Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Bristol Council insists women be called ‘people with ovaries’

The comments were made in a 39-page response to a consultation by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on updates to its guidance, following the ruling that sex in equality laws refers to biological sex.

It wrote that “not all pregnant individuals would use the pronouns ‘she/her’” so it could lead to “emotional and psychological distress” for “trans men, non-binary, gender diverse or intersex individuals”.

“We strongly advise the use of more inclusive language such as using ‘they/them’ to refer to all individuals, or include other identities to reflect the diversity of individuals who access maternity or paternity services,” officials said.

“This could include ‘people with ovaries’ or the term ‘people who use paternity services’. We also recognise that individuals may not identify with the word maternity and prefer paternity as it is gender neutral.

“Additionally, it is unclear what support will be available to trans people who chest-feed to ensure they are protected from discrimination.”
Protections based on biological sex are “too vague”, the response added, as: “It is unclear whether it refers to anyone capable of pregnancy, or only those who were assigned female at birth.”

Council officials complained that the new guidance implies that “trans women are not ‘really’ women” and risked “creating a hostile environment in public services”.

Is Bristol now identifying as Brighton?

i was just about to say the same 🙈

I find this fascinating. My (otherwise lovely) raging TRA friend is adamant that "the TERFs" (aka GC people) will no lover categorise her as a woman as she has no ovaries/womb etc anymore. Apparently "they" (the TERFs) claim that's the defining thing.

Except the only time I've ever seen women referred to as "ovary/vagina/cervix havers" is when the TRAs are doing it!

Anyway. I'm sure my mum will be very confused to find out she isn't a woman. Mind you, she won't need maternity services anymore as she's in her 60s and had a full hysterectomy many many years ago.

Some people not assigned female at birth are capable of pregnancy?????

This was the bit that got me. What does this even mean?

If I was 20 years younger and using maternity services...I'd speak my mind .
I hope younger women of today have some balls

Because they are trying to be so progressive and open minded that their brains have fallen out.

Sometimes it’s more sinister than that though, isn’t it. Patriarchy. And all that.

Absentosaur · 23/09/2025 21:44

‘Cis’ - bollocks
‘Assigned at birth’ - bollocks
‘Trans woman’ - has bollocks

Bristol Council and Brighton Council - pair of bollocks

Out of curiosity, what did they name the men if women are people with ovaries?

Quite interesting isn't it? If men can't claim to be women, then women can't claim to be women either.

If women can't claim to be men then men.... oh well.

DisappearingGirl · 23/09/2025 21:49

It's beyond parody!

Another quote:
"The consultation response ... also took issue with a new definition of sexual orientation, which states that a lesbian woman or a gay man is someone attracted to someone of the same sex."

I think it means they don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.

NotNatacha · 23/09/2025 21:52

Q can also stand for Questioning.

A gay man I know through a mutual hobby asked me (not critically, I think he was interested in what people not in his circle understood by it) what I thought Q stood for. I said Queer, but I looked it up afterwards and found Questioning, too.

As someone who has given birth but now has no ovaries I’m presumably a non-person.

Theoturkeyistheonlyturkeyonmytable · 23/09/2025 21:55

Eh ..so Q is added on and could stand for Queer or Questioning ..
That's two completely different meanings
What happened to just LGB ..who decided T and Q was added

Theoturkeyistheonlyturkeyonmytable · 23/09/2025 21:56

I always thought Queer was an offensive word ...like meant old fashioned for Gay

They sound thick and uneducated if they don’t know what paternal means, God help the rest if the Council services

Abra1t · 23/09/2025 22:22

We had this on the Les Mills fitness FB group a few years ago.

The young Kiwi Les Mills media staff couldn’t see why the new menopause classes being directed at ‘people with ovaries’ was an issue. I was going to have mine removed along with my uterus for precancerous cells and I just couldn’t cope with the sanctimonious woke bullshit and cancelled my subscription when it expired.

KermitFeet · 23/09/2025 22:23

KilkennyCats · 23/09/2025 20:26

What the holy fuck are Paternity Services? Have they changed maternity to paternity?? 😱

Services to the patriarchy…

NotNatacha · 23/09/2025 22:29

It made sense to me that Q stood for Questioning, as I thought Queer meant Lesbian and Gay, and possibly Bisexual, so the extra word was redundant.

Meowzart · 23/09/2025 22:30

Taztoy · 23/09/2025 20:39

So. When I get my hysterectomy that’s looking increasingly likely, I’ll no longer be a woman?

Well thanks Bristol.

Well I’ve had a hysterectomy. But I gave birth to two children before that. So they can try and make out I’m a ‘They, them’ as much as they like. But going by the facts - that only women can give birth, I am 100% woman.

I don’t know if that balls comment was intentional or not but it made me laugh! 😂

YourJoyousDenimExpert · 23/09/2025 22:33

Bristol City council couldn’t run a bath and their local credibility is well into negative numbers now. Even if this article is genuine, nobody in Bristol will take any notice anyway!
