"feminist transphobia is inextricably connected to feminist imperialism"

Every now and again there are threads on FWR where (some of us) enjoy the thrill of reading a Judith Butler word salad and pulling out quotable quotes.

Well here is something different, but IMO just as much fun to read, if you have a free moment in your busy day.

In today’s TERF rhetoric, Lewis observes “two centuries of ‘Anglo-Saxon’ feminist participation in eugenicist colonial efforts to clean up messy gender (and prostitution) in colonies like British India, where there were substantial populations of non-cisgender indigenes”. For Lewis, feminist transphobia is inextricably connected to feminist imperialism.

Sorry don't know why that posted twice

PermanentTemporary · 17/07/2025 18:34

Well, bit of a mixed bag. Plenty of thought provoking facts in that but all seen at an angle I don’t share. Also ‘British Supreme Court ruled that equal rights legislation applied exclusively to biological sex’ is a very distorted way of putting it.

I picked up the Lewis book in a radical bookshop the other day and put it down again. One day.

😤

IwantToRetire · 17/07/2025 18:52

I wonder what the eugenicist analysis is of a TRA saying “The only good terf is a ---- terf”

I am sure that a "Feminist Socialist" explanation will show how this is a valid liberationist position of a vulnerable minority threatened by feminist imperialism.

The TERF’s central claim, “that they are the real victims of marginalisation— is a classic settler colonial gesture, wherein victim and oppressor get reversed”.

So that would make men who enter single sex facilities brave freedom fighters? Remind me again, what are TERF's colonising? You'll have to shout your answer, our voices can't be heard apparently.

RedToothBrush · 17/07/2025 20:12

Well grifters are gonna grift.

TomPinch · 17/07/2025 20:18

This might seem like word salad too, but there needs to be a proper discussion about the problems with intersectionalism. Anyone at all with a bit of creativity can now define themselves as part of a disadvantaged group and accuse some other bunch of imperialism / colonialism / wherever using a bunch of emotive terms to shut down any discussion. Just like Lenin in 1917 or the peasant in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

RedToothBrush · 17/07/2025 20:24

A proper discussion?

Na this is a demonstration of power via the use of language to shut a lot of people out of the conversation and to over intellectualise.

People who find the word salad intimidating and don't have the status can not challenge it's contents.

It's contents are not the point. The point is precisely to appeal to a certain group who want to be loyal, look clever and have a certain cultural identity.

And the author knows this sells and they can make £££ from this cultural identity.

We do not need to have a discussion about this beyond saying.

No. You can't change sex. Next.

Correct.

TomPinch · 17/07/2025 21:00

You're right RedToothBrush - once the intersectional dalek is deployed it's impossible to have a proper discussion. I reckon that's how the entire theory - regardless of what it's applied to - is meant to work.

International Socialism is a journal published by the SWP

A woman has claimed she was subjected to a series of offensive questions about her sexual past and drinking habits after bringing an allegation of rape against a senior member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP).

The UK's most prominent far left organisation is already facing a major showdown over previous handling of separate rape accusations against a senior party figure – identified by the party only as Comrade Delta. This weekend up to 500 members could quit the Marxist group over the alleged whitewash.

The SWP's leadership is under fire for setting up a "kangaroo court" to hear allegations of rape and sexual misconduct dating back to 2008 against the man. The allegations made at the party's disputes committee were dismissed by a panel of seven and never passed on to the police

Oh wow, that's a humdinger of an addition to my collection of TRA 'mirroring' of critiques of trans ideology!
We've been pointing out for years that DARVO - deny, attack, reverse victim and offender - is one of the tactics of TRAs, and one which is frequently used in abusive relationships.

I suppose I should read the whole thing to contextualise that quote, but frankly I don't think I owe it that degree of academic rigour, so I'll just take it Thelnebriati's word for itSmile

Or just ignore them. Or ridicule them, if you're feeling less indulgent.

Yes, I would have said, "The UK Supreme Court confirmed that biological sex is one of the nine protected characteristics in equal rights legislation" was more accurate.

DrBlackbird · 18/07/2025 01:25

The TERF’s central claim, “that they are the real victims of marginalisation— is a classic settler colonial gesture, wherein victim and oppressor get reversed”.

Confusing. Seems to be suggesting women are colonial settlers claiming victim status. However, when have classic colonial settlers ever claimed to be victims? The whole ethos of colonisation is that the settlers were more culturally advanced than any indigenous populations. So in this case, it would be TRAs = colonial settlers. And TRAs who are reversing victim (women) and oppressor (TRAs).

The real victims of marginalisation? Why is it a competition? I'm marginalized so no one else can be. What idiocy is this?

JustSpeculation · 18/07/2025 06:26

Oh, and I'm aware this is not the "TERF'S" central claim.

SionnachRuadh · 18/07/2025 06:48

The "settler colonial" thing, I think, is supposed to say that terfs are Zionists and transwomen are Palestinians.

They used to be a bit more sophisticated than that. Not much, but a bit. Unsurprising though that the far left's most notorious MRA group would embrace Queer Theory.

This is a very attractive quote but there's no evidence it came from Dostoevsky.
