Your Corbyn/Sultana Party - Discussion thread - Part 2

The YP starting conference is in the ACC in Liverpool between 29-30 November so only three weeks off. With competing factions involving Islamic conservatives, every variety of Marxist/Communist, former Labour members, trade union activists, entryists from SWP and SPEW, splitters from the Scottish Greens, trans activists and actual left wing feminists [not the nice kind] it is difficult to underplay how much controversy there is likely to be. So we will need a second thread in advance.

Thus far following the internal drama of the UKs newest left party has taken a whole thread. It has been a wild ride and the party still does not have a name.

This is the live feed by the way.

Sultana due to speak shortly? They've had all the 70s era boomer friendly trot hits on the meantime. Woody Guthrie, Bit of old reggae, Now Tom Robinson.

I like all those & I'm not a trot! 🤣 Though frankly that puts me off now..

Carla786 · 30/11/2025 16:08

Jezza should sing. After all,he was going to be in the panto, wasn't he?

SionnachRuadh · 30/11/2025 14:34

There's a lot of really mad stuff that didn't make it into the drama. Harold Wilson believed the South African secret service was trying to frame Thorpe, which might have just been Wilson's paranoia, or it might not.

And if you go on YouTube, you can still find the party political broadcast Thorpe did that was hosted by, of all people, Jimmy Savile.

What?? I need to watch this...BTW why did the poor dog get shot? Accident?

SionnachRuadh · 30/11/2025 16:14

But yeah, why has Zarah suddenly developed this tic of saying she wants to nationalise food production? Has someone told her that Pol Potism is really popular in the swing seats?

Chersfrozenface · 30/11/2025 16:16

But yeah, why has Zarah suddenly developed this tic of saying she wants to nationalise food production?

Isn't it in order to do away with food banks?

Surely nationalising food production will mean all food being distributed via food banks? Otherwise what's stopping rich people taking all the food?

TruckDiver · 30/11/2025 16:35

Maybe it's my fault for being slow to realise this, but I think she's just not very bright.

I don't say it would work. I'm just trying to follow her thought processes, such as they are. Thus...

People use food banks because food is too expensive due to profiteering producers, processors and distributors.

Nationalise food production > no more profiteering, no more food banks.

BlackForestCake · 30/11/2025 16:43

Why food? Why isn't she talking about public transport, water or housing, where there is a broad consensus that just leaving everything to the market isn't good enough?

TruckDiver · 30/11/2025 16:45

Because everyone else is already talking about those and there's already a consensus among YP members for nationalising them.

I’m guessing that some of the independent MPs and Jazza are already on to this hence her being frozen out. She certainly loves the sound of her own voice. If she had run for the Green leadership she’d have been in with a good chance of beating the hypnotist. At least she is a sitting MP.

SionnachRuadh · 30/11/2025 16:46

I can't see it being very compatible with London voters' cultlike devotion to fried chicken. Aren't there any YP members in Sarf London who can explain to her that you don't alienate Morley's customers?

Maybe she got stuck behind a tractor on the way to conference or she just hates Jeremy Clarkson?
I doubt it's anything deeper than that.

TruckDiver · 30/11/2025 16:48

So after months of trying to explain to people that the name was just a placeholder and it's not actually called Your Party...

It turns out it is. 😂

SionnachRuadh · 30/11/2025 16:53

Many years ago, the SWP print shop used to print Militant, along with Private Eye and sundry other papers. There used to be a bit of a competition to see who could get the most absurd reader's letter printed in Militant.

"Dear comrades, I used to be a Conservative voter, but last week I bought a saveloy and chips wrapped in a copy of Militant, and as I was eating my tasty supper on the way home, I read Peter Taaffe's column on "The British Crisis" and realised that the only way to save the country is to nationalise the top 200 monopolies. Please find enclosed a £5 postal order to help you keep up the good work."

I wonder if someone is pranking Zarah the same way.

Sultana has the intellect of a stick of celery if she thinks government bureaucrats should be running food production. Soviet style bread queues would be inevitable. Even Deng Xiaoping eventually realised it was a stupid idea.

What happened to the rumour that she asked The Greens if she could be leader before she left Labour?
I doubt she'll be an MP by the next election.

SionnachRuadh · 30/11/2025 18:24

Coventry South isn't a particularly good place for Omnicause leftism. It doesn't have a high concentration of either students or Muslims. And Zarah's popularity in the CLP can be measured by the fact that one (1) Coventry councillor defected to YP to support her.

If you wanted to run a left wing candidate there you would run Dave Nellist (ex Militant MP from the 1980s) because even if Dave is getting on a bit, he's a lovely man and people like him.

There's a persistent rumour that she's going to do the chicken run to Birmingham Ladywood and stand against Shabana Mahmood, which at least says she's brave.

Her main problem is that she's good at attracting the support of people who see her from a distance, but they all sort of fall away when they've experienced working with her. Say what you like about Corbyn, he has the huge advantage of being good at making friends. Zarah doesn't really do friends.

And whether or not she's even an MP by the time of the next election depends on what happens with all that money she's sitting on.

The ironic thing about this argument is that – notwithstanding the obvious huge issues in the UK food supply chain – the four big supermarkets have built a food distribution system which is very efficient and actually works pretty well the majority of the time. And it is based on planning by bureaucrats. Those bureaucrats are just employed by Tesco and Sainsbury's, not by the government.

You do not imagine, do you, that the manager of your local Tesco goes out every morning to try to source some lettuces at a decent price?

EasiestWayOut · 30/11/2025 18:34

As someone who is very left wing, this mess is disappointing.

BlackForestCake · 30/11/2025 18:37

I'm very very very very left wing and as well as being disappointed I'm startled that I'm now apparently to the right of someone who left the Labour Party five minutes ago.

Lalgarh · 30/11/2025 18:37

I guess the next stage is Committee elections?

MMBaranova · 30/11/2025 18:52

You misheard Corbs, it's actually Yo Party.

RainbowBagels · 30/11/2025 18:54

Wasnt the money to pay for the conference and the people trying v to put it together for free? So what is x she still doing with it? Is that how she imagines nationalised food will work? She takes all the food then redistributes it when she feels like it?
