get it cut sometime soon’ to ‘must remember to ring an make an appointment’ through to ‘shit, it really is too long now’, …then at least another week till I remember to make the appointment and there’s nearly always a wait because what has finally prompted me is a holiday or Christmas but I’ve not left long enough so it has to be after that. Ends up at twice a year which really isn’t enough.

So pleased for you, Marie. I'm another who likes her hair very short and it's always a relief to find a hairdresser who knows how to cut short hair properly. A new young hairdresser recently started her own one-woman business in our small village, so of course I immediately made an appointment and was delighted to find how well she cuts short hair. She offers wet or dry cuts, as well as the usual full wash, cut and blow-dry and takes such trouble getting it right.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/01/2026 17:23

My hair is longish and curly and not coloured, so a mix of brown and grey. Dull really.
Hairdresser tomorrow, but just a trim round, nothing exciting.

EmpressaurusKitty · 13/01/2026 17:25

I had a Grade 1 a while ago, then grew it out to a 3 & experimented with dyeing it green & purple, then got bored & grew it again so that it’s now nearly shoulder length. I’m embracing the grey, I love long grey hair.

lcakethereforeIam · 13/01/2026 17:29

I dislike going to the hairdressers and am unable to cut the damned stuff myself so I don't get it done as often as I should do. When it's so long I have to fish it out of the sink when doing the pots I'll usually sort out an appointment and lose about half the length so I can forget about it for another few months. Fella prefers long hair and i don't care enough to mind indulging him.

New rant: I'm getting really annoyed, upset and angry about the number of threads/ posts on MN in general, slagging off older people.
It seems we're all mean, lazy, thoughtless, useless and selfish.

Yip. Same.

Swashbuckled · 13/01/2026 18:32

I wear my hair in a swashbuckling loose bun; it’s good at hiding things like the last time it was brushed.

Sympathies to all the injured.

I’m not venturing out there much at the moment @FuzzyPuffling What age are the older people being picked upon? I saw one about Saturday morning shoppers, but only glanced.

lcakethereforeIam · 13/01/2026 18:43

Fortunately I've not seen any such threads. Do the people posting these slurs think they will never grow old? They'll give themselves bellyaches.

Hedgehogforshort · 13/01/2026 18:47

Perhaps we should organise a protest, pick a thread and show up on masse with some well honed responses.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/01/2026 18:48

It's mostly moans about grandparents, especially the retired sort. But might be about drivers, people shopping at times inconvenient to others, slow movers, people claiming pensions, nhs " bed blockers"....almost any thread will end up with an older-people-bashing post or two.

As you are now, so I once was: as I am now, so you will be.

(Note, I've just done an emergency school run, and helped DD with the cost of wedding outfits for DGC. Doesn't make me perfect, makes me Doing My Best with love. )

Hedgehogforshort · 13/01/2026 18:52

I always think they exaggerate on the MIL threads unless there are a serious amount of psychopathic grandmothers and nans out there.

Swashbuckled · 13/01/2026 18:53

Love this, Fuzzy.

Magpiecomplex · 13/01/2026 18:54

I bought a new hairbrush at the weekend, just after getting my hair cut. Blunt cut short bob, and yes, my hairdresser is barber trained so she isn't afraid to go short, and has the skill to do it well.

I spent a bit of time on Elderly Parents recently. There are some very difficult elderly parents on there, and believable to me because of the specialist nature of advice being asked. But AIBU is a different matter.

Swashbuckled · 13/01/2026 18:58

This was the first tapered pixie cut that came up when I googled.

VERY nice @MarieDeGournay

The response which I sometimes give in real life - and which often causes upset is - "You'll be old yourself some day, if you're lucky."

ETA I've also used it on these boards.

lcakethereforeIam · 13/01/2026 19:07

Lovely. Like the earrings too.

I believe some older people can be pains, as can folk of any age. The ones who aren't won't get complaints threads made about them. I wonder though if too often the complaint is them taking up space and getting in the way of the busy, busy young folk moaning about them.

True, Cake. Too many people can only see things from their own perspective.
