You’re welcome to sanctuary here. Sparticat, Colin the Dachshund etc know the Friends not Food rule. Word of warning though, I’d stay clear of our labs too, though I’ve not seen any perturbing output from them recently.

Labs? What labs? Nothing to see here.

I'm getting ads for engagement rings and mattresses at the moment..Confused

Ratty, that is a disturbingly cute picture of 'innocence' - much will be forgiven you, even cable-chewing, because you look so cuteSmile

I feel as tired as an over-worked gerbil, so I'm going to bed.

G'night all, may the Dreamgerbils bring you dreams that will not appear in random ads on MN tomorrowGrin

ifIwerenotanandroid · 12/08/2025 00:22

It's just a perfectly normal hobby room at the Bluestocking.

Goodnight, Marie. Sweet dreams... evil laugh...

It is sadly true that adverts in the USA are overwhelmingly medical (and insurance and junk food). We really notice the difference when we watch British TV. Sometimes the adverts are for drugs for conditions we didn’t even know existed.

MyrtleLion · 12/08/2025 07:18

You have kept me very amused while waiting to be admitted.

A young man put his shoes on one of the chairs. I politely asked him to remove them so he took his shoes off. I objected again and he was very aggressive to me. Then he was called and put his shoes back on very slowly, which I can only assume is supposed to be intimidating.

When did young people become so horrible? It turned out his mum was with him, though of course he wouldn't sit next to her. She said nothing. I wonder if he's intimidating her.

Anyway, lovely to see you all. I'll be offline for a bit. The lion sleeps today.

MyrtleLion · 12/08/2025 07:26

And I've just been told I'm scheduled for surgery at 4pm. Which is really annoying because I've been nil by mouth since midnight. I don't mind coming in early for consent and anaesthetist discussions but it's not being able to even have a cup of tea. Particularly as I stopped eating at 6.30pm last night.

Bargerbil! A sip of water every hour please. I'll be reading my phone in the corner.

FuzzyPuffling · 12/08/2025 07:38

Sending love and every best best wish for today, Myrtle .
Bessie Badger and her helpful quokkas will be looking after you, even if you don't actually see them.

DeanElderberry · 12/08/2025 07:44

I am wary of saying this, but even though I have switched my adblocker off for MN, I - don't see any ads. Which, reading what you all say you see, seems like a good thing. Maybe the advancing waterfowl eat them?

Well that's bloody annoying!

Hopefully the time passes quickly, or you at least snooze through vast chunks of the day.

I have audiobooks, iPad, paperback and my phone. I wish I'd brought my knitting.

MyrtleLion · 12/08/2025 08:32

And MN is an endless source of entertainment.

Apparently the surgeon says I'll be home tonight. DH is miffed as he wanted to go to the restaurant by the river.

Can't he go there for lunch?

I hope you’ve got charging cables and/or a power pack?

And collect a doggy bag for you, for afterwards?

I have a double plug with a 2m and a 3m cable attached. Currently 100% on my phone and 78% on my iPad.

I have read all 72 open tabs for the Guardian stories I’ve collected over the last week.

I only have one more trending thread on MN to read. I am in danger of opening up the AIBU? forum…

I'm sorry they're making you wait till 4 Myrtle😒
If you get fed up reading things, or - as happens to me - just can't concentrate enough to read properly - I warmly recommend going back over old Bluestocking threads and looking at the Thread Gallery.
I've just picked the Frou-Frou thread at random from the ones listed below, and the images are so entertaining - so brilliant, so funny, so weird, and at that time AI was still giving you a mane! The most entertaining thing is wondering WTF were we talking about at the time to produce an image like that !

Here's one from the Frou-Frou thread, showing you in your Happy Place, which is where you need to go if the hours start draggingSmile

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/aug/06/animals-evolving-anteaters-future-of-humanity
It's the Guardian again, so you may have already read it. Do we have any anteaters at the Bluestocking?

Another brill article thank you - like the on about the evolution of sloths
[the alternative evolutionary path that didn't involve knitting needles and wool, that isWink]

Every day a school day at the Bluestocking, how lovely to be in the company of curious minds. 'Curious' in both senses of the word!
I'm off to google 'egg-laying monotremes', the -tremes bit has me puzzled, there's usually some way of guessing from just a nodding acquaintance with Latin and Greek..

There was a question on a TV quiz recently about which word describes.. something related to the sun, and the contestant did not choose the one that started with the word 'helio-'. I wondered how I manage to recognise so many Latin and Greek roots when I didn't learn either language at school.

I think things like that came under the heading of 'General Knowledge', which is soooooo not a thing these days, it's astonishing what people don't know!

MarieDeGournay · 12/08/2025 10:42

Well I've googled 'egg-laying monotremes' and it means 'egg-laying mammals' in which case it would have been better to write either 'monotremes' which we'd google, or 'egg-laying mammals', which we wouldn't have to google...
[by 'we' I mean people who don't already know what a monotreme is - I'm sure some Stockingers do know, because somebody here knows everything😁]

They are also often distinguished by distinctive head/jaw shapes, which can be very cute indeed, isn't that right, little Puggling?Smile

I'm proud that many years ago, driving through France with fella, I was able to work out which was unleaded petrol from a nodding acquaintance with Shakespeare and an old name for lead. And that fella trusted that I was right.
