I'm sure between us all @Swashbuckled we can come up with a varied, and probably slightly insane, long list of things you could do once the house is finished.

Only slightly insane? 😉

For instance I'm currently doing something with tiny tiny pieces of lego.

It's not so much insane as driving me insane that's for sure!

It's going to be a cat according to the instructions. Assuming I don't lose too many of the pieces before I get to the end!

Thanks; that would be nice 😊

Whilst you are on the home renovating track, and all your tools, paint, covered in building crap clothes are all currently to hand is there anything that needs doing on the outside of your actual home/ garden that would be better done through the end of summer / start of autumn that you don't want to be sorting out in the middle of winter? Window frames need repainting? Flower beds need weeding, turning over? Anything need a good scrub down and hose down?

DH's family are the ultimate bodgers. We had an outbuilding that lost its roof many years ago. They threw a tarpaulin over a few cross beams, sprayed it with pitch and then spread straw over the pitch to look like thatch (it doesn't). A scruffy mess but it still keeps the weather out.

Boiledbeetle · 12/08/2025 22:09

I'm a builder so obviously a total bodger. I came up against one of my earlier bodges recently and lets just say I was most annoyed with me from 20 years ago!

Britinme · 12/08/2025 22:17

Swashy are you using an actual chisel of the kind you would use on wood, or is it a bolster (bigger, wider, sturdier)? It might be worth investing in a bolster for that kind of job. IANAB either but I remember using a club hammer and bolster years ago to chip cement off a wall where it had been used to adhere big old ceramic tiles.

AlexandraLeaving · 12/08/2025 22:18

Bessie and I dropped in to visit @MyrtleLion this evening, and I’m afraid we overstepped the boundaries a bit. I hope we didn’t squash you too much.

I did not know you were an actual builder! That is amazing.

I have an admiration for bodging; I admire the creative ingenuity at play. I’ve done some bits of pretty decent bodging myself the past few weeks and feel rather proud of how they’ve turned out. Impressed myself!

@Britinme

I have been using a normal
chisel. I didn’t know about bolster chisels. Have just googled and you might be right; this could be a worthwhile investment!

Thanks ☺️

Buy a lump hammer (one with a short shaft) to go with it if you've also just been using a normal hammer to hit your wood chisel.

Your poor chisels!

Thanks! I’ll get one of these as well.

My chisel is probably a bit shit and we’ve not particularly bonded.

I used to have better organised tools but it’s all gone by the wayside after moving house, and taking them to allotments that I no longer have.

I’ve come so far though with the few tools I do have. (And part of me wants to make do as I probably won’t use a lump hammer and a bolster again. But then buying them means I don’t have to pay someone else for the labour. So I will.) I'll give it a bash (🤣)

JanesLittleGirl · 12/08/2025 22:50

2lb lump hammer and a 4" bolster have to be the right tools for this job.

ETA I didn't realise earlier that you were trying to get the job done with actual chisels and hammers. It's a miracle that you have got as far as you have.

Apart from that, I am really happy that you want to do a good job for Bear.

Thank you! ☺️

Boily! Will you replenish the grapes? No, of course not.
Android! That’s my bed and my leg should be elevated!
Alexandra! Lovely to see you, and thanks for bringing Bessie… but it’s a little too comfy with you both next to me.

You’re all so entertaining, thank you!

Anyway, I am home!

Operation was at 1pm and took 3 hours. In a walking boot with crutches but the nerve block is still in place, and I had a bit of fentanyl at 5pm so I’m not (yet) in pain.

They wanted to send me home with just paracetamol, but it doesn’t work for me, so I have morphine for when the pain hits. Apparently paracetamol is a terrible painkiller, and only works for 1 in 4 people post-operatively, and barely 10% of people for chronic pain, even for headaches. Goodness knows why they bother prescribing it.

The walrus has been amazing and DSD has brought me salted dark chocolate, which is beyond adorable.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 12/08/2025 23:01

Hey, Myrtle! Glad to hear it's all gone so well.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 12/08/2025 23:05

Have to say I don't understand the bolsters & stuff, but good luck with the second galleon, Swashy.

Boily, is that cat going to be 3D? Cos I can't really see a cat there atm.

MarieDeGournay · 12/08/2025 23:06

Lovely to hear from you, Myrtle, thank you for updating us.
I'm glad you're being well taken care ofSmile

ErrolTheDragon · 12/08/2025 23:13

Goodnight Myrtle, hope you get some good sleep now.

And to everyone else too (well, a bit early for Britinme…is there anyone else not in the U.K./Irish timezone?)

Swashbuckled · 12/08/2025 23:14

Good to hear from you @MyrtleLion

Glad it went well and that you have pain relief and chocolate ❤️.

I am nocturnal…

MarieDeGournay · 12/08/2025 23:31

I've been doing a bit of building work myself - when tidying up after the real Bluestocking construction phase - my kitchen table has become a kitchen table again instead of a very small building site - I realised I had a whole lot of scraps, and an empty kitchen roll roll, so I thought I'd make one of those wonky turrets that some of you had on your dream housesSmile

I just spotted @Boiledbeetle out in the wild at a wedding, in a bridal outfit no less what a harlot

I think it might have been her relative she’d rather not talk about?
