NHS Fife tries to silence nurse - Sandie Peggie vs NHS Fife Health Board and Dr Beth Upton - thread #47

1000 replies

nauticant · 29/07/2025 11:43

Sandie Peggie, a nurse at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy (VH), has brought claims in the employment tribunal against her employer; Fife Health Board (the Board) and another employee, Dr B Upton. Ms Peggie’s claims are of sexual harassment, harassment related to a protected belief, indirect discrimination and victimisation. Dr Upton claims to be a transwoman, that is observed as male at birth but asserting a female gender identity.

The Employment Tribunal hearing started on Monday 3 February 2025 and was expected to last 2 weeks. However, after 2 weeks it was not complete and it adjourned part-heard. It resumed on 16 July and the last day of evidence had been intended to be 28 July with 2 days of submissions from counsel meaning that the hearing was to have ended on 30 July. However, it became apparent as the hearing progressed that this schedule wouldn't be followed. (Considerable understatement.)

The hearing commenced with Sandie Peggie giving evidence. Dr Beth Upton gave evidence from Thursday 6 February to Wednesday 12 February.

Access to view the hearing remotely was obtainable by sending an email request to [email protected] by 5pm on Wednesday 9 July. Detailed instructions were provided here:

Has anyone collected a compendium of Sad Times quotes?

I've got:

Sad Times
You can’t prove it
I’m kind
I’m a doctor - I’m honest
If only everyone was kind
We didn’t think he was leading us up the garden path
It’s on my birth certificate
You went for the 6th best option
Any sperm would be in a dead end with no eggs to fertilise

Paraphrasing in some as I can't be bothered to trawl through TT for the exact wording.
I'm sure there were other good ones but my mind is mush now.

@nomas I found one in minutes that managed to combine the tsunami with the twin towers.

I’m afraid you’re sorely mistaken if you think anyone’s tragedy is immune from dark humour.

Exactly. I'm not about to trawl the internet for disaster memes but I'm highly doubtful that any disaster/celebrity death has been exempt from memes. A quick Google would probably throw up plenty.
Everything is fair game online and why would any one particular disaster be exempt.
The poster claiming this is just ridiculous.

Given the jokes made after the 7/7 bombings the idea that there wouldn't have been black humour after the 2004 tsunami seems incredibly unlikely:
www.thetimes.com/travel/advice/laugh-we-nearly-died-nx5gn2mw9hh

Are they 7/7 ones racist memes about the victims?

Not just Fife but newsrooms do a lot of dark humour like that. The police are the worst. Was eye opening for me as a new reporter especially waiting around at crime scenes.

They stop doing it if you don’t act receptive to it though.

And that’s what is striking about the ‘jokes’ - Sandie copied and pasted those from Facebook into her friends group because she thought they’d find them shocking but funny. And they did. Not one of them complained or admonished her.

Which is why they aren't any better in that regard. And it seems crazy to me that advocating for men to undress with non consenting women is what apparently redeems them.

SOAS rebranded itself to simply SOAS to drop/distance itself from the oriental term a few years ago

To do that it would have to be SAS. The o stands for oriental. I think it is a pretence and performative that they have dropped the oriental.

I wouldn't actually be surprised if there's a thing going round social justice circles saying that "corner shop" is a racist term.

Two of my aunts (RIP) ran corner shops, and they were both persons of pallor.

Sad times.

There used to be a pop band called Cornershop. They were from Leicester. Their big hit was 'Brimful of Asha'

Glad to get back to normal life after this! So much garden/house/other day to day stuff neglected.

I'm going to start reading a big book to recover.

You think Pakistani patients would be happy knowing their doctor or nurse is sending 'Ps go home' memes?

Would you be happy if your doctor or nurse was sending racism memes about your ethnicity?

Or are you sitting in your ivory tower because you're part of the majority?

Again, how would anyone know what their nurses, bosses, bank managers etc say in their private chats with friends, and why should they know?

BeLemonNow · 29/07/2025 16:00

Found it weird NC using my alive/dead binary examples today. Of course someone else may have come up with it separately but if not and she or SM are a lurker on here or elsewhere grateful for a PM and say £100. Am skint,.seems reasonable. Ta.

Frankly if people are making me and my loved ones better, I wouldn't be thinking about what they do in their spare time.

Unless they were Upton, lying to me when I'd requested female provision, which would only be if it were for particular things. He can have a crack at my allergies, concussion or broken limbs any day.

Nachoinseachthu · 29/07/2025 16:01

prh47bridge · 29/07/2025 15:37

I have come across people who are very strong about policing the language used by others and would never dream of using a derogatory term themselves, who are amongst the most racist people I have ever met. They think they are good people, but they are completely blind to their own racism.

I have also come across people who still use terms that once used to be common but are now considered offensive, and who tell and laugh at racist jokes, but are completely colour blind. Their language may not be great, but they are good people.

I know which group I would rather be around.

This made me think of all my pious, progressive male colleagues who were somehow still insidiously patronising and superior; compared to my late partner, who was never caught uttering a feminist sentiment out loud in his life, and yet supported me, did 50%+ of the housework and steadfastly encouraged me to pursue my goals and dreams.

@WearyAuldWumman
I was scolded by a high school pupil one time, because I mentioned buying something from - wait for it - "the corner shop" and was told that I was being racist.

I wouldn't say "corner" is inherently racist, but it does have an edge to it.

I suppose that that's what you get with corners...

I recall that - for some reason - I was referring to the shop on the corner of the tenement block opposite our flat. It was owned by the same elderly [white] lady for years.

FannyCann · 29/07/2025 16:02

Fife NHS sounds utterly toxic

Wonder if the rest of the NHS (with their hundreds of thousands of employees) is any different?

SqueakyDinosaur · 29/07/2025 16:03

The 1984 question at the end was very odd. And for anyone who's read the book, there are a few lines from it that seem appropriate for the whole TWAW thing:

‘Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.’

'If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.'

'Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.'

Llamasarellovely · 29/07/2025 16:03

What a disgusting ideology this is, and how sad that even the lovely funny supportive atmosphere on these threads has been soured as a direct result of one man trying to impose his world view on an unwilling woman.
