Patients sue noted former Mass. General surgeon over gender surgeries they say he botched

A Gender affirming surgeon is being sued in the US.

"Surgeon Curtis Cetrulo became a leading light of a cutting-edge program at Massachusetts General Hospital soon after it opened in 2018, crafting penises for transgender men — and helping plant a flag in Boston amid intensifying national competition for such procedures.
By then, Cetrulo was already well known in plastic surgery circles. He had led a Mass. General team two years earlier that completed the country’s first successful transplant of a penis, involving a 64-year-old man who had lost his penis to cancer.
For transgender patients, the surgeries he offered included a procedure called abdominal phalloplasty — using skin grafts from the abdomen to form a penis.
But now, two of his former patients are suing Cetrulo and Mass. General for medical malpractice, alleging the gender-reassignment operations he performed were experimental and unsupported by medical research. The lawsuits said he used an untested approach to abdominal phalloplasty that caused them severe pain, disfigurement, infections, and other complications — and led to even more surgery to correct the mistakes.
The patients also allege that Cetrulo did not adequately inform them of the risks of his approach."

Stop infantilising trans men. They're fully capable of making informed decisions about what surgery they do and don't want. His body, his choice. If you don't want phalloplasty, guess what! You don't ever have to get it. These men have dysphoria and getting phalloplasty helps relieve it. Getting the reverse helped me feel so much more at home in my body, it's the same for those men.

They know the risks, leave them to make their own decisions.

'They know the risks, leave them to make their own decisions.'

'The patients also allege that Cetrulo did not adequately inform them of the risks of his approach.'

I think that anyone reading the second quote (about the legal action) can see that the first quote is incorrect.

Adults are fully entitled to have whatever cosmetic surgery they can personally afford to pay for. As long as the taxpayer is not funding it except for medically necessary surgery. The history of adults seeking compensation from medics for inadequate botched surgery suggests the courts take a dim view of medics offering poor quality surgery.

Young people gaslit into believing that their bodies are wrong but brutal experimental surgery plus toxic drugs should be safeguarded from the dangerous adults selling them these falsehoods.

You call it infantilising - society calls it protecting the young, mentally vulnerable.

In the UK, if that surgery is provided on the NHS and it ends up creating a lifelong problem with incontinence and likely, an increased need for the psychiatric treatment they really needed in the first place, then I and others are paying for it.

Our NHS cannot cope with cancer patients and others who will die as a direct result of their illness. Providing women with surgery which has no physically useful improvement to their health and, indeed, is likely to be extremely detrimental, really needs to be carefully assessed, like all other treatments, for its cost/benefit ratio.

Realistically, it will fail as the failure rates are so high and the unintended consequences so extreme and consistent that it really is a no brainer.

Add on the fact that so-called “gender dysphoria” in women is an entirely invented concept and we really have the perfect storm of “Physician, do harm.”

Yes, I’m sure every girl who hates her growing body because it makes her a target for male sexual aggression will be much happier once her breasts are amputated, her internal organs rotting through use of wrong-sex hormones and she’s suffering from incontinence.

Just like those little boys who think they’ll be able to give birth. And those adult men who think women let them use women-only facilities because they think the man is a woman. Those of us who stay silent do it because we don’t dare risk your violent response when we challenge you.

I don’t give a damn about adult male fantasists. But the children and teenagers letting adults harm them in pursuit of a delusion — that breaks my heart.

gruit · 10/02/2026 13:40

I always think that transwomen who are truly settled and content in themselves wouldn’t need to go on to a feminism forum where the vast majority of posters are female and critical of the concept of gender, to berate women.

HooverIsAlwaysBroken · 10/02/2026 13:41

I love the recommendation to the FWR posters to stop their mummy makeovers, Botox, shape wear, surgeries and makeup…. That should be its own thread 😂

borntobequiet · 10/02/2026 08:17

Absolutely. I also noticed

Doctors eventually had to remove “a severely deformed, scarred and nonfunctional structure that was intended to serve as phallus,” the suit alleges.

In what way was this appendage ever going to be “functional”, other than to allow urination standing up?

It's just a more extreme version of snake oil.

It doesn't have the capability of an erection. It's my understanding if you want it erect, you can either have a saline solution put in the pretend testicles that you have to pump, to make the penis go erect. Or you have a metal rod in it permanently, so it's permanently erect (or a different one to make it semi erect, depending on your preference).

And the rate of complication is something like 95%.

An absolute Frankenstein fantasy.

Of course, most actual men don't give a monkeys, but if they did, I'm sure they would say that the definition of a man is not a woman who has to pump fake testicles up to get an erection, or have a permanent bit of metal in a sewn on piece of arm skin.

I mean, even writing it down is pretty ghastly.

"Brutal Surgery" - Almost every surgery looks brutal. This isn't cosmetic either, it's a medically necessary elective surgery to alleviate Dysphoria.

Also HRT isn't toxic, it's lifesaving medication. Hence why we get it on the NHS.

This isn't a feminist forum. It's an anti-trans forum. I think we have a right to defend ourselves.

On the contrary - this is a feminist forum for "sex and gender discussions, feminist chat, theory and intersectional feminism" There's a specific focus on the safety of women and safeguarding children.
If you bothered listening to women, we'd tell you.

Girls and women don't get phalloplasty, men do. Trans men who need it to alleviate dysphoria. Also what are you talking about? Hormones don't make your internal organs rot. This is why doctors manage this stuff not obsessed weirdos online.

Violent, ha! You think I'm violent just for being transsexual? I'm weaker than almost everyone I know. I'm far more worried about you lot trying to hurt a trans person as we want to just get on with our lives while you're obsessed over hatred.

I transitioned as a minor, does that scare you? I knew who I was from a young age and so did so many other trans men and women. You aren't trans, so leave us the fuck alone and stop trying to strip our healthcare from us.

I'll take a leaf out of your book on this one, "You can't just identify as something you aren't. You're not feminists and can't just identify as such."

Well, you might want to pass along the memo to tell your fellow cohorts not to threaten women with death, rape, being burnt in a fire and the loss of their livelihood, and children.

It's rather awkward when all the threats are coming from one side, isn't it.

And while you're about it, please stay out of women's spaces. You will be breaching the equality act and as it's unlawful, women have have recourse to the courts

We've heard it all before. We know why trans kids have to keep being re-animated as a concept.

Fortunately, the world is waking up to the horrendous risks and dangers. So that avenue of ret-conning validation will soon be shut completely.

I don't align myself with the modern 'transgender' movement thats turned my medical condition into some fun identity. They're not my cohort, most of them aren't even real transsexuals.

Also the threats are coming from both sides.

I'm gonna keep using women's spaces, I'm stealth so no one will know anyway. They're my spaces too.

You can try and remove us from society but dysphoria is real. You can't get rid of us, we'll keep coming back. The young are far more supportive as we've grown up with trans people and know we're not the boogeyman the media make us out to be.

You're not, we can spot you a mile off. Women are just scared of confronting strange men in what should be women's spaces because you'll probably turn violent.
