Waterside Arts Centre Sale clearly ignoring Supreme Court

SigrunGard · 05/10/2025 13:52

i was at the Waterside last night with my partner. The Women’s was marked “women’s” but then written on the door in large letters was something to the effect of please feel free to use whichever facilities” match your gender identity or gender expression “. Mentioned it to my partner who said the same was on the door to the men’s ( he said someone asked a friend what that meant and the reply was apparently” some modern bollocks” - hard to argue!)

I rather feel I should email them and point out that this is not right- anyone got suggestions for wording that doesn’t just make me sound bigoted!?

thanks

Glyndebourne went down this route. Guess what they did. Converted a ladies loos to unisex which doesn't meet the building regs - the cubicles are not enclosed and the washbasins are in the main area not the cubicles. They are disgusting - wet floors and water splashed around the handbasins. Given its a venue where women often wear long dresses and carry clutch bags it means that what they've actually done is given a whole extra loo to the men (who didn't have to queue in the first place). When I complained I got a whole load of waffle.

The venue I spoke of has created a male block of toilets, a female block of toilets, one single ocupancy 'gender neutral' toilet, as well as one single occupancy assessible toilet. It seems like a perfect solution. New build arts venue on a university campus. No fuss at all.

There you go - that’s how to show bigotry. By accusing everyone who refuses to join in the visceral hatred of trans people of being abusers.

People here are viscerally attached to the dignity of women, rather. Males are not female. Female dignity and privacy matters.

Perfect. Why can't they all do that? (And enforce it, of course).

What Is stopping you from following your suggestion on this then @sp ?

Keep up. Women crowdfunded the Supreme Court ruling and we will crowdfund to make sure it is complied with. As many court cases as it takes.

That's the correct configuration under the current building regs, well done them!

How are they policing who's using what?

It's pointless if anyone can go where they like.

So… are you getting the wheels in motion against this arts centre ?@GargoylesofBeelzebub

Redshoeblueshoe · 07/10/2025 21:08

It's easy to get the wheels in motion. Trafford council partly fund this, as a Trafford resident, I will email my local councillors. I don't think it is too much to expect public bodies to follow the law.

JanesLittleGirl · 07/10/2025 22:07

There are many ways that this can be progressed. One way would be to send a polite email to the centre to point out that the current signage is unlawful under EA2010 as confirmed by the SC and ask that they amend it. If they respond with a "fair cop guv. We'll amend the signage." then the story ends.

This is unlikely. A next step could be a complaint to the licencing authority (Trafford Borough Council). Licensing Authorities must perform their duties according to the four 'licensing objectives' contained in the Act. These are:

The prevention of crime and disorder.
Public safety.
The protection of children from harm.
The prevention of public nuisance.

Send a complaint to the Licencing Authority. The centre is almost certainly in breach of point 3 and may well be in breach of all four points. The Licencing Authority is duty bound to investigate and produce a report.

Any further steps would be dependant on the outcome of the Licencing report.

Not this one no. I have no standing here. My local area I will take action though. HTH

It's not pointless. Just like it's not pointless to put up signs telling drivers to slow down - it can't be policed 24/7, it mostly works on trust, but it's putting on record that if you're doing something wrong if you ignore the signs.

Most men used to respect women's spaces and as the saying goes 'The good men stay out so the bad men stand out', and maybe that respect can be restored in society. Clear signage that these toilets are for biological males and those toilets are for biological females puts it up to men to do the right thing.
Like those 'drive slowly' signs.

It's helpful to have the backing of the law.

Jallypally · 07/10/2025 10:10

No, I can’t think of any wording that won’t seem bigoted. If you’re a bigot, why not just “own it” instead of trying to think of ways of gaslighting people that you’re not one?

Gaslighting huh? Interesting word. Is that like when men try to convince us they’re women, when we know very well they’re not and never can be?

Jallypally · 07/10/2025 22:34

Portraying trans women as “abusive boundary pushing males” IS expressing hate for trans people as a class.

Jallypally · 07/10/2025 22:38

No, it’s when people pretend they’re concerned about women’s dignity/safety as a cover for expressing hatred of trans people. Which, to be fair, you don’t bother to try to do in your post.

Portraying trans women as “abusive boundary pushing males” IS expressing hate for trans people as a class.

Many men who identify as women may well have been misinformed regarding access to single sex spaces. However, the Supreme Court has now clarified the law and established that no male person has the right to access female only spaces. Any trans identifying man who now insists on using female only spaces will be displaying "abusive boundary pushing" behaviour and stating this fact is not hate.

‘Trans people’, or boundary pushing, lying, gaslighting men? If it were a hatred of trans people trans men (females) would be included wouldn’t they?

Nothing makes my eyes roll harder when it’s straight to ‘waahhh you hate all trans people’ when women just want single sex spaces. Have a day off.

I’m concerned about women’s dignity and safety because I am a woman, why would I need to pretend to be concerned about my own safety?

I would guess that most posters don’t hate trans people at all, we would like them to have happy and fulfilling lives, with equal opportunities for housing, employment and healthcare. I would simply like to eg be able to use a changing room without encountering a male in there, however he identifies. That’s not hatred, that’s something borne from my lived experience as a female. If that makes me a bigot or a transphobe then I will happily accept that label, I’ve been called worse so it’s water off a duck’s back, sticks and stones and all that.

I don't think it has required policing as far as I'm aware.

@Jallypally is your life a constant fight with women?

DuesToTheDirt · 07/10/2025 19:55

Perfect. Why can't they all do that? (And enforce it, of course).

When there is already an established 'alternative' facility the purpose of which is clear, it makes it easier to police.

Shortshriftandlethal · 08/10/2025 08:07

Jallypally · 07/10/2025 22:34

Portraying trans women as “abusive boundary pushing males” IS expressing hate for trans people as a class.

Any male person who knowingly intrudes into a designated space or facility that has been overtly designated as being for female people only is knowingly pushing and breaching boundaries. What do you call it if someone does this? Is that not an act of disrespect at least, and hatred at worst? the world does not revolve around the 'identity' of individuals and their desire for validation.

Having designated singles sex spaces is not hatred. We have them for a good reason. Thousands of years of experience tell us that female dignity and the privacy of sex is best served by having such categories.

Jallypally · 08/10/2025 08:13

No, it isn’t. I like to call out those who wage a campaign of hate against trans people. Particularly transphobes who gaslight others that they aren’t really doing what they’re doing.

I am fascinated by your day to day

is it constantly looking for women to argue with about trans rights?
