'Let people self-declare that they are legally male or female' says Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission

People who identify as transgender should to be allowed to legally switch from male to female (or vice-versa) on demand, the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission has said.

The commission has called on Stormont's Department of Health to change the rules accordingly, and the department in turn has pledged to "consider" the report.

It follows years of rising opposition to self-ID across the UK, and comes the wake of the UK Supreme Court judgment which delivered a blow to the self-ID movement by defining “woman” as an adult who was born female, not merely anyone who self-identifies as such.

Just what we need. More confusion. More court cases. More women at risk.

Let's just scrap Male and Female, its a pointless segregation if it is a piece of made up nonsense.

Everything needs to be individual.
Individual changing rooms, in schools, sports facilities, and work places
Individual hospital rooms
Individual toilets
Individual youth hostel rooms
Individual tents for scouts / guides
Individual rooms in military barracks
Individual rooms for all school trips.
Individual prison cells / toilets / showers.

Sport just scrap it. If female means nothing then scrap all sports.
Exluding horse and motor sports, Even filles and mares carry less weight than colts, geldings and stallions. They don't get to identify out of being male or female!

You can't ask people too share if they have no idea what sex the person they are sharing is. Same with the organiser if they have not idea what sex the people are they cannot ask them to share

Yep, let them also declare they're 8 when they're in fact 38, that they're Martian when in fact from Malvern, that they're physically disabled when in fact nothing wrong with them, that they're black when in fact they have multiple generations going back as white as white can be.
And therein lies the problem, when it comes to trans, facts go out of the window, it's all opinions. And one thing about humans, we're not short of an opinion or three.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 26/12/2025 19:07

When did it become a human rights issue to want to be legally counted as something that you’re not?

It’s a legal fiction that has repercussions far beyond the individual.

flyingbuttress43 · 26/12/2025 19:39

And trans women must be sure to have their cervical screening while trans men must get their prostates checked. What doctors? You can't find a trans woman's cervix. How bizarre. After all David Lammy insisted transwomen grew a cervix. You are obviously not looking hard enough.

BellsoftheCarols · 26/12/2025 19:40

Do these people not hear how nuts they sound?

I'm going to identify as state pension age.
Give me my free bus pass.

You are being generous in using the word 'opinion'. It implies some rational thinking at least when there is absolutely none. I prefer 'fantasy', where rationality it seldom found and indeed is not necessary.

Let people identify as whatever they hell they like, wolves, Klingons, elves, I really don't care any more. If the establishment are really so batshit to falsify legal documents then its their funeral (although tax payer issues involved) they are the ones who'll have to pick up the pieces over and over again.

So long as women who need single sex spaces have access to them, and they are solely for people who are in reality actually female, whatever.

But of course no, that's one of the main goals of 'let men pick their sex and enjoy themselves while women suffer'.

No they don't because they believe in that fiction.

How about the tax payer being able to identify the areas they want their taxes spent on. Human Rights Commissions isn't one that would make my list of useful things to pay for.

If this is ok then how about my dad gets to self identify out of his carefully gathered SIPP pension which - under brand new inheritance tax rules - will be demolished by Rachel Reeves. Maybe he could identify out of being dead in future so the government can never collect?

Edited for typo

Once you start with legal fictions, you're on a very rocky road. And of course it's not a human rights issue.

Some legal fictions are a useful short-cut to a just, beneficial decision - adoptive parents becoming the legal parents of a child is a good example - the adoption is not a fiction, the day-to-day parenting is not a fiction, the new family for the child is not a fiction, it's just the legal status that is a fiction.

Making up an entirely new legal fiction, that people can change sex, is fictional on all levels. The idea of a man becoming a woman is a fiction in society, in everyday life, as well as in the law. It is legislating for an impossibility. The only benefit is to the small number of people who get a GRC, while the effect on society as a whole is anything but beneficial, it is turmoil.

Reading through the UK GRA2004 and the Irish GRA2015, you can't help wondering what were they thinking? where had their critical faculties gone? did it not occur to them that they were making a mockery of the law by legislating for something so incredibly niche and so irrational?

But of course the true believer would reply that your truth is not theirs, that there are multiple truths. And that they're truth has nothing to do with yours, their truth doesn't object to you, so why don't you stop objecting to them.

silverwrath · 27/12/2025 14:24

I thought the Irish had more sense.

But then look what's happened in Scotland. Australia. Canada. etc.

Humanity is losing its goddamn mind.

That's the religious tolerance/multi cultural tolerance argument.

Which is fine.

But it involves provisions for all so that people can live peacefully alongside each other, and not trying to end/prevent the provisions (and language and laws and rights) of others as a part of practicing a personal belief. And that is the point at which article 8 rights can be limited: the freedoms cannot affect others' rights.

That men would like to argue that they have some perceived human right to be with a non consenting woman and strip search her/see her in a state of undress as an essential part of practicing their gender identity is.... an interesting view of article 8 to put it mildly. 'Warped out of all recognition' and 'entirely perverted from its original purpose' might be nearer the mark.

I did think of the adoption example, but as you rightly say, Marie, this is quite a different situation. The legal fiction in adoption is a pragmatic move which benefits all parties. What people are being asked to swallow with gender does not. Ironic that the old hate-figure Norman Tebbit was one of the few to pick up on the inherent illogic of the GRA.

1984Now · 27/12/2025 17:01

It's interesting that the black and brown community point blank refuse any trans-racialism.
Just read the fascinating story of Rachel Dolezal.
We do not allow people to trans into any age they wish.
Or any disability or disease.
Yet trans, a mental illness at worst, temperament at best, is allowed to be re-defined as an identity not just mimicing the opposite sex (or no sex at all), but effectively hiving it.
Imagine that...we re-order society for those so mentally distressed they believe they are not their own inherent biology.
And we also re-order society for people who temperamentally wish to be the category they're not.

Madness. Utter madness.

I genuinely think we're in the post-liberal age. Where the very apex of liberalism is also it's jump the shark moment, where liberal society at the apogee of its evolution now creates and lets thrive illiberalism.
We're also seeing it with mass legal migration and escalating illegal migration, liberalism at its peak/jump the shark period promoting absolute open borders (just watch the madness of Zack Polanski aiming his Xmas message to hundreds and thousands of non-Brits in France).
In both radical trans ideology and radical open borders ethos, those that are concerned about the disrupting of boundaries (allowing people to change gender, allowing migrants to stay who've illegally entered) are the ones who are judged and belittled, effectively the majority, what you might call the great swathe of reasonable Middle Britain, are to be insulted, told we're wrong, belittled, while the narrower band of opinion imposes that opinion.
This is not the liberal country I grew up in, where niche interests are imposed against the natural order of broad acceptability.
Hence, the move to a post-liberal state.
