https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/07/13/rape-survivor-gisele-pelicot-legion-honour-france/

'Gisèle Pelicot will receive the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest civic order, for her bravery in the fight against sexual violence.
Ms Pelicot, 72, became a figurehead for the global feminist struggle after waiving her anonymity in the trial of Dominique Pelicot, her former husband, and 50 other defendants who were accused of drugging and raping her repeatedly over the course of a decade.
At the time, Ms Pelicot’s lawyer told the court that she had waived her anonymity so that her perpetrators be known publicly, insisting that “shame must change sides” in sexual violence cases, and her image became famous worldwide.'

'The Légion d’honneur is the most prestigious national order of merit recognising outstanding military and civilian service to France and its ideals.
Established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the honour has been held by some of France’s most notable figures, including Josephine Baker, the French Resistance spy and performer, and Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president.'

Fantastic to see her honoured for her bravery.

As she said, shame must change sides.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 13/07/2025 17:30

wow. 'shame must change sides' was such a brilliant way to frame the situation.

I'm so pleased she's being honoured this way

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 13/07/2025 18:11

I'm really delighted to read this news. She's an amazing woman and deserves any honour she's awarded. I hope all her attackers receive the disgust they deserve.

I've been surrounded by lovely men in my family all my life, from my dad, DH, my brothers and my sons, but I've also been raped twice and I'm all too aware of the rank misogyny that surrounds women in this world.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/07/2025 18:12

Fantastic.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 13/07/2025 18:19

I don't much like honours systems, which too often reward the wrong people, but this is a good use of an award. Giselle Pelicot, you deserve this recognition. Shame has changed sides, and you are honoured.

Boiledbeetle · 13/07/2025 18:20

I just got all emotional reading that.

She deserves it, she was so incredibly brave

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/07/2025 18:21

Utterly deserving and I am stunned by her eloquence and bravery.

The reality of far too many men’s treatment of women was highlighted by her.

Brava.

Reddog1 · 13/07/2025 18:22

Yes!!! She is ace.

Like Sarko? 🙄

The Légion d’honneur is a massive honour in France, though, And nobody merits it more than Gisèle Pelicot.

SternJoyousBee · 13/07/2025 18:24

She deserves this and so much more. Such a brave woman.

ArabellaScott · 13/07/2025 18:45

I'm very glad to see her given this recognition. It's heartening, and perhaps helps mark a shift in French political attitudes, which have in the past been less than favourable towards women.

She has turned the worst experience imaginable into a source of strength and courage and admiration. It was truly inspiring watching her as the case progressed and being awarded this honour helps underline that. Its a good and hopeful thing to have come out of horror.

Gisèle Pelicot is just one of many recipients of the Légion d'honneur today - e.g. Sylvie Vartan and Catherine Lara, as French music fans may have noted, are honoured for services to culture, entertainment etc.

Sometimes recipients elevate the honour they receive by giving true meaning to the word 'honour'. So it is with Gisèle Pelicot, Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. . Flowers

We are in Paris watching the Bastille Day celebrations and she is in a place of honour observing the march past . Brava indeed!
