Under official guidance that was updated in 2012, patients should not share wards overnight, share bathroom facilities or have to walk through areas occupied by patients of the opposite sex to get to the toilets.

How do you all feel about mixed sex intensive care units/critical care units? How is this different from a basic ward in terms of dignity? I dont think it does but it's still justified.

It's not ideal for dignity, but the safety issues are probably fewer; at least if the patients are under intensive care they're unlikely to have much scope or spare energy for sexually harassing anyone.

Higher ratio of staff to patients too

@IwantToRetire, try reading Annex B of the document you link to.

As a teaser, I will let you know that, in a document called “Delivering same-sex accommodation,” Annex B is called “Delivering same-sex accommodation for trans people and gender variant children.”

Highlights include “Trans people should be accommodated according to their presentation: the way they dress, and the name and pronouns they currently use,” and “It applies to toilet and bathing facilities.”

No, no - not meant as a dig (in fact you said you hadn’t read it!). More to point out that, although this (and every NHS policy based on it) purports to be about delivering same-sex accommodation (or eliminating mixed-sex accommodation, as the title is alternatively) and says how important same-sex accommodation is, and drills NHS staff on what to do if there is a breach of same-sex accommodation, built right into this very policy is a sub-policy that fundamentally breaks it.

The NHS accommodation policy is mixed-sex-by-stealth.

I suspect that one reason the whole "sex is nebulous" thing has got as much traction as it has with the NHS management, isn't to do with conviction in many cases, it's to do with being under pressure. The more they feel able and justified to treat staff members, and patients, as interchangeable components, the easier it is to deal with staff shortages and bed shortages. Just shove whoever you've got into anywhere and tell anyone who complains that they're a far right bigot and pearl-clutcher.

And as we have seen time and again a management style adopted in other areas eg Universities, so called charities, news providers, and - well just about every where.
