Terf Island - The book

I haven't got it yet, but this new book has impressed Helen Joyce, Sharron Davies and many others: I imagine Mumsnet gets a starring role.

Terf Island: How the UK Resisted Trans Ideology by Fiona McAnena. Director of campaigns, Sex Matters.

The United Kingdom has been labelled Terf Island - sometimes affectionately and sometimes contemptuously - for its successful resistance to transgender ideology.

This is the story of the brave and determined women who led the charge against trans activist demands which undermined their rights and jeopardised the physical and mental health of children. They dragged shadowy campaigns into the daylight, exposing the harm that would result, and the harm that had already been done. They forced policy change, set legal precedents and changed public opinion.

Fiona McAnena has been right there campaigning with them. Her unique insight and personal involvement brings to life the intimate human stories behind the movement to Keep Britain Terfy.

This extraordinary, inspiring, furious and sometimes funny account shows how a few women acting on their convictions turned back a tide which threatened to sweep away the rights their foremothers fought for.

You called?😊

DerryWitch · 13/08/2025 15:32

Sorry about the Brighton event. I will be at FiLiA all weekend, and on the Sunday morning I'm part of a panel talking about the FWS Supreme Court case. I'm not in the Friday evening book event because Spinifex decided to focus it on Sheila Jeffreys and her book.

Helen Joyce and I are doing an online launch tomorrow morning 14 August at 10am and it's free, and it will be recorded as well and put on the Spinifex YouTube channel. You can get the link to sign up for the live event via their website or X.

One more thing. I am collecting comments and reviews on my little book website terfisland dot com. If anyone objects tell me and I'll take yours off, but if anyone else wants to say which bits particularly struck you, or anything else about it, I'd love to hear it and put it on the site. Thanks all.

Thank you for explaining - I won’t be able to watch the online launch live but I’ll watch the recording.

Blackwell's has sold out for now. I've asked to be notified when/if they restock. My local Waterstone's said it's an American import they think so they can't get copies. I've emailed them back about Blackwell's having it.

You will be astonished to hear that is not accurate. The UK distributor is called Gazelles and they are now back in stock so bookshops can order it.

NotAtMyAge · 13/08/2025 15:41

@DerryWitch

Fiona, I'm waiting for my just despatched copy from Blackwell's to arrive imminently, but I notice that the only option shown on Amazon is the Kindle edition. Do you know whether they will be restocking the paperback? A lot of people do head for Amazon first.

Gazelle may need to update their website, currently saying it's available for preorder at £16.46 plus £3.99 postage or free if over £20.

I've passed the info. to Waterstone's. Told 'em I was informed by the author! I'll be completely outed if they're on this thread. Asked them to get back to me.

It's like they don't want to sell books.

they should be restocking, yes. but it's impossible for a small publisher to get any info from Amazon or any visibility of what's going on.

I originally ordered from Amazon in advance and then it became mysteriously unavailable

mb2512cat · 13/08/2025 20:43

Currently reading it on holiday. About half-way through. Very sobering reading. I’ll write a review and you are very welcome to add with my real name.

lcakethereforeIam · 19/08/2025 20:58

I chased up my email to Waterstone's. It'd been a week. They got back to me to tell me I could order it from Gazelles Book Service!

Twats!

Are Waterstones full on gender woo loons?

lcakethereforeIam · 19/08/2025 22:12

No more than the usual. I bought the Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht and Time to Think from them.

SinnerBoy · 20/08/2025 14:34

I'll try to remember to get it on Kindle tomorrow and leave a review. I'm on a job, waiting for a nebulous travel order to leave....

Bavariamaria · 29/08/2025 08:07

Amazon cancelled delivery and didn't give an expected date, so cancelled and reordered with Blackwell's. Evri have lost the parcel and Blackwell's done have it in stock now so have refunded me.

I will download the Kindle version!

lcakethereforeIam · 07/09/2025 18:10

I've just checked the Waterstone's website, more in hope than expectation, and it's only bloody listed! A little over £20 plus postage unless you buy something else to push the price over £25 then postage is free.

RobinEllacotStrike · 07/09/2025 18:32

Mine was delivered yesterday- from Amazon. I pre-ordered it months ago.

I suggested to the National Library of Scotland that they should acquire a copy of TERF Island by Fiona McAnena, despite it not being published in the UK (and therefore not covered by Legal Deposit), as it has relevance to Scotland and has Scottish content.
I received a swift and positive response saying that it would be acquired and processed as a priority and that I will be notified when it becomes available.
Could it be that the NLS has learnt a lesson from recent events?

I have also requested that Edinburgh Libraries acquire the book. No response so far …

Oh well done! What a smart move. It is in fact published in the UK and now being printed here too. When the NLS shut The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht out of the exhibition I wrote to the chief exec and chair, as I contributed a small chapter to that book. I offered them a copy of Terf Island - they didn’t reply to that.

I’ll be v interested to see if they come good on their promise to you. Thank you!

Seriestwo · 21/09/2025 00:22

My copy arrived this week so maybe I’ll take it to the book club Gussie is doing at NLS on 3rd October where you read and share your own book. I can ask them about their copy.

@DerryWitch just checking on Amazon, is there some shenaniganery going on? As well as the real book coming up there was this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0FQ47881J/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1LYEVUD1C1CB8&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.NuRbSBHicQIbRCEau9Rn68y3iUciDCicPYGl4tL55gk.GED3j7KuHOpuINdSJGmkV0eR6N9HB-w4fNeoh1-ofuY&dib_tag=se&keywords=terf+island&qid=1758544863&s=digital-text&sprefix=Terf+island+%2Cdigital-text%2C467&sr=1-2

Similar price, half the pages and a different name in addition to the author.
