JKR accused of 'quoting hitler'

Dominoodles · 15/09/2025 22:38

Within the context of condemning political violence following the murder of Charlie Kirk, she quoted on X a line from Mein Kampf where Hitler talked about how he utilised political violence for his own gain. This was a clear statement in how allowing for political violence against one's rivals can lead to that in power manipulating things in order to harm others.

Unfortunately, articles are springing up across the internet shaming JKR for quoting or referring to this text at all, with many condemning her for 'nazi' views and accusing her of being far right.

(Personally I love JK, and it is such a shame that every single thing she says is twisted to mean the opposite of what she's actually saying!)

This is exactly what has happened with Charlie Kirk. People pick a few words out of a larger discussion and others accept it as "evidence" of something they want to believe anyway.. Too prepared to hate and no desire to do their due diligence.

While I agree with you in principle, I wouldn't put CK and JKR in the same category as examples of 'picking a few words out of a larger discussion' .

CK was a proud and outspoken conservative. There are plenty of direct quotes to show what he believed, and he openly and explicitly opposed many of the rights and freedoms other people hold dear. There's no need to pick out a few of his words and twist their meaning - he was very clear in his expression of his opinions.
He was entitled to his opinions, and it is despicable that he was murdered because of them.

However, JKR's brief reference to, and quotation of, Hitler were maliciously taken completely out of context, and it is obvious from everything else she has said, written and done that they do not in any way represent her actual beliefs and opinions.

YourLemonTiger · 16/09/2025 12:15

Selective quoting has been going on forever and is sadly a well known trick used by all political persuasions.

I'm old enough to remember this often still quoted 'gem' from the 1980s:

A comment from a Woman’s Own interview in 1987 is often repeated, but rarely in context: ”There is no such thing as society”. Its relevance was made explicit with the publication of the second volume of Margaret Thatcher’s autobiography in 1993:

they never quoted the rest. I went on to say: There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It’s our duty to look after ourselves and then to look after our neighbour. My meaning, clear at the time but subsequently distorted beyond recognition, was that society was not an abstraction, separate from the men and women who composed it, but a living structure of individuals, families, neighbours and voluntary associations.

Year or so ago she posted a selfie in her home. TRAs gleefully jumped on it and claimed walls showed a pattern of mould (it was almost certainly shadows or wallpaper, of course) and ever since claim her 'heinous bigotry' is the result of mould on the brain.

This is considered biting wit and devastating satire in TRAworld and is still oft-cited.

😂😂😂

So the TRA's think Billionairess JK Rowling has black mould in her home?

She doesn't live in a grotty bedsit above a takeaway. What the fuck is wrong with them all?

I know. Plus she makes sure it's in a selfie.

Frankly, I've no fucking idea how they manage to wield any kind of influence at all. Most people would just cross the street to avoid them

”The Witch Trials of JK Rowling” podcast goes into this in some detail. She was already seeing some interesting aspects of human behaviour in fan communities long before she took a stand against the misogynist sex denialism.

And given her interest in how the dark side of human nature can be harnessed to bring about totalitarianism, you can bet she was noticing the growing problem quite some time before she spoke up.

Yes, I was thinking about that podcast when I wrote my post, actually 😃

She's already been exposed to peoples extreme attitudes to her, both ends of the scale.

It's got to be weird. Adored beyond all reason on the one hand, and hated beyond all reason, on the other.

One of the interesting things about Kirk is just how good his trust rating are. In a world where politicians are not trusted this is extraordinary.

But then you look at all those deliberately edit in a way which makes it much worse than the context, it means that the trust is lost in the latter group and maybe even gained for Kirk because he is being honest in his views even if they are unpalatable.

Trust in authority is something that's central to the whole subject and we shouldn't be losing sight of this.

JKR has done a Holocaust minimisation by quoting Mein Kampf by Hitler just to tweet a basic moral comment that murder is wrong no matter how awful you may think a person’s opinions are.

This is categorically antisemitic.

Keep in mind, Mein Kampf (My Battle) isn’t wholly a memoir. The part she quoted, he wasn’t writing about how he used political violence for his own gain, he was writing his plan for success.- “'The very first essential for success is a perpetually constant and regular employment of violence."

Chillingly, Hitler defined success as a Germany rid of Jews (Judenrein), because he thought Jews were subhumans.

She has literally compared the murderer of a minor political activist to Hitler himself, and the plan for this murder to Hilter’s plan for the genocide of millions of Jewish people. Both plans ‘succeeded.’

I should not need to say that this is Holocaust minimisation and JKR should receive a lot of flak for this.

The memory of the Holocaust isn’t to be appropriated like that to shock jock a public controversy so you get those tons of views and upvotes on X (which can be monetised - not that she needs more money).

Yes JKR, murder is wrong. Try and post that without disrespecting the Holocaust. If you really feel a need to mention ‘fascism’ you can also do that without quoting Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf!!

I’m curious about this, Red. Trust ratings from whom? My kids regarded CK as little more than a typical tribal social media influencer. His Oxford Union debate (according to them) saw him pretty robustly and successfully challenged by Oxford students, but his socials are full of “Oxford students DESTROYED” type rhetoric - so what’s the story here? I have been very much under the impression he was an influencer playing to his gallery.

Out of interest, do you also scold the people who minimise the Holocaust by pretending that trans people were equally targeted by Hitler?

And given she wrote a blockbuster children’s book series on that very theme, it’s not surprising she’s researched it thoroughly.

The PP who quipped that many TRAs have memes instead of brains does have a serious point. Once you can get someone “learning”about history and politics through in-group memes, you can misinform them through over-simplification and repetition.

we need a goebbels quote here, i think.

“It would not be impossible to prove with sufficient repetition and a psychological understanding of the people concerned that a square is in fact a circle. They are mere words, and words can be moulded until they clothe ideas and disguise.”

TRAs and Memes spring to mind.

tbh i've always thought that the WO quote was a very good summing up of that whole paragraph she said came after.

In that, everyone must look out for themselves, if they're lucky they have family who can help. Because what she should have also added is: and if they fall through all the cracks, the government will provide a basic safety net.

So while, yes, they didn't give the whole quote. They absolutely gave the whole meaning.

i don't see that but yes. I don't have any truck with holocaust minimising.

I'm in Germany. It is very clear what people are up to when they do that. EVERYONE should be calling out holocaust minimisers. Its one reason i'm still on X. I retweet every post by the Auschwitz Memorial.

I think it's very familiar to anyone who has brought up (less than perfectly well behaved) teenagers.

My own daughter because she's 16 considers everything I say, think and do to be bad because she is 16, she needs to push back even when I'm trying to help her and, possibly most importantly, she has poor mental health starting with an eating disorder.

Sympathy, I have one of those too.

Only the most tangential link to this thread, but Keira Knightly as Dolores Umbridge? Seriously?? 😱

Yep, they never comment on the shit holes posted by genderists but continue to lie about JKR. They really have nothing.
