In the Guardian
Another man who doesn't seem to think that women get to choose!
I don't suppose he has similar scruples about "uglyism" or even ageism.

Just looked it up and Rod Stewart is 5 ft 10! This is what I mean.

I doubt that he is still that height at 80. But yes he loves a tall woman and they seem to love him.

“It’s because I’m short, isn’t it?”

No, Tony, it’s because you’re a tiresome, creepy, bloviating twat.

Edited

I have learned an excellent new word today! Bloviating 😀
thankyou

I'm 5'9. I don't know whether I just live in a place full of short men, or what, but I've always been taller than most men and it definitely made it harder to pull. Men might like to look at tall women, but they don't necessarily want to go out with one. Especially if she's 6ft in heels. Most of the men over my life have been between 5'11-6ft. I'd consider 5'10 short for a man, so sadly, there are few celebrity men i can accept.

What I don't think is fair, is tiny women getting very tall men. If you're short, you've got loads of choice. There should be a rule- no more than 3 inches taller than your base height, so everyone gets one of an appropriate height difference. 😁

I'm 5'2" and at uni I dated a guy who was 6'2" - I had to end things as my neck was so sore all the time.

Mick Jagger is tiny. It hasn't hurt him.

Mick Jagger IS tiny. I saw him on stage at Wembley Stadium and he was about half an inch high and yet look at Bianca and Jerry - stunnas!

Denimrules · 08/08/2025 10:01

Growing up tall I found it embarrasing at times and began to draw into a stoop in my early teens. My much older brother insisted on pulling me up on this and getting me to stand up straight. I'm grateful for him doing this. My moniker - as I'm taller than bro - became 'My not so little, little sister'.

Sizeism isn't good whichever way it goes. My family has had 5ft 6 men and 6ft 4 men. Bro was short and bald but no failure in the dating game.

zanahoria · 08/08/2025 10:04

“But you look at Love Island"

Love Island is a dating show, Tony, one that unashamedly celebrates young and beautiful people. Most people watch for it a bit of fun, maybe a bit of fantasy as they are never going to be swanning around a swimming pool surrounded by attractive people who are attracted to them.

Any seventy eight year old watching it complaining that it is not fair that that the contestants would not fancy him for whatever reason has got serious problems.

I've met him.
He's a complete knob-head.

I've heard that too.

Kumquatzest · 08/08/2025 10:08

I think height prejudice is real. But at the same time, he is naive if he thinks short men are the only ones who get mocked or considered undesirable. Maybe it's just the only prejudice he notices. Lots of men are happy to say horrible things about promiscuous women or women who aren't conventionally attractive.

DiscoBob · 08/08/2025 10:10

I heard once this young female journalist went to interview him. The interview went fairly normal, until the end when he said 'right, are we going to have sex now?' with a deadpan expression. He was definitely serious.

Creep.

I once met someone who had worked with him on one his historical type programmes. Apparently, he is very unpleasant and a complete diva.

I was sat at the next table to him in a restaurant. I would concur.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/08/2025 10:25

I'd happily date a dwarf if he was a lovely person fit to be a life partner. But the men I've dated are so picky they all think they can date models or little compliant phillipino women rather than a strong minded professional woman like me when they themselves are repugnant morons with nothing to offer. Where are all the decent men for 60 year olds? There aren't any.

Violetparis · 08/08/2025 10:26

He is right in that superficially being a tall man is seen as more attractive than a short man, same as a slim woman is seen as more attractive than a fat woman. In reality though there is more nuance as in a relationship, personality, character and other physical preferences come into it.

user2848502016 · 08/08/2025 10:35

Urgh he sounds awful, have gone right off him.

Yeah he’s right that women shouldn’t fixate on height or reject men only because of height.
However it’s also ok to have preferences and tall women friends I’ve had have all said lots of men don’t want to date them because they want a woman who’s shorter than them, so it works both ways.

My preference is definitely for taller men and I can’t help that, but as I’m only 5’4” I’ve only ever met a handful of men who were shorter than me, and I wouldn’t reject a man who was shorter than average if I liked everything else about him.
All shorter than average men I know are all married or in relationships too so it can’t be that much of a barrier if you’re a nice guy!

NewBlueNoteBook · 08/08/2025 08:55

He’s using Love Island contestants as a representative bunch of people? 😆😆😆😆

Or is he just upset that the women in Love Island wouldn’t date him?

Going on his track record, he'd probably find them all hideously too old for him!!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 08/08/2025 10:39

@YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt I’m the same height as you and also went out with a 6’2” man. Didn’t like it at all. Neck ache and having to raise my arm to hold his hand made me feel like I was toddler size 😕

I do prefer short men though and my DH is 5’6” which is perfect for me. His brother is only about 5’2” and honestly that would be a no for me. His wife is several inches taller than him.

You are lucky he did not ask you budge up

During his appearance on the show he also revealed how they met, telling the Loose ladies: “I was filming in the centre of London, it was a lunch time in Spitalfields and I went in to get a place and there was only one extra place on a table for two.

“And there was this stunning woman and because I am on the telly I thought it would be OK to go up to the maître d and asked ‘would you mind asking that woman if I could share that table with her because there’s nowhere else to sit’.

I’m 6ft 1 and can attest that very few men want to date a woman taller than them. So I’m not quite sure what these short men are complaining about. I think they are upset that women shorter than them or their same height prefer tall men. Oh well. They wouldn’t date me so I am unsympathetic!

Without having to defend him as a person, he makes a reasonable point here. I know teenage boys who look at insane advice on YouTube about how to increase your height because they are so worried about this. It's often presented as a reasonable 'requirement' in a way that would be called out as wrong if it were about women's weight, height, or similar.

That messaging is coming from men though. Same as all the YouTube videos about "bulking" in the gym. They present it as being something that women are demanding but really it's the content creators, telling their audience what they need to look like, in order that they can sell them stuff.

NaughtyTortieOwner00 · 08/08/2025 10:47

Height is an issue for some - IL can't shut up about it - and MIL goes on about foot size as well women should have tiny feet (neither my girls nor I do).

DH isn't tall more my height 5ft 6 - DS is my height - one DD same other a lot taller.

Dmum had an issue with bald men - I don't DH lost his hair very young.

So in my family it's 50:50 very tall and short people male and female - and 50/50 on hair loss.

I suspect this is something Tony Robinson personally feel counted against him - but appearances do attract comments and judgements - and a few people can't see beyond appearances.

GiantTeddyIsTired · 08/08/2025 10:49

I'm 5'. Had boyfriends the whole gamut from a couple inches taller to a lot taller.

Have one son taking after his dad (6'1" - sorry! But TBF, he's an ex, so no great loss to taller women), and one taking after me, so I kinda have a stake in this fight.

Personality overrides physical attributes the vast VAST majority of the time for actual relationships.

Someone being a jerk ruins a tall handsome man (or a short, ugly one) much quicker than the other way around.

Deadringer · 08/08/2025 10:50

So many men wanting to only date young , slim, very attractive women, and crying because young, slim, very attractive women like tall men. Boo hoo.

I saw a you tuber looking at this - as some minor celeb in US had posted before and after pics of extensive gym work with poll and many on-line women prefered the first pic and so many on-line men were calling them liars.

He looked at research out there and some quick interviews- and conclusion was women look at the OTT gym bodies and factor in time and prioties and it can count against the men - he also suggested men had own ideals about how men "should" look and they were assuming women's were same as research showed women have different prioties.

According to Google both Rod & Mick are 5'10" which is taller than the UK male average of 5'9". If you want a short arse lead singer of that generation I give you Roger Daltrey at 5'7".

I am guessing that means they were 5'10" fifty years ago
