Gender incongruence in surgeon who amputated legs

'The case of double amputee surgeon Andrew Neil Hopper, who infected his own legs with dry ice so they could be amputated because he had a fetish for amputations has opened a window into a truly bizarre world of dark web pornography and weird sexual fantasies for cut-off limbs and "stumps that look so sexy".
At a sentencing hearing at Truro Crown Court today (Thursday September 4) it was heard how Hopper had throughout his life felt that he was in the wrong body and wanted to be a woman, but could not talk to anyone about it in the small rural village in Wales where he grew up.
The court was told how Hopper went to medical school where met his wife and future mother of his children and confided in her about his gender issues but never to his colleagues for fear he would be cast out out and left isolated. Neither did he confide to anyone about his body integrity disorder and the deep-rooted loathing he had for his legs and feet.'

I mean no one cares when they spoke out

Can it be a fetish AND an identity issue? Why would it be an identity issue when a man believes he is / should be female but not if he feels the same way about being an amputee? Do you really believe there is no connection between this man's negative / fetishistic feelings about one aspect of his body and the rest? How is dressing in your sister's clothes an identity? Does he think he is his sister? And was sexual identity for gender identity a typo, or just a good example of a Freudian slip?

Good questions. It could be both!

So he was too scared to tell people about his body dysmorphia when younger but not to scared to lop his legs off and then become national news?

the very thought of leg amputation gives him a hard on. I await the scandal of operating nurses saying they noticed but no one noticed.

who makes the call that a leg is non viable? I imagine the operating vascular gets a say. How many people are involved. How much weight does the surgeons opinion carry. I’m guessing he was pretty keen. I assume some one will review every single case?

I read an article to suggest that there was a full investigation of his clinical work, and no cases were highlighted as problematic and that this offence doesn’t throw his professional / clinical competence into question

And pretending you're a girl and having your penis cut off ... isn't fraud?

Completely agree! But the local news report focussed on the insurance fraud as the reason for going to prison

This is a stop the world level of wtf.

A severed limb fetish isn’t comparable to reading 50 Shades of Grey is it.

Yes, I think that's possibly the most absurd comparison I've ever read.

This man had both his legs amputated because of a fetish. Lots of women read some smutty fiction.

Where does one even start?

Surely it’s a fetish not an identity issue. The message sent along with pic of erect penis supports that!!

Its perfectly feasible that its both.

I'm curious where the dividing line is, and why the NHS will castrate men if they have 'gender incongruence ', but not BIDD.

I guess cutting off your own limbs isn’t technically a crime!!

There was a storyline on House where a young man wants treatment to address his sexual arousal at the sight of cows as he found it distressing.

House correctly identified the true source of the young man’s arousal distress by imagining what would be more shameful to admit to than fancying cows.

Why have we lost the understanding that perversion needs boundaries and controls, not indulgence?

very sad (for his family) reading this article about him from 2023, before the crime came to light.
How do such fetishes arise? And how can people be so desperate to gratify them that they’ll pursue such awful acts? What must his wife and children be feeling?!
And yes, parallels to TiMs very clearly despite the BBC not mentioning gender incongruence.

Fetishes cluster. However much you believe gender incongruence is a real condition, it would be dishonest to deny it is also used as a sanitising label by cross dressing fetishists. Lurkers please note, this does not imply that all people labelling themselves as transwomen are fetishists. We have ample evidence in their own self published words that some are.

I suspect that even for some men whose motivations for transition are not rooted in AGP or fetish eventually they too can come to fetishise 'womanhood' more generally, and certainly come to fetishise certain body parts.

I've mentioned, numerous times, the transition I've been witnessing over a number of years of a young man who clearly had dysphoric feelings around his genitals ( subsequently removed) and sought to transition to 'being a woman'.

These days he seems obsessed by his newly acquired breasts and they feature very prominently in every update photo he posts; at one point even referring to them as his " iconic tits". They are always out on display.

AMansAManForAllThat · 05/09/2025 08:52

Dolly Parton and possibly Madonna may have iconic tits. Or perhaps just ‘conic’ for Madonna.

The rest of us have breast tissue that is phenomenal for baby feeding, when everything is working well, but a massive inconvenience is sport, clothes fitting, and on occasion lying in bed at night. Miranda’s clapping was a delight.

And of course, “people” like this will never endure the true experience of having real breasts. E.g. that they can cause pain, ache, discharge, soreness etc.

These people really do fetishize womanhood without experiencing the true realities of being female. It’s the same with menstruation and menopause. Sorry a bit of a tangent!

Yeh, some women also can also make a fetish out of their body or body parts; and some can out drag a drag queen....just not quite so weird as when a man does it.

Where identities come from, what influences them, whether they can change - it's key territory for this board isn't it. BIID sounds like a kind of persistent intrusive thought or feeling. Those can be sexual or non sexual.

As thinking beings we also sometimes have the capacity to step outside our feelings and think 'yes I feel like I need to not eat, but rationally I know that's the anorexia speaking and i need to try to shift that thought pattern'.

Then there's the question of how community plays into it. Identity feelings seem to be closely connected to identifying into a community, or that can reinforce them. In a harmful way if it's a non reality based identity group. Thinking pro-ana groups, or this guy's fetish groups. There's also a group of actual amputees that he wants to identify into. I imagine he's quite offensive to them whether his intrusive thoughts are sexual or non sexual.

I'll stop rambling now.

Enough4me · 05/09/2025 09:29

He had a fetish about amputation and amputated limbs as his career but it's fine, nothing to see here as there's no evidence.
Just his former patients and their families stress and disgust knowing he got his kicks from their procedures. No harm though? 🤮

I would say that consultant vascular surgeon is the single most important person in making a call on whether amputation is necessary and the extent/nature of the operation although they will work with other members of the MDT. There have certainly been cases where bad surgeons have carried out 100s of inappropriate or poorly executed surgeries before being identified and stopped. Because they do, necessarily, have so much discretion as to what needs to be done and how. It's a bit like if you commission an artist to paint a mural. They're not just going to paint it, they have to design and plan it as well or it just wouldn't work.

Case(s) in point the breast surgeon in Birmingham, more recently the children's orthopaedic surgeon at GOSH.

Several of this surgeon's former patients are seeking case review so time will tell.

Reading that article is just awful. His poor family. The lengths that men driven by fetishes will go to really are extreme, and pretending that's not what's going on isn't going to help anyone.

Sado masochism is a paraphilia. Over 150 million copies of 50 Shades of Grey were sold and overwhelmingly read by women.

I bought and read those books, not because I'm into sado masochism but because I wanted to see if they were as hilariously bad as my friends said they were. As did, I suspect, approx 149.5 million of those 150 million.

WimbledonWhites · 05/09/2025 11:13

The last thing he remembers is deciding to have an early night after his wife and children went to visit family.

I was curious as to how he’d kept what he’d done to himself secret. It also sounds like amputation wasn’t the only option but he pushed for it. His poor family.

VERY valid points made!

It would be the same with paedophilia - they know it’s wrong, and they identify with others as part of a group or community and they commit the acts, or should I say crime!

Imagine this being your Dad though. Did he have no thought for the impact this would have on his family or children? The shame? The embarrassment? Absolutely selfish man!

Another thought I had was what’s the difference between a mental health issue and an identity disorder. Surely the two are interrelated?!
