Evening All <salutes>

Oooh! a nice new thread and everything looking cosy already. The gerbils must have been working hard all day.

I hope those who have been under the weather are feeling better today and hopefully, any lingering germs were left behind in the old thread.

Gluewein for me too, please and to go with it, a piece of Apfelstrudel mit schlagsahne, bitte.

And no, I don't really speak German, but I do speak food in several languages.

I do make a fine Apfelstrudel if I may say so.
Your username reminded me that I found damsons in Lidl just before I left for France (in November?????How???), they are in the fridge. I hope to make them last until dd comes home for Christmas, then I'll turn them into proper plum dumplings, not the approximation of a plum dumpling Lidl sells during Eastern Europe week.

Don't get me wrong, he's quite attractive, but six of him might be considered de trop?

One each?

Good evening all. The early night didn't work, but I seem to have a much milder version of the flu than the husband or boy did (or many of the patrons of the BS by the sound of things). Hopefully it doesn't get worse tomorrow. A hot chocolate in real life just made me cough uncontrollably, so I'm going to try a pint of not too dry sherry if the gerbils have any. I remember when I was 8 or 9 being trusted to pour it for Father Christmas by myself for the first time. I tried a bit, quite liked it, finished the glass and had a second glass (and possibly third) before refilling it for FC and lying down on the sofa for a bit. I had a cough and cold at the time and felt much better for an hour or so. Perhaps it works as an adult. I have never bought a bottle of sherry myself -except for the sweet stuff that goes in trifle which I've never tried drinking - so have no idea if I like it as an adult

Buy a decent (expensive) bottle. It's worth it. I had a run in with the doctor a while back and she refused to renew my prescription for sleeping tablets.

So as a tee total beetle I took to drinking a glass of a very fine, but expensive, sherry each night.

Horrified that she'd turned a tee total patient into a drinker she started me back in my sleeping tablets!!

And while I'm on one...

Those with flu and eating issues I highly recommend Quaker golden syrup porridge oats. 2 minutes in the microwave. Ready the same time as your cup of tea is ready and you are back in bed eating porridge a minute later.

You must give the Apfelstrudel recipe to Maud, I haven't had a decent one since I was in Cologne.

That reminds me, it will soon be time to taste the damson gin Gin

I've had those porridge sachets before and found them good when ill. I need to recover enough to go in a supermarket and buy some.

What’s this about? It’s hard to join a thread when everything is cryptic!

It is an immersive imaginary pub where chats between patrons go on, some use AI and google images, we can run of into complete madness.

all tastes are catered for and some of us identify as animals…………………….. your gonna have to look up some names Marie is a philosopher. Android is a robot experimenter.

Boiled is a tunnocks hoarder who likes the odd herbal smoke

I am a territorial hedgehog who likes snowballs which boiled and i argue about

You are welcome if you are a biological woman, if not we will find you out.

Glad you said it first, Random! I was about to ask which one got the cherry.

Ditto. Boily too, I think!

lcedcakethereforeIam · 10/12/2025 21:53

I've been seized by the urge to make marshmallow. Talk me down someone.

I tried a bit of a really nice homemade one and it's completely ruined the supermarket stuff for me (fortunately the Tunnocks filling is its own thing and hasn't been affected).

Fortunately I haven't currently got the ingredients I would need...but I'm going shopping on Friday 😣🆘️

I've never made marshmallow, so I looked up the recipe. It was fine until I got to this bit:

CAUTION: This mixture is extremely hot and can be dangerous. Do not leave unattended.

What will it do if you leave it unattended @lcedcakethereforeIam ?

Could this turn into another < whispers> sourdough thread?

lcedcakethereforeIam · 10/12/2025 22:04

I'm not going to leave it unattended. I wouldn't dare.

What’s this about? It’s hard to join a thread when everything is cryptic!

Have you hung about a bit to try to get a toe-hold, Jk987?

A couple of other Bluestockingers have explained things to you, I'd just like to add that the gerbils have a heroic background - some time ago, when a PhD student was found to be illegally 'scraping' data to get evidence of transphobia on MN or something like that, the phrase 'Foucault-addled grievance gerbils' cropped up, and it appealed to us, and gerbils appeared in the Bluestocking and then started to take on more and more roles. They just did, OK? 😄
And then the gerbils invited along fellow-creatures like capybaras and red pandas and - basically any cute furry animal we see a picture of will probably end up in the Bluestocking!

The other source of crypticness [which is not a word, apparently] is images generated from our usernames. Yours would be a bit of a challenge, but I'm sure we'll come up with something, if you stick around which I hope you willSmile

Evening all. I'm another probably-flu victim. I was vaxxed, but so many of us have come down with this (as nasty as anything I've had for decades) that I think it's an evil mutant. I actually managed to eat a dinner-sized dinner this evening for the first time in 5 days, so hope I'm on my way to recovery. Still repulsed by the idea of alcohol, which is very very very annoying, having gone dry for November.

Main sustenance for the last few days was those little plastic tubs of fruit cocktail.

I read bits of the last thread, but decided I was too stupid to post.

I did manage to play the Chronophoto game each day. And sleep, with interludes of coughing and wheezing, for 10-12 hours a night.

Don't catch it, if you have a choice.

So sorry you've had the flu too. It actually IS an evil mutant - a variant that developed after the strains for this year's vaccine were chosen. DS is an epidemiologist who did a lot of work on flu some years ago, so keeps tabs and warns his aged parents.

Igneococcus · 10/12/2025 18:28

Just the flu, Marie, I arrived at home about midnight, felt a wee bit off the next morning but thought it might be all the short nights I had the days before, by the afternoon I had a temp of 38.6 C, was shivering and all my joints hurt, spent all the days I had planned to see family and friends in bed. At least two of my colleagues who were at the same meeting fell ill at the same time and with the same symptoms, I have now heard. One of them (in the US) was tested and confirmed as flu A.

oh, how nasty for you. Such a shame to miss seeing family and friends and horrible to be so poorly away from home. I've had flu badly twice in my life and still remember how very ill I felt. Now trying very hard at my age and with my weak lungs not to catch it this time.
