Terf Island - The book

I haven't got it yet, but this new book has impressed Helen Joyce, Sharron Davies and many others: I imagine Mumsnet gets a starring role.

Terf Island: How the UK Resisted Trans Ideology by Fiona McAnena. Director of campaigns, Sex Matters.

The United Kingdom has been labelled Terf Island - sometimes affectionately and sometimes contemptuously - for its successful resistance to transgender ideology.

This is the story of the brave and determined women who led the charge against trans activist demands which undermined their rights and jeopardised the physical and mental health of children. They dragged shadowy campaigns into the daylight, exposing the harm that would result, and the harm that had already been done. They forced policy change, set legal precedents and changed public opinion.

Fiona McAnena has been right there campaigning with them. Her unique insight and personal involvement brings to life the intimate human stories behind the movement to Keep Britain Terfy.

This extraordinary, inspiring, furious and sometimes funny account shows how a few women acting on their convictions turned back a tide which threatened to sweep away the rights their foremothers fought for.

According to Amazon my copy will be delayed. Not sure if this is TRAs protesting in front of the delivery vans or overwhelming demand from the Terven (I think the latter).

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 08/08/2025 13:50

Got it on my Kindle!

Davros · 08/08/2025 13:54

I got mine from Primrose Hill Books in the end. Signed!

CompleteGinasaur · 08/08/2025 15:55

You must have got the last one - they're sold out now!

lcakethereforeIam · 08/08/2025 15:59

Still no sign of it one the Waterstone's website 😕

Keeps bringing up books about butterflies 🦋 So, today I learned butterflies, the terfiest of insects 😃

I think I'm going to email them, Waterstone's, to ask if they'll be stocking it. If enough people do perhaps they will.

NotAtMyAge · 08/08/2025 16:10

I pre-ordered on Amazon in June and it now says it will be arriving on Sunday. 👏

Davros · 08/08/2025 20:43

My original Amazon order was suddenly “delayed”. Hence snaffling the last copy from PHB. Sorry @CompleteGinasaur

WaterThyme · 09/08/2025 06:38

Blackwell’s are taking orders. They used to be an independent bookseller but were bought by Waterstones a few years back. They seem to have carried on running independently.

Wishiwasaway · 09/08/2025 06:46

@DerryWitch I just wanted to say I ordered the book on my kindle at the start of a long haul flight home from holiday. It took me 7 hours to read it and made it the most enjoyable long haul flight I have ever done! It is a fantastic read, eye opening. I am in awe of the women who entered this fight when there was everything to lose.

Bavariamaria · 09/08/2025 11:47

Cancelled Amazon and ordered from Blackwells. Also ordered random books from Primrose Hill the other day, came very quickly.

TidyDancer · 09/08/2025 12:10

Mine’s arriving tomorrow from Amazon, so they tell me. Very excited!

lcakethereforeIam · 09/08/2025 13:08

I'm going to order it from Blackwell's. I want a real copy. It's currently just over £17 including postage. The price for the paperback on Amazon is all over the place. It was just over £30 when I first looked a few days ago, £16-ish yesterday and now £20-odd. I can't order it on the on-line ordery thing used by my local bookshop

I found an Australian feminist publishing house which would publish the book and not police my language, and I'm very grateful to them.

I thought that had to be it - UK publishers seem to be generally captured?

Ironic no? Given what’s happened here in the UK vs what’s happening now in Aus..

It was listed at £20 when I pre-ordered in June, with the usual Amazon proviso I would pay less if the price dropped before dispatch. The invoice price for my copy which they say will arrive tomorrow is £17.21 including postage.

flyingbuttress43 · 09/08/2025 14:38

I ordered mine on 15 July from Amazon and was told it would be delivered by 10 August. Got and email today saying there had been shipping delays and they would email when they could deliver 😐But there was a cancel option, so I cancelled and have ordered from Blackwell's.

NotAtMyAge · 09/08/2025 15:14

@flyingbuttress43

No email, but the tracking button on my order still showed only that it had been ordered and not dispatched, so I've cancelled and ordered it from Blackwells at a whole 12p more than the Amazon price. Amazon gets enough of my money in any case and I have fond memories of spending hours in Blackwells as a student at Oxford in the 60s, happily reading my way through books I couldn't afford to buy, as well as buying the ones I had to have. Quite the most atmospheric shop I've ever used. 😊

AuntMunca · 09/08/2025 15:35

I downloaded Terf Island onto my Kindle and read it in a couple of sittings. I really enjoyed it. Some of it predated my involvement in terfdom, so was new to me and the later events were ones I was familiar with at the time but reading the book brought it home just how far we've come. Thoroughly recommended!

Grammarnut · 10/08/2025 15:10

I also downloaded it to my Kindle. Reading it now. Very instructive and pulls together threads of how things went that wasn't clear at the time. But we haven't won yet, their are battles to come.
Interestingly, I keep seeing things online saying trans ideology is on the way out and we will be faced with a new idiot ideology - but I can't see this. Trans was and is entirely illogical but also managed to become completely entrenched - a product of our age and internet connection?

This is really disappointing - I was excited about hearing Fiona discuss Terf Island & getting my copy signed but apparently she’s no longer going to be at the event Sad

MelOfTheRoses · 13/08/2025 13:10

I'm sorry to hear that Empressaurus. It sounded like it would have been a very enjoyable event.

Thanks @MelOfTheRoses. That’s what I thought - especially having been involved in a lot of the events the book talks about!

I’ve not long bought my copy, that’s a shame. I wonder why she’s cancelled? Maybe she’ll come here & explain what’s happened. 🤞

lcakethereforeIam · 13/08/2025 15:18

Blackwell's has sold out for now. I've asked to be notified when/if they restock. My local Waterstone's said it's an American import they think so they can't get copies. I've emailed them back about Blackwell's having it.

Actually she’s on the thread, isn’t she, so I hope so!
