New thread, new career, slightly new honorary name!

Redshoeblueshoe · 17/11/2025 15:10

I'm so cross that I'm not a Professor.

At least I can do

bigly writing

EmploymentJudgeSigourneyHoward · 17/11/2025 15:10

I do hope after all of this we finally find out what prompted the gasp as described by @NoBinturongsHereMate in the waiting room

Some gender confusion there, Professor...

You passed the test, well done!

Wheezing at the outbreaks of Professorhood around the thread.

I have absolutely no idea!

According to Wikipedia, it comes from the Latin emerere, to complete ones service. Nothing at all do with merit, I as I used to think. And yes, it says the feminine form is emerita.

Don't worry. We'll just imagine the word Professor in front of your name

ADHDHDHDHD · 17/11/2025 15:11

Phew, just made it over in time

I’m just trying mine out. I’ve been a very busy bee.

busybusybusy2015 · 17/11/2025 15:12

You've got a whole new Brownie Six now: "Look out, we're the cross professors, Standing up to all oppressors"

TriesNotToBeCynical · 17/11/2025 15:12

ProfessorBoiledbeetle · 17/11/2025 15:08

I have absolutely no idea!

Latin rather expects women to stay women and men to stay men.

ADHDHDHDHD · 17/11/2025 15:12

What did lawyers do before trolley bags?

Cailleach1 · 17/11/2025 15:12

About Emeritus Professor address. Remember the Pool case about men playing in the women’s game. Wasn’t there an expert chappie who came on and when asked how to address him, he said that it wouldn’t be right to call him a professor as he was only Emeritus. He said they could just call him Doc instead.

ProfessorBoiledbeetle · 17/11/2025 15:13

I'm beginning to wonder if the judge has locked herself in her room and is refusing to come out?

ProfessorMyAmpleSheep · 17/11/2025 15:13

TriesNotToBeCynical · 17/11/2025 15:12

Latin rather expects women to stay women and men to stay men.

Surely not. Trans people have always existed, after all.

SqueakyDinosaur · 17/11/2025 15:13

I was a Pixie and then an Imp. Both completely unsuitable for me, as a rather stout and dreamy child.

I remember the Brownie vow as:

"I promise that I will do my best to do my duty to God: to serve the Queen and help other people, and keep the Brownie Guide Law". That would have been mid to late 70s.

CriticalCondition · 17/11/2025 15:13

I've failed to gain a professorship in time for the new thread.
Sad times.

On the plus side, there'll be another thread in about 10 minutes and that's ages in timey wimey Professorworld, right?

ProfLargofesse · 17/11/2025 15:13

Just joining in with the new naming convention.

According to Wikipedia, it comes from the Latin emerere, to complete ones service. Nothing at all do with merit, I as I used to think. And yes, it says the feminine form is emerita.

Merit itself comes from the same root, though: from the OED entry on merit:

classical Latin meritum due reward, worthiness to receive good or bad treatment, action worthy to receive such treatment, use as noun of neuter of meritus, past participle of merēre, merērī to obtain for one's share, earn as pay, deserve, probably cognate with ancient Greek μείρεσθαι to receive a share (see mero- comb. form1).

Oxford English Dictionary

The OED is the definitive record of the English language, featuring 600,000 words, 3 million quotations, and over 1,000 years of English.

From NW

Judge is sitting. Explaining the recusal application. Premised on following info - that from 2009 - 2017 MM was employed by a council and seconded to the NIPSA union and that he held a senior and key rol in the union. Because of his membership and pos in the union...

... he has apparent bias. This application is rejected by the respondent in its entirety.
Both parties have provided useful case law [gives examples in the application and response]

ADHDHDHDHD · 17/11/2025 15:13

Please someone tell me that Ms Elves she of the giant brain, was in the Brownies in an ELF six. Please!
