Beautifully written and excoriating. Brava JKR.

thebigyearahead · 14/08/2025 23:49

JKR. Brilliant mind ❤️

myfitbitisfucked · 15/08/2025 00:13

I have been so looking forward to this. I knew JKR would not disappoint. There is a seam of rich material that rivals Ukraine’s mineral sources so she was going to be in her element.

Would be tempted to say that on some level Dolores Umbridge would have been well played by Sturgeon but the character’s propensity for lauding pure breeds might have caused some consternation with the trans shite for our wee Krankee.

GallantKumquat · 15/08/2025 00:22

I think the most astute observation is that Sturgeon failed at the thing that she was most confident in - that she was a superior politician.

"Like vampires who attempt to blend in undetectably with regular humans, successful politicians must understand the public mood, if only to mimic or manipulate it. Neither group can afford to slip out of touch with the real-life concerns of normal people. The lifeblood of politics is connection, feigned or sincere. You have to understand, or pretend to, the hopes and fears animating the populace you’re supposed to be serving."

That is precisely what happened to Sturgeon. One doubts her commitment to the trans cause - instead she'd made a catastrophic miscalculation and her greatest asset, her self-absurdness, turned to hubris and became here nemesis.

Self-absurdness is a fabulous word, Gallant :)

I have said this for years that I can't understand why she is considered a great politicians. I have never seen it. She won elections but then anyone who led the SNP during this time would have won these elections given that the unionist vote splits between several parties and roughly one third of the electorate will vote for the SNP candidates no matter what.

Datun · 15/08/2025 08:06

That was a very enjoyable read. JKR is fuming with Sturgeon. And so disappointed it would seem.

It's really difficult to believe how anyone can consider themselves a great leader, or a good politician if they openly admit they're frightened of pissing off a handful of cross-dressing men.

Leadership it absolutely isn't.

CassOle · 15/08/2025 08:16

OK, so Sturgeon's book is not worth reading. However, is Twilight worth reading?

She's not alone in her fear of pissing off a handful of cross-dressing men.

Why are so many politicians so scared of them? (Not really a question for this particular thread, but I'm constantly baffled as to why so many people have been convinced that transvestites are the most marginalised and vulnerable people ever to exist and that we should all pander to them and do their bidding.)

Lovelyview · 15/08/2025 08:41

I do feel honoured to witness genius in real time.

GrandmaMazur · 15/08/2025 08:50

She really is a great wordsmith isn’t she? I am so looking forward to reading the new Strike book. I think it’s due in September.

PestoHoliday · 15/08/2025 08:55

Sturgeon is going to need a crate of aloe vera after that.

Needspaceforlego · 15/08/2025 09:09

Thank-you JKR.
Now I need to go and try to read Twilight again. I'm never a book reader, HP = half the books I've read as an adult.

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2025 09:10

Nicola Sturgeon. A woman with a god complex who sucked the blood out of feminism to prove her useful to males whilst virtue signal how pure and progressive she is to try and secure a legacy she clearly feels should be on a par with Obama.

Oh and she like kilts.

Yes, I was going to add to my post that she's not alone in that.

But it's the claim she's a great leader at the same time bit, that gets me.

Well if this is a dual review, yes if you are 17, naive and still a bit vacuous.

JK is clearly Team Edward. Poor Jacob didn’t even get a mention.

I’d bet more people read her review than read Nicola’s book.

The thing that makes me chuckle is that JKRowling will probably be able to find out this information!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 15/08/2025 09:21

I didn’t know Jo’s husband used to run a methadone clinic.

One is featured heavily in The Casual Vacancy, which I’ve just read for the second time.
He must have offered some expert opinion.

She did have a teenage daughter at the material time!

CompleteGinasaur · 15/08/2025 09:26

Bloody devastating from beginning to end. One of the things I loved about it is she didn't even elaborate on the good/bad vampire metaphor, but just planted it and left it to the reader - "We're good vampires, us. Don't eat people at all. Perfectly safe to be left alone with your teenage virgins in floaty nighties. We're so special and absolutely trustworthy. Nothing at all like those O.G. bad vampires, so when they turn up and start tearing people's throats out because you told the werewolves to leave us alone and they snuck in under cover of being special too.. oh. Sorry, but nothing to do with us. We're special."

INeedAPensieve · 15/08/2025 09:27

Wings over Scotland has posted a slightly cryptic message about her review on X, I'm not on X but I can see the main post (just not the replies or context), does anyone know what he means?

I've posted a screenshot image of it, will hopefully show up in a minute.

JK’s review of sturgeon’s shite book

Perhaps the issue of Scottish independence, and sides taken during the referendum back in (!) 2014?

INeedAPensieve · 15/08/2025 09:40

Ah of course @TheAutumnCrow that makes sense. I was reading too much into it and thought it was another in fight like what's happening with the guy who did the Ai notes of the NHS Fife case. Of course it means the referendum stuff. Need more coffee this morning! 😅

DabOfPistachio · 15/08/2025 09:49

When your belief in your cause is so deeply rooted that there is literally no evidence that could shake it, it has become religious, and opposition will inevitably come to be seen, not as rational disagreement, but as a fundamental moral failing.

This was the line that stood out for me, not just for Sturgeon but because it explains trans activists behaviour so perfectly

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 15/08/2025 09:54

I actually really love how JKR managed to use the work of Stephenie Meyer to describe NS, but without dragging down Stephenie Meyer as an author.

It was pretty much the opposite. Stephenie Meyer writes teenage fantasies so well, and NS believes in such outrages fantasies it goes so well.
