Case summary

Sara Morrison (SM) was the Inclusion and Audience Development Co-ordinator at Belfast Film Festival (BFF). She has an adult trans-identifying son, helped re-establish rape crisis services in Northern Ireland after a 13-year gap, and believes women’s organisations should maintain women-only spaces for vulnerable women.

Sara spoke at a Let Women Speak event in Belfast on 16 April 2023, criticising several women’s and advocacy organisations for abandoning single-sex principles. She did not identify herself or her employer, but she was recognised.

A targeted online campaign began within hours, tagging BFF and demanding she be dismissed. Sara experienced sustained online abuse and became socially isolated.

Watch the footage here (Sara starts at 1hr 4mins):

She informed BFF Director Michele Devlin (MD), who initially responded supportively. In June 2023, Michele raised concerns about Sara’s views, said the BFF Board had been shown her speech, and questioned her about sharing facilities with trans-identifying people. Sara continued working visibly through the BFF documentary season without incident.

In July 2023, during planning for Belfast Pride, an LGBT arts organisation publicly labelled Sara a “transphobic bigot,” triggering another online pile-on. BFF issued a public statement saying it was “investigating,” which intensified the pressure. An external HR investigation followed. Sara was advised to work from home, lost access to email and shared drives, and was asked to return her office keys. She felt frozen out, viewed the investigation as biased, initiated a grievance, went on sick leave, and began medication.

While she was off sick, MD attended Belfast Pride wearing a “Trans Inclusive Feminist” t-shirt and posted photos online before deleting them.
In June 2024, journalist Jo Bartosch shared Sara’s crowdfunding campaign https://x.com/jo_bartosch/status/1798410239730982919, which was amplified by JK Rowling https://x.com/jk_rowling/status/1798434418023112789.

In November 2024, Sara resigned from BFF and claimed constructive dismissal.
Sara’s case, Morrison v Belfast Film Festival, is legally significant because in Great Britain, the Forstater ruling (2021, upheld 2022) confirmed that gender-critical beliefs are protected as a philosophical belief under the Equality Act 2010. However, the Equality Act does not apply in Northern Ireland, which instead uses a patchwork of older anti-discrimination laws (including the Sex Discrimination Order 1976 and the Fair Employment and Treatment Order 1998).

How Forstater and the subsequent For Women Scotland Supreme Court ruling interact with Northern Ireland’s legislation is unresolved. As a result, this tribunal in Belfast the following week is being treated as a test case.

Sara is represented by barristers Naomi Cunningham and Charlotte Elves, as well as solicitor Simon Chambers.

Summary extracted from Nick Wallis’ blog about the case: https://genderblog.net/sara-morrison-v-belfast-film-festival/

The Employment Tribunal hearing started on Monday 10 November and is expected to last at least two weeks.

This is bitterly ironic. A single mum bravely speaks out, in her own time, about the harassment & bullying tactics of the trans mob. She is then disciplined by her employers who succumb to pressure from the trans mob.

Also thanks to @myrtlelion - Queen of threads

During the Tribunal, a panel member, Deborah Boyd, stood down for "health reasons", after Morrison’s legal team applied to have the entire judging panel removed. Naomi Cunningham accused Boyd of bias and failing to declare her bias to the court at the beginning of the tribunal. The allegations stem from Boyd’s affiliations with pro-trans women’s groups and her social media posts.

I was going back through the thread to find Myrtles summaries and got distracted by all the great insight I hadn't seen. So I was a bit slow.

Thanks for the great signpost and update. I am clearly not a thread hoster. All those other ladies made it seem so easy.

This account from an SM supporter in the room offers fascinating insight into Boyd’s behaviour in more detail:

Thsi week we've had observers engaging with the Industrial Tribunal for the first time. As a rough estimate about 100 people have been in attendance/ observered Sara's tribunal.

We have real time evidence that the 'public' observed and came away with impressions set out below:

But it has definitely left me questioning both the impartiality and the professionalism of the employment tribunal. Sarcasm and cattiness from someone who will have a hand in determining the outcome are wholly unacceptable. Nor should someone who adjudicates disputes between employers and employees in a close-knit, post-conflict, society like Northern Ireland, be openly celebrating a hostile political message like ‘Fuck the DUP.’

How do people get appointed to these paid positions of authority that have huge consequences for the lives of workers here?

This and this and this again.

The impartiality and the integrity of the entire Panel have to called into question.

EJ Sturgeon saying there was no reason to recuse and failing to satisfactorily address the points in issue, then letting the alleged "Professor" Debroah 'Fuck the DUP' Boyd step down due to health issues is raising more questions than answers.

That was really interesting.

It put into clear words the concerns many of us on here share.

New thread. Loads of info.

Yay!

(And now you know why I break out in a cold sweat at even just the thought of starting a new thread.)

Just reading these threads, and comparing the insight it has given us to those who'd rely on the BBC to find out what is going back; the difference is staggering.

Really good article.

I am a bit worried that the Morrison side see carrying on regardless as the least worst option. I completely understand that starting again is awful, and would take months and cost loads and all the stress would carry on. It's terrible.

But seriously just picking up on Monday as if nothing untoward has or is still happening doesn't seem ok either.

HildegardP · 15/11/2025 23:23

@moto748e Interesting point, must check the BBC NI version for the lulz, if nothing else.

BetaTwoAgony · 15/11/2025 23:24

The allegations of lack of professionalism for both DB and SD will have long lasting consequences I think.

They've operated in a cozy small world for too long and completely misunderstood the scrutiny their positions should and could come under.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 15/11/2025 23:25

Many thanks to the team of thread-starters, knowledgeable commentators and locals for their insight
I once accompanied several academic colleagues, including a real Professor, to a research launch event (in an admin capacity). I was handed a folder and name badge, both of which had my name prefixed by 'Professor'. Not having a brass neck, I quickly scored it out, while my colleagues laughed along. I clearly missed a trick or three!

SD may come to regret the If the claimant wants to put lipstick on this pig of an application quip.

I'm still shocked that a) he thought it an acceptable thing to say and b) he wasn't called out on it.
