On the road again for more rather sad events.

However, we stopped for a cuppa and loo break at a countryside cafe with appropriate decor. So for the tractor fans...

Afternoon friends - A pint of chilled cider please bar-gerbils if you please. <removes large floppy hat>. I have been at a flower show most of the day and it was very hot and sticky. I couldn't see our new favourite flower Clitoria ternata anywhere apparently it is also known as Asian pigeon-wings.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/08/2025 17:37

Ooh, a flower show - growing or arranging?

Both although the winning arrangements in the competition marquee were already looking a bit sorry in the the heat. I am not sure what they will be like on Sunday which is the last day. I felt for their creators😦

ErrolTheDragon · 15/08/2025 18:08

Sorry you’ve also got sad stuff going on, Cher.💙

  • *Evening, all.

Funny week. I did galleon restoration on Monday, but then just lay on my bed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Not a great few days. Today I forced myself back to the other galleon to engage in hard labour. It was very hot outside. But I took my newly acquired bolster chisel and short handled lump hammer, and I got cracking.

Thank you so much @Boiledbeetle and @JanesLittleGirl

I’ve shifted all of it! It’s all in the angle, isn’t it. Although, sometimes it cleanly sliced off when I held the booster at 180 degrees, and sometimes I needed to hold it more vertically. Some bits were stubborn and have left the odd bit of residue but it’s flat.

I didn’t take any eye protection or gloves. Right hand a bit buggered again. Kept looking sideways and squinting so I didn’t blind myself.

Thank you so much!

I may ask for tips about bricklaying in a few days… 🙂

I'm so happy that you have cleared the mortar and that @Boiledbeetle 's and my (actually DH's) suggestions helped . DH does have one suggestion about the bricklaying. Get a bear shaped cookie cutter and when you have spread the mortar ready for the bricks, stamp it with the cutter. Nobody will see it but Bear will always be in the wall. Sending love and hugs.

Lovely...but you know that's not a bolster, don't you?Wink
Well done Swash, you really stuck at that task until you completed it, difficult though it was, and that must feel like a big achievement.

Jane's suggestion about the bear-shaped cookie cutter is beautiful, what a lovely thought.

Boiledbeetle · 15/08/2025 22:44

And if you click through the 5 attached quick enough it's the nearest I can get to animation.

We should just be glad it didn’t decide to show swashy trying to remove mortar with a large pillow.

Indeed! When the topic of bolsters first came up, the song 'Send me the pillow that you dream on' 'but only if it's a bolster' popped into my headGrin

Swashbuckled · 15/08/2025 23:21

Oh, hello; I didn’t see you all come in. I’ve been propping up the bar up in the candlelit corner.

Lovely idea, Jane. My only worry is squashing him when I set the brick. But this may be come clearer once I’ve done my apprenticeship.

Beautiful pictures, Boiled. It really did feel like that, today. Bear kept saying he was proud of me and shared my joy when sections sliced off cleanly. He loved a bacon sandwich. Love the animation, which I clicked through lots.

MarieDeGournay · 15/08/2025 23:39

Maybe you could inscribe either the word or a small image of a bear somewhere a bit hidden on the face of the wall, Swash, like the medieval masons did - I like this mark, it was probably an initial but it looks like two people with interesting hats dancingSmile

Although you can only add five images per post, if you put five in the following post you can click through all ten in the thread gallery. Then get ambitious and go for fifteen. Or become a megalomaniac and put five in each of the 1000 posts of a thread, and win an Oscar for best animated short.

Genuis!

Swashbuckled · 15/08/2025 23:46

How have they done that, Marie? It doesn’t look scratched in; it looks 3D.

I don't know, Swash - some of the mason's marks are very carefully chiselled, this one looks like it was scribed with a pointed tool, doesn't it? Possibly just a little 'Kilroy was here' mark, not intended to be seenSmile
