Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A space for respectful dialogue about sex, gender and diversity

Tandora · 10/10/2025 11:16

This is a thread for posters who want to talk and share a diverse range of opinions about sex, gender, being gender non-conforming and/or trans, and public policy. It is to learn from each other; to engage in a productive exchange, and to hear different sides of the story.

It is not a space for bullying and insults. Please do not join if your intention is to control the conversation and undermine those who disagree with you.

So you are advocating all spaces to be mixed sex?

No.

There are two binaries I would like to dismantle here:

All (spaces) / No (spaces)

"Mixed sex" / "Single sex".

If we are going to accommodate diversity in society we need more nuanced and less binary thinking.

As there are only 2 sexes, we only need binary thinking when discussing single sex spaces.

@Taztoy

Ok. You win.

I am vile. I am disgusting. I am utterly abhorrent. I am disgusting. I am a liar.

I'm also stupid and ripe for mocking because of the things I say about trans people's "cognition".

You're the victim whose personal experience is to be centred.

I am the aggressor.

What are you trying to acheive with that post other than helping posted confirm that any suspicions of bad faith on your part that people may have had are likely to have some merit?

potpourree · 10/10/2025 16:44

What is the difference between a transwoman and a man?

Bloody good question.
I assume you don't want to tell us what you think the answer to that is? In terms that don't just repeat "woman"/"man" (because you haven't explained what you mean when you use those words).

spannasaurus · 10/10/2025 16:44

BloominNora · 10/10/2025 16:41

Yes - but he accepts that he is male and does not demand to be described as a female or claimed that the surgery or the hormones make it true nor has he demanded access to single sex spaces - unlike the others who claim that even a performative attempt of a bad wig and shit make up make them a woman!

He also wrote the guidelines to allow boys to use girls toilets and changing rooms in schools.

The fact that he acknowledges his sex doesn't change the fact that his actions have been harmful

No I don't think there is an essential conflict between the rights of women and girls and trans people. I believe that dismantling all forms of gender based control/ oppression/ hierarchy/ violence is necessary to dismantle patriarchy.

I believe that we can organise society in a way that accommodates a diversity of needs based on sex/gender.

And how does this work for those of us who don’t believe in gender ? If you want to dismantle gender based control (whatever that is ?) while upholding the concept of ‘gender’ then you are acting at cross purposes surely

Humans have two sexes. The rest is personality and individual tastes, (including sexual fetishes).

The chances of me clicking on anything labelled as 'sensitive content' posted by a TRA are zero.

puerile memes, the epitome of respectful dialogue.

Taztoy · 10/10/2025 16:46

I actually find the admission that @Tandora uses AI to write their posts really disturbing given that they claim to be an academic researcher.

Respectfully.

And even there, you couldn't even bring yourself to say an insincere, sarcastic, passive aggrressive bullying "sorry"

I think there was some debate over choice of toilets that DH avoided ...

Soontobe60 · 10/10/2025 16:48

Tandora · 10/10/2025 12:04

What I mean practically is that there may be some spaces that we say are for women (understood to refer to "birth sex"). There may be other spaces that we say can be used by either/ both women or trans women.

One of the things I find very difficult in this debate is the insistence by gender critical feminists that if women and trans women are in one space together then it is by definition a "mixed sex" space, that must be available to all (men). I understand the linguistic logic of this perspective, but it is totally dogmatic and binary thinking. It is also unreasonable as it completely fails to recognise that "trans women" (whether you believe they are a "subset of men" or not) still exist as a distinct category of people.

Edited

It’s a fact then when there are women and trans identifying males in the same space then that space is mixed sex and as such should be available to all men. There are myriad spaces where this is fine. Libraries, churches, football matches, theatres, buses, aeroplanes, Houses of Parliament - the list is endless. Trans identifying males are not a subset of men, they ARE men.

Are you going to have a word with this poster about the premise of your thread, as clearly laid out by you and in the OP, @Tandora?

CautiousLurker01 · 10/10/2025 16:49

JamieCannister · 10/10/2025 16:44

Plus it’s a deliberate misinterpretation - what Taz wrote was that what OP SAID/WROTE was vile and disgusting. That accusing Taz of weaponising her trauma was vile and disgusting… not that OP was either of those things.

It’s like the way we shouldn’t (and I don’t) tell children they are horrible, naughty, nasty - only that their behaviours were.

Taztoy · 10/10/2025 16:20

I’ve been really respectful. I’ve been polite. I’ve not been rude in any way.

I’ve had none of my questions answered.

as an aside, is not the mumsnet mods who decide what sits within and without guidelines on here? It’s not the posters themselves is it? So why would this thread be any different? Surely that would be a very bad idea for mumsnet to start to allow that?

You really have @taztoy and I witnessed you being bashed down by Tandora on another thread (was it yesterday?) for persisting in trying to get your question there answered. What struck me about their response was that it was that it seemed written in such a way as to make you feel like a pest, belittling in fact. I admire your perseverance in this "conversation".

potpourree · 10/10/2025 16:51

Taztoy · 10/10/2025 16:46

Let me say that in all my years around academic researchers, even the ones who live, breathe and embrace word salad don't actually write in this way.

OP is surely unique in this respect.

There's no "there" there.

BackToLurk · 10/10/2025 16:51

There can be no middle ground while one side is insisting on absolute compliance with the notion that ‘transwomen are women’

MistyGreenAndBlue · 10/10/2025 16:51

TheKeatingFive · 10/10/2025 14:06

This is something that I find extremely tricky to address, for a number of reasons.

Why?

Just one reason. S/He doesn't care.
