I’m concerned that M&S were re-stocking returned bras as he claimed he was doing. Surely returned items don’t go back out on the shop floor?

I'm sure they used to.

In the days when returned items could go to any till you'd see the assistants hanging them on a rail behind the till and another assistant working through the rail, putting them straight out again.

Why do you think they don't?

Most returns likely will be change of mind rather than faulty. So they should only be taken back if they are in resaleable condition.

I sometimes use the returns policy do a mass "personal" shop of "everything" for family who is flying in for a short week-end visit and then return what is not picked so some are only looked at.🤷‍♀️

There was a time in the 90s?/00s? M&S once had a no-quibble returns policy and some used it as free shop-wear-return service 😬 and the brand image dipped but they fortunatly changed the policy

I'd quite like a comparison with other clothing and shoe threads. A bar chart would be nice. I'm guessing not many on socks but who knows.

Surely “a bra chart”

If the m&s screed is real it just demonstrates how weirdly even supportive places treat tw. He doesn't feel the slightest bit patronised? No actual female colleague would be treated like that.

It reflects how they think of women. If they have always patronised women, they will assume being patronised is an indication that they are seen as women.

How many times have the written posts saying they hate being treated a certain way, but also thing of it as passing?

I'm so old ☺ that I remember when there was no time limit on M&S returns.
There were also no fitting rooms in the shops.

BeLemonNow · 20/08/2025 14:54

Very funny @EsmeWeatherwaxHatpin .

Fom what I remember from working at M&S Lingerie "returns" also meant items that had been left elsewhere in store.

You know, people change their mind before buying and leave it randomly somewhere or change their mind at the till.

Male staff members used to drop them off and scarper. The Menswear department (on the floor above) used to draw lots!

Not sure this has been posted elsewhere but it seems that the Reddit mods were suspicious about the "employee's" post and it was taken down although seems to be back up now.

New M & S bra fitting policy
Christinapple · 20/08/2025 15:09

In the recent incident the women (who was considered trans because she was tall, we don't know for certain) simply asked if the customer needed any general assistance. She didn't say "I personally will help you fit your bra" did she?

No man should approach a teenager they don't know. Especially in a lingerie department when they aren't supposed to be there. What is wrong with you?

BeLemonNow · 20/08/2025 15:27

If the Reddit post is genuine, it was a transwomen, aka a biological male expressing their gender as female.

According to possibly them and aligned with media reporting they approached a teen girl looking at bras and said "Hi, can I help at all?’.

The teen in particular felt very uncomfortable. They left, and their mum complained to M&S that this was inappropriate.

Having worked there I agree, and don't recall any biological men approaching women for help with bras. Many will be uncomfortable.

Unfortunately many on TRA have claimed that there's no evidence this person was "trans" and that they might have just been tall.

This "not transism" is a common tactic to claim it will be i.e. butch lesbians who will be disadvantaged by any spaces or practices based on biological sex.

What are you saying? That it isnt an issue because a man (or man identifying as a woman) would never approach a girl in the bra department? Because everyone knows that is wrong?

Or are you using a girls distress to claim that trans identifying men look like tall women?

RTFT. Are you saying you don’t believe the account on Reddit?

He is male.

He went up to a 14 year old girl and offered his assistance in the purchase of underwear.

She did not know him.

Now if you cant work out what the problem is with a male member of staff putting himself in danger you should write to M&S and ask them to explain what issues could from that offer of assistance.

Totally off topic but I have a hazy recall of a documentary about M&S way back. It featured staff opening mailed-in returns, with complaint letters, and one was a bra that had been worn for 6 months but returned as it didn't meet expectations. 😂

There was a time when they had no changing rooms, but I can't remember how far back that was. You can't really refuse returns in a clothes shop with no changing rooms.
