About time!!

IOC likely to announce new policy early in new year after findings of a scientific review about the permanent physical advantages of being born male

The International Olympic Committee is set to announce a ban on transgender women in female competition early next year after a science-based review of evidence about permanent physical advantages of being born male.

The IOC’s guidance to Olympic sports has until now been that transgender women can compete with reduced testosterone levels but leaves it up to individual sports to decide. That is now set to change under its new president, Kirsty Coventry, who has promised to protect the female category.

The committee’s medical and scientific director, Dr Jane Thornton, last week presented to IOC members at a meeting in Lausanne the initial findings of a science-based review into the issues of transgender athletes and athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD) competing in female sport.

They finally arrived at sensible decision most 6 year olds would make.

Olympics to ban trans athletes from all women’s events

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/018864e60a8ef1fb

Even the Telegraph! No, trans athletes are not banned from women’s sports. Trans identified females who are not doping are welcome!

Still, the whole thing is a huge step back to where we all thought we were at the end of the last century - and yes, medals should definitely be stripped/re-awarded

The BBC is running a story saying a decision hasn't been reached yet.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/articles/cy4p29j4z70o

If it's the BBC it's probably lies.

whynotwhatknot · 10/11/2025 13:20

finally and lets hope they take the medals off those so calledwomen boxers too

theilltemperedmaggotintheheartofthelaw · 10/11/2025 13:22

I wonder how they will word the rule. Exclusion of all candidates who test positive for SRY gene, unless with a confirmed diagnosis of CAIS or Swyer Syndrome?

CustardySergeant · 10/11/2025 13:22

One comment under the article was
"I expect the BBC will be asking a drag queen on Woman's Hour what he thinks of this decision."

stickygotstuck · 10/11/2025 13:23

Finally. But unbelievable that it was ever in question.

Re. transmen, presumably they'd be banned from female competitions too, due to the elevated artificial testosterone they take. Essentially, they're doping.

SheinIsShite · 10/11/2025 13:24

Does this include people like that boxer and Semenya?

Westfacing · 10/11/2025 13:24

I hate to credit President Trump with anything positive but at the beginning of his taking office he said he would ban transwomen from competing in the LA Olympics - so I expect the IOC have had no choice, rather than they've seen sense!

I'm interested in this aspect too. I couldn't load OP's article, but does it mention how they are going to categorise people with DSDs? Are they going to issue a list of the various conditions and state which category they can compete in?

a science-based review of evidence about permanent physical advantages of being born male

Glad that’s been cleared up. Everyone must have been wondering why on earth we had male and female sports categories, what with there being no evidence for the physical differences before now.

🙄

Sorry Misla, I didn't mean to attach that to your post - slip of the fingers.

And happily, it looks like they're coming for Imane as well:

The new policy is also likely to cover DSD (differences of sex development) athletes — those who were raised as girls from birth but have male chromosomes and male levels of testosterone.

That follows the huge controversy at the boxing tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics when two boxers, Imane Khelif from Algeria and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting, won gold medals despite having been disqualified from the previous year’s World Championships for allegedly failing to meet gender eligibility criteria.

World Boxing, the new international boxing federation which has been recognised by the IOC since Paris, has now introduced mandatory sex testing and has said Khelif will not be able to compete in the female category until she undergoes the test.

I wonder why Imane doesn't want to take the test? It's a mystery 🤔

I hope that poor Italian woman gets an apology....

Holluschickie · 10/11/2025 13:26

Finally. They should take the medals back.
That poor Italian woman who was bludgeoned by Imane. And then the distasteful memes about " white women tears".
I am not white btw.

columnatedruinsdomino · 10/11/2025 13:27

Hopefully common sense will also be present in Glasgow next year for the Commonwealth Games.

spannasaurus · 10/11/2025 13:28

They won't take back medals previously given to men as that might inconveniently highlight just how many men have been allowed to compete in female events.

FuckOffMadison · 10/11/2025 13:28

Brilliant news! However this bit is a bit, ummm, 😬

Some work remains to be done to ensure the new policy is legally watertight.

Who are they expecting to contest it in court hmmmm? GLP maybe? 🤔

Dominoodles · 10/11/2025 13:29

mackerella · 10/11/2025 13:02

Aargh, I wish they wouldn't use headlines like this! It's not "trans athletes" who are being barred from women's events, but specifically transwomen (as the Times article reported correctly). Presumably trans men are still theoretically able to compete in women's events (although whether they would want to is another matter).

I'm not sure, could they? If you're a female taking male levels of testosterone surely that would be akin to doping. And a certain group of people would lose their minds if they had to stop their transition to play sports.

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 10/11/2025 13:29

SilenceInside · 10/11/2025 11:55

Bloody ridiculous that they needed a scientific review to figure this out....

Quite.

It doesn't say whether the press were officially briefed to this effect, but they then go on to discuss Khelif.

I'll be surprised if they ban CAIS.

Why do you want CAIS males included in women's events? It's been shown they have an advantage. Swyers women could/should be included unless evidence comes to light that they also have male advantage, but there is no excuse whatsoever for including a cohort of individuals who are known to be male and known to have an advantage.

ETA: I don't know enough about Swyers women to come to a firm conclusion, all I know is that the "male switch" doesn't operate.

ThatLemonBiscuit · 10/11/2025 13:32

Re Commonwealth games - is a ban there more likely to actually happen now?

Screamingabdabz · 10/11/2025 13:34

Hope they strip medals from all the cheats and retrospectively award apologies and medals to all the women who had it stolen from them. I’d want the ceremony, the flags and the national anthems playing too.
