Obviously nobody should be facing an alarming rise in violence. But this seems a confusing survey.

Intersex people in Europe face ‘alarming’ rise in violence, EU finds

Increase in violence since 2019 is linked to online campaigns seeking to sow disinformation and fuel hatred

All of them identified as intersex, an umbrella term referring to those with innate variations of sex characteristics and which includes people who identify as trans, non-binary and gender diverse.

That's not what intersex means, and for an article moaning about disinformation...

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 19/09/2025 10:27

My pet hate, people claiming to be intersex. I read the title of the thread and thought you can't actually see a dsd normally when people are walking around. You definitely can't see my DH's so how can they be at increased risk of violence simply for having a dsd but obviously the special ones weren't special enough.

NotBadConsidering · 19/09/2025 10:29

What an absolute load of nonsense.

TempestTost · 19/09/2025 10:30

Wow, that article is just massively full of errors and confusing.

I'd say new low for the Guardian, but it probably isn't.

theilltemperedmaggotintheheartofthelaw · 19/09/2025 10:34

I suspect that the way this was done - relying on self-reporting, using the controversial term 'intersex', and conflating it with claims of being 'trans' or 'non-binary' - was ideologically motivated, rendering the results useless.

Not the Guardian's fault for once. The original report is just as bad.

timesublimelysilencesthewhys · 19/09/2025 10:34

It looking like a report which has allowed participants to self define intersex, violence, and medial and surgical treatment.

Nothing makes any sense.

AzurePanda · 19/09/2025 10:36

This article makes no sense whatsoever.

ScrollingLeaves · 19/09/2025 10:37

Please would you change the title? There is no such thing as “intersex”.

And what might seem approximate to that, - a difference of sexual development within the sex binary- has nothing to do with people wanting to be a different gender from the stereotypical [social] gender from the one associated with the sex they were born.

I will not even read the article if it is using false, misleading language of this kind.

It is the Guardian’s fault. If it only takes a few posters here to see how much of a nonsense this is, an editor worth their salt would also have significant concerns about an article on such a subject. They didn’t have to publish an article on it.

But they let the “journalist” write it and then ran it, because they have an editorial agenda to paint LGBTQIA+++ people as “the most oppressed” and facts be damned.

theilltemperedmaggotintheheartofthelaw · 19/09/2025 10:50

The Guardian are bad on science, and here they've uncritically summarised an EU report without editorialising. I searched for other msm coverage and there's nothing. Ideally a scientific publication should deconstruct it, but a lot of them are captured. Other msm could yet commission an analysis from someone with the right medical knowledge, but will they?

AnSolas · 19/09/2025 10:55

How would someone on a street or in regular life know someones medical history?
DV and interpersonal violence victim support may account for better reporting and the change in laws recognising abuse will hopefully lead to sccessful convictions

And its DSD so click bait article selling fake news

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 19/09/2025 10:57

DSDs are generally not visible when someone is fully clothed, and mostly not visible when they are butt naked either.

So how do all these violent thugs know this private medical information?

NotAtMyAge · 19/09/2025 11:00

You can't identify as intersex. You either have a DSD or you don't and that has nothing to do with whether you also believe you have a trans or NB identity. Sloppy investigation and sloppy journalism.

Kucinghitam · 19/09/2025 11:04

Galumping people in Europe face frumious rise in borogoves.

There. Fixed it with as much meaning as it deserves.

Apollo441 · 19/09/2025 11:07

It's just propaganda. Anyone with an ounce of sense can see straight through it. Sadly that is a minority of people. The 'be kind' brigade will lap it up.

Sorry - I put the title of the thread as per the title of the article, should have done in quotes.

Its obvious that a large subset of those questioned are trans, rather that having DSD. So why would "more than half, 57%, of respondents said they had been subjected “without their informed consent” to surgery or other medical treatment to modify their sex characteristics".

To make sense, all of those responding with DSD would have had to have had surgery or medical treatement as children. Or maybe had gender affirming care as children? I wouldnt be surprised if this is people claiming to have gone through the wrong puberty'.

I wonder whether a preponderance of respondents with genuine DSDs are older, and more likely to have been subjected to now out-of-date procedures. Which would make the results even more useless.

Nyungnyung · 19/09/2025 11:22

It’s all nonsense and it is very silly research that uses an online survey, that is only shared with LGBTQIA+ groups and no medical or patient groups (they are deliberately excluded). They then give the vaguest definition of ‘intersex’ that could apply to almost anyone in the world

It is one big funding grab - and their previous research is criticised here open.substack.com/pub/caisfiles/p/the-invention-of-intersex?r=2rwt19&utm_medium=ios

deadpan · 19/09/2025 11:30

I initially thought the same as some people on here but then realised that the ones identifying as trans or non binary will be intersex and as seems to be the case, stupidly, will have been told they're one sex when they are in reality the other. The same as Semenya or Kalif.
I think the Guardian haven't done themselves any favours using the word "identifying" and clarifying what is meant by intersex. There isn't enough coverage of DSD's which would help. They really should have written DSD and not intersex at all.
Basically I don't they mean people are identifying into being intersex, but that's what it sounds like.

Nyungnyung · 19/09/2025 11:31

It looks like most of their responses came from Grindr

Here is the original survey at the FRA website:

I cannot open the article nor copy any text from the page (two mobile browsers tested), so I cannot say anything about the survey.

It's worse when they slap the label on people who don't want it. I've been told that I'm 'intersex' because I have PCOS.

No, I'm a woman with a problem with her ovaries!

NotBadConsidering · 19/09/2025 12:05

From the full report:

40 % of lesbian intersex survey respondents are cisgender intersex women, while 37 % are non-binary and gender-diverse intersex and 18 % are trans intersex women;

So the findings of this study includes the answers provided by men who claim to be both lesbians and intersex.

Because as we all know this group is scrupulously honest in answering such surveys 🙄
