XG's Cocona came out as transmasculine nonbinary + got mastectomy

A female member of Japanese idol group XG just came out as "transmasculine nonbinary" and said she got a mastectomy earlier this year.

She seemed pretty cool as she had a shaved head, and is the only female idol in existence with a shaved head (most female idols don't even have short hair much less a shaved head) but of course... she had to identify out of being a woman.

She also posted a photo with her mastectomy scars which just really screams indoctrination to me because it's so by the book.

It's quite sad as she's only 20, and the ideology is just so clearly regressive and harmful. But it's worse here because XG is a SUPER popular group, so she might inspire more women and girls to harm themselves, and helps to legitimize this ideology more.

It's hard not to feel sad that such a young woman has felt compelled to do this.

LongOutBreath · 06/12/2025 08:16

So depressing. Popular culture essentially punishing non conformity.

BaronessBomburst · 06/12/2025 10:24

Sinead O'Connor had a shaved head back in the 80's so there has been at least one other, but yes, I totally agree with you. It's very sad. Not wanting to conform to stereotypes doesn't mean that you're not a woman.

Add Demi Moore to that list.

I took it to mean there are no other Japanese or Kpop female idols with shaved heads but I know nothing about the genre so could be wrong!

I think it is particularly worrying that she is Japanese as there is good reason to escape the expectations around being a woman there, so lots of girls will emulate her.

Summerhillsquare · 06/12/2025 10:57

The fabulously successful women cited came up in a different era, when there was some slackening of the rigid gender stereotypes forced on women. As the Overton window has moved right, younger women are having to conform and consume more stereotyped standards again, or 'identify ' out of it just for some breathing space. Tragic.

MarieDeGournay · 06/12/2025 10:58

It's awful. Apart from the horrors of what this young woman has done to herself, there's the influence that she will have on so many young women/girls who admired her for being non-conforming.
Her fans risk following her example -
not comfortable with gender stereotypes of how to be a woman? so stop being a woman! problem solved!

I hate it when women in the spotlight start off by being different, non-conforming, and a role model to girls who don't want to do the whole girly thing.
Then after they have attracted that following, they declare that they are no longer women.

Christine of Christine and the Queens is a good example - she was such a one-off, so original and different, such a unique and gifted woman performer, and then...... she was a bloke😒

OnAShooglyPeg · 06/12/2025 11:10

I'm surprised management allowed this. The Japanese idol scene is so carefully manufactured and managed that the young women have next to no freedom. They have to be seen to be both available and attainable to enable the parasocial relationships that make the management firms money. It's both sad and scary when you look into it.

It is very sad. The whole aesthetic of a lot of girls where I live is based, without their knowing it, I feel sure, on a look that misses being Taylor Swift and ends up like a porn girl - very long hair worn down , sticky black shelf-like eye lashes, and swollen, fish pout lips. This is what girls are being pushed into on the other side of being trans so to speak.

Justme56 · 06/12/2025 14:18

Personally I think by escaping one set of stereotypes they are actually just creating another - the ‘Non-Binary’ one. There certainly seems to be many girls who think NB means short hair and mastectomies.

Interesting point - I'm not clear why she felt she had to lose her breasts in order to be non-binary.

Does NB mean denying the 'gender' binary by ignoring it and taking whatever elements you like from male/female stereotypes [which I think describes a lot of us on here!]

Or does it mean removing any elements which are specific to the gender binary, such as breasts...?

And how can you be transmasc AND NB, since transmasc is all about stereotypical masculinity and about as binary as you can get....?

Perhaps I am looking for logic and reason in the wrong place😏

UtopiaPlanitia · 06/12/2025 14:47

Like so much of modern life, these decisions are emotions-based rather than logic-based so they aren't going to make sense 🤷‍♀️

And Andi Oliver......the chef.

And the recent winner of Bake Off, Jasmine, is bald. That was hair loss through alopecia though, but the she decided to stop wearing a wig. She looks great!

There are all kinds of sub-divisions within gender which you can identify into. Joss Prior now refers to himself as 'transfemme' and you get also 'Fem Boys'

I guess the idea is that you an essentially sexless person, or person of no fixed gender, who just happens to veer either towards the more masculine or more feminine aesthetic.

I do mean kpop/jpop idols, as in this case an "idol" is a specific genre of music/product.

Comedian Mae Martin is another NB who’s had her breasts removed.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 06/12/2025 15:30

The photo is deeply disturbing. This woman should have had psychological support, not a double mastectomy. I hate how this is being normalised and glorified - it’s utterly fucked up.

DrBlackbird · 06/12/2025 17:13

I’m sorry for her but utterly and absolutely infuriated that she posted photos post mastectomies.

These ‘stars’ like Elliot Page and Mae Martin with their millions securing private surgeons and the best post op care to become their special most authentic selves and then posting bloody photos of it on their Instagram accounts. Influencing perhaps thousands of impressionable and likely autistic young girls with the subtext that they should hate their bodies too and, in turn, get their breasts removed.

Gender ideology has to be one of the worst and most insane beliefs to spread through societies since what? Beliefs in witches in the 17thC?!

Ddakji · 06/12/2025 17:19

The women mentioned above are all irrelevant as they are not J-Pop idols in 2025.

This is pretty extraordinary. As you say, OP, these idols’ images are heavily policed by their record companies. And Japanese culture in general is pretty conservative - so I doubt a very gender non-conforming woman would go down well.

If it wasn’t so extreme it would feel like a sop to their western audience. Bit like the trans character in Squid Game.

omg old people are so unbelievable like its their body they can do what they want and if this idolises other young people do "harm" themselves the same way then thats not coconas fault. also please dont refer to them as female after they just came out as non binary thank you

People can't change sex, so someone female will always be female.

You can believe in gender woo if you want to, but you can't force rational people to do the same.

'old people are so unbelievable like its their body' works for me!😁

If you're born female you stay female it's not our fault it's just the way it is sorry

MarvellousMonsters · 06/12/2025 17:36

I find this especially concerning as KPOP is significantly popular with autistic people, and there’s already a higher rate of trans/NB girls in the autistic community.

It’s so frustrating that the trend with NB girls seems to be very focused on ‘top-surgery’, like it’s a real goal for so many. Imagine them
coming out of the other side of this phase and realising that they’ve mutilated themselves, it’s going to be so traumatic. What if they go on to have children, they will have no choice other than to formula feed. It’s so sad on every level.
