@UnpaintedLily now THAT's a memoir I would read!

cigarsmokingwoman · 15/08/2025 19:25

interesting that JKR's review has upset some yes supporters who are still in denial about how they behaved during the referendum.

I had my then 6 year old screaming whilst our car, stopped at a red light, was suddenly surrounded by people pushing yes leaflets through the window.

Feeling like our flag wasn't really our flag and the assumption that everyone felt the same way as them.

The frustrating ignorance then, and even now, of the English about just what Nicola was really like. They can fucking have her, and find out.

JK was absolultely spot on.

'The English' are not a monolith, of course.

I actually really love how JKR managed to use the work of Stephenie Meyer to describe NS, but without dragging down Stephenie Meyer as an author.

It was pretty much the opposite. Stephenie Meyer writes teenage fantasies so well, and NS believes in such outrages fantasies it goes so well.

actually she does say that pretty much the same thing happens in each book, which is more or less true, and she clearly doesn't rate Bella as a character.

'The English' are not a monolith, of course.

That is easily shown: just as the Scots are divided by whether they voted stay or leave in 2014 (44.70% leave, 55.30% stay), so the English are divided by whether they voted stay or leave in 2016 (51.89% leave, 48.11% stay) with the complication that this latter figure includes Scots. But the English are still at odds among themselves about that one, in quite a big way, so not a monolith at all.

That's true but I didn't read it as bringing down an author, just that what SM did, worked. It is a repetitive fantasy that has a devoted and captured audience, much like trans activism. Except SM knows her writings are fictional, but NS can't see that trans activism is a delusional fantasy.

Plenty of us English had the measure of Wee Nippy a long time ago. And we definitely don't fucking want her, ta!

Wales doesn't want her either, we got a whole Senedd full of batshiters of our own.

I want another 12 feet on top of Offa's Dyke stat, and blow up those damn bridges if you have too. She MUST not get in. 😤

SinnerBoy · 16/08/2025 07:49

Thanks for that, Toots. It was an enjoyable read, JKR neither wastes, nor minces words, does she? I particularly like her comparison of Sturgeon to Trump. They are both utterly assured of their own rectitude, refuse to answer knotty questions and surround themselves with sycophants.

Trump thunders and blisters, Sturgeon huffs, sighs and FFS-s.

They are also both in positions of power where they don't have to take full responsibility - Trump can blame the states and Sturgeon can blame Westminster.

I have to say, as a linguist, that t-shirt is just wrong, It's not 'ni - kou - luh' but 'ni - kuh - luh'. Sorry for the lack of IPA, I can't be bothered to write it out and photograph it, but you'll get my point. I guess NS would also pronounce the 'r' in Sturgeon, but then many people wouldn't, including me.

As for Sturgeon on Isla the fragrant Bryson: ""Worst of all, I sounded like I didn't have the courage to stand behind the logical conclusion of the self-identification system we had just legislated for," she writes." So what does or did she really think? It's still not clear to me, and from comments I've seen she doesn't seem clear herself. But yes, it is absolutely a "logical conclusion" that one day she'd have to call a rapist female, and it's telling that she didn't follow through with it.

I think it shows she is a failure as a politician and a leader.

A good leader knows that there are negative consequences to any decision, but that their job is to make a choice and face those consequences. A bad leader fudges and hides.

Fundamentally, she hid under the shadow of Westminster, using the UK as both a shield and a focus for discontent. Never mind Scotland. Sturgeon was dependant on Westminster.

BBC piece on JKR’s review here

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd6n78z1d34o

I see they managed to include the bit where JKR merely wearing a t shirt with NS’s name on upped NS’s anxiety about her personal safety to panic level (despite her personal security team) but left out the part where JKR itemised some of the abuse she and her family had endured over many years involving threats so real JKR had to request police intervention.

Not biased at all.

Wow JK, brilliant as always!Flowers

I did struggle reading the excerpts from Nicola's book; 'star attraction','Midas touch’, 'massive electoral asset.’ Seriously?!

It must be awkward trying to strut around with your head shoved quite so far up your own bottom.

Aye if they aren't in conflict how did she conclude Isla Bryson was neither male nor female but "well a rapist"

I'd love to see her share a SSS with Isla or Beth.
