XG's Cocona came out as transmasculine nonbinary + got mastectomy

A female member of Japanese idol group XG just came out as "transmasculine nonbinary" and said she got a mastectomy earlier this year.

She seemed pretty cool as she had a shaved head, and is the only female idol in existence with a shaved head (most female idols don't even have short hair much less a shaved head) but of course... she had to identify out of being a woman.

She also posted a photo with her mastectomy scars which just really screams indoctrination to me because it's so by the book.

It's quite sad as she's only 20, and the ideology is just so clearly regressive and harmful. But it's worse here because XG is a SUPER popular group, so she might inspire more women and girls to harm themselves, and helps to legitimize this ideology more.

cocona didnt change their sex though?? when did i say anything about that

mikoooo2232 · 06/12/2025 17:50

if your talking about sex, then yes your right you cant change sex but gender is a social construct so anyone can change their gender

Social constructs don't normally require irreversible body modification surgery. An androgynous, or even masculine, look can be achieved in much easier ways.

omg old people are so unbelievable like its their body they can do what they want and if this idolises other young people do "harm" themselves the same way then thats not coconas fault. also please dont refer to them as female after they just came out as non binary thank you

If someone wanted a doctor to chop their legs off as they identified as disabled should the doctor be allowed to do it? What happened to the hippocratic oath of do no harm?

DisappearingGirl · 06/12/2025 18:05

Gahh, my 11 year old DD and her friends are all into K-pop and J-pop so will probably hear about this.

Re the comment about management allowing it - I wonder if they thought it would look cool and edgy. Japan is still pretty conservative about gender roles in real life but, as elsewhere in the world, anything goes if someone wants to sell a product.

You guys love to conflate sex and gender.

Please tell me, if it's only gender they are changing then why do trans people change their sex markers in law? Get birth certificates, passports and other ID to say their sex is the gender they identify as? Why is sex "assigned" at birth according to trans people? Why was someone imprisoned in Poland for 10 days for saying you only find male and female skeletons? Why can't we call a transwoman a male and not be called a bigot/transphobe/fascist?

oh gosh, this topic on r/kpop (reddit) has +7661 points as of now... OTL which is a huge amount for that sub, i don't know if I've ever even seen that many.

It seems like there is very little overlap between kpop and gender critical people. I don't know where else to talk about this, as r/kpop is usually where I post about kpop but I've already been banned from there just for saying JKR wasn't a bad person basically. (had to jump through several hoops to make a new acc that wouldn't get insta banned on reddit)

I just can't understand celebrating a woman cutting off her healthy breasts off at 20, and pretending she's not a woman because she's gender non-confirming. This ideology is so harmful and regressive. She was perfectly cool and fine the way she was!

It's so sickening... and how can so many people be that brainwashed into celebrating this?

I keep hoping this ideology is reaching it's peak and we're turning around, but it just keeps getting worse.

I’m a K-Pop fan, OP - mainly Stray Kids but I dip into other bits and bobs. And I’m GC to the hilt 🤣. So please chat away here.

I’m glad you mentioned it as DD will probably hear about it sooner or later - she’s pretty GC herself so we can talk about it sensibly. You’re right about many of the fans. I really hope this doesn’t become a thing.

SHE doesn’t need to have her breasts surgically removed to be non-binary. Being non-binary is a rejection of gender stereotypes, not a third sex, and doesn’t require self-mutilation. It may be ‘her body’ so she can do what she wants with it, but she has influence over her fans, and a some of them are incredibly impressionable and may copy her.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 06/12/2025 20:19

This is all so sad. I know a woman whose mastectomy scars (cancer treatment) have failed twice, and is facing further surgery. Some of these young gender identity women will have similar issues with their surgery.

If you had a child you might not be so fine with them having cosmetic surgery.

gender is a social construct so anyone can change their gender
Absolutely.

I rejected the socially constructed gender that was imposed on me when I was a little girl, and I've been gender-non-conforming ever since.

As you accurately point out, Cocona hasn't changed her sex, and neither did I.
So both Cocona and I are women, we were born female and always will be female, and no matter what kind of gender identity we prefer, we are women.

It's funny, but when I first saw your user name it conjured up an image of a willowy woman with dark, flowing locks. I've since realised that is probably not the case. 😆

Yes, her sex is still female even if her 'gender' is nonbinary.

I soooooo regret the moment I chose Marie de Gournay as my username!
I don't know what came over me. And it's not even that I'm a huge fan of M de G, though of course I admire her... it just seemed like a good idea at the time, and I wanted a French connection, being such a Francophile.
I'm stuck with it now, so it's a bit late to change it🙄
No dark flowing locks, though I am tall and probably only a kilo or three shy of 'willowy'😁

I find this especially concerning as KPOP is significantly popular with autistic people, and there’s already a higher rate of trans/NB girls in the autistic community.

It’s so frustrating that the trend with NB girls seems to be very focused on ‘top-surgery’, like it’s a real goal for so many. Imagine them
coming out of the other side of this phase and realising that they’ve mutilated themselves, it’s going to be so traumatic. What if they go on to have children, they will have no choice other than to formula feed. It’s so sad on every level.

There are going to be many thousands more girls having their breasts removed before this mad cult burns itself out.

Grim. But the plastic surgeons will be making good money.

You seem to think she isn’t female any more, looking at your later posts. Female is a sex class, and she is still female - it’s not something that can be changed.

omg young people are so illiterate and lacking in critical thinking skills

Shortshriftandlethal · 07/12/2025 11:02

DrBlackbird · 06/12/2025 17:13

I’m sorry for her but utterly and absolutely infuriated that she posted photos post mastectomies.

These ‘stars’ like Elliot Page and Mae Martin with their millions securing private surgeons and the best post op care to become their special most authentic selves and then posting bloody photos of it on their Instagram accounts. Influencing perhaps thousands of impressionable and likely autistic young girls with the subtext that they should hate their bodies too and, in turn, get their breasts removed.

Gender ideology has to be one of the worst and most insane beliefs to spread through societies since what? Beliefs in witches in the 17thC?!

I think it is in large part linked to the recent surge in mental health issues and diagnoses. People, and younger people in particular, are finding it very difficult to adjust themselves to reality and to the normal stresses and frustrations of life. The urge to escape into 'a safe space' and not have to face or deal with conflict or angst of any type. Social media and on-line lives also detach one from real relationships and earthly realities.

Centering one's feelings at all times, as if they are representative of the whole truth, rather than being simply fluctuating weather systems and fleeting storms. The body is in many ways our fate. The one we have been assigned and the one we have to deal with.

OMG young people are so predictably naive, yet full of the sense that they alone have seen the truth or are the first ever to experience the full range of human drives and emotions.

With age you see that fads and trends come and go - and sometimes re-arrange themselves in new forms. You see people make the same old mistakes over and over again. Each new generation never seems to learn from the past. They are compelled to keep treading the same ground over and over again.

'Non - binary' is a contemporary framing device. And nobody can change sex. Healthy, functional body parts once removed cannot be replaced - and their removal leaves an ugly scar.

I initially welcomed the emergence of ‘non-binary’ as I thought we might be finally seeing the end of the rigid gender stereotypes that push girls into pink/sexy/girly and boys into blue/macho etc. But no, it’s all about biological denial self-hate and mutilation.

Hermyknee · 07/12/2025 11:25

I think it’s a highly sexualised industry and she wants to make herself less ‘sexual’ and less desired sexually by strangers looking at her, so people see ‘her’ and not her as a fantasy object. I don’t know what has gone on in her past, but I would think she would need some help.

If she waited another 20 years and she could have kept her breasts as being less desired by men happens naturally.
