The Booksmith team said on Instagram that Rowling’s new "women's fund" was the last straw. 🙄

I don't really care what some idiot bookshop in a foreign city is doing. Increasingly I just resent the leading role the US has taken in creating the fuck-up around gender ideology and want them to leave us alone, and leave MN alone.

I know that isn't a constructive way to feel. But this fight for women's rights is so raw and exhausting that dredging up every faraway instance of idiot bigotry just seems like a form of self-harm.

I read on another thread recently just how astonishingly recently the US gave to lesbians, gays and trans people the kind of protection against discrimination that was codified in the UK by the equality act in 2010 (and which I understand was also partly present in earlier bits of legislation that the equality act brought together?)

They are so behind us; inevitably that means they are also behind us in their reaction/self-correction in the face of the overreach of trans activism. I'm sick of the cultural imperialism which means that we have to experience our own trajectory in the light of their (currently fucking insane) politics.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 27/06/2025 07:41

Those that condemn her never once address any of the concerns she's highlighting.

'Her views have become more extreme over the years, with her recently referring to trans women as men on social media.'

What's extreme about that, they are men.

Such hysteria, always with the over the top hyperbole, and anti-women rhetoric. 🤯

Tiredofwhataboutery · 27/06/2025 07:41

I wonder if JKR is sobbing into her cornflakes this morning?

I think it’s a bit bonkers, does the local TRA crowd read enough ( outside of Reddit and X) to keep them in business. I suspect they will be broke in a year or two.

TheNightingalesStarling · 27/06/2025 07:41

US liberals... banning books is bad.
Also US liberals... except the books that don't agree with us obviously.

TheNightingalesStarling · 27/06/2025 07:43

On a side note... The Entertainer toy shop chain has never sold any Harry Potter merchandise due to religious reasons, and its never really effected their business.

334bu · 27/06/2025 07:43

I am sure JKR is really worried that her popularity is slipping. Oh wait she is still no 1 on Amazon today.

In August, she also perpetuated misinformation that Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif is a man

This bookshop obviously thinks supporting a man hitting women is laudable.

Good point.

Thanks for reminding me that I wanted to read the crime series she wrote under the name Robert Galbraith. I just reserved book one on the library's homepage.

Doubtful. It's a neighborhood bookstore in the Haight. It caters to those who live in that neighborhood and tourists visiting the Haight bc of its ties to US counterculture.

I'm not sure why this is even in the news. You can probably walk down the street and find another bookstore that sells JKR's books

Slightly OT but it really is insane that HP keeps topping the best seller charts after nearly THIRTY YEARS.

TRA are insistent that the new series is going to be universally shunned and cancelled after the first season....can't see it somehow.

borntobequiet · 27/06/2025 09:39

I’m sure their competitors will be delighted.

TheOtherRaven · 27/06/2025 09:59

It's the last straw that she has dared to enable women to access justice for their existing rights in law when these are harmed?

Out of their little tiny misogynist trees. Batshit.

Grammarnut · 27/06/2025 10:08

They interpret support for women as anti-trans. Nasty misogynists whose shop no woman (the real, biological sort) should shop in. I hope they go bankrupt. Apart from that we have our own problems and don't have the headspace for these idiots.

I presume because of the wizardry etc which is specifically shown to be wrong esp in Acts?
But I doubt they put out tweets etc saying why they don't sell that merchandise and doubtless direct shoppers who ask to another shop.

CrossPurposes · 27/06/2025 10:13

The book shop owners can do what they like but NBC journalists should be doing their jobs a little more critically.

This. It’s a business decision catering to its customer base.

😃yeah I'm sure she is!
It reminds me of a tweet of hers about people - in the USA, probably - burning her books. I'm paraphrasing, but from memory it went something like -
'every time one of my books is burnt, the royalties I got for it magically disappears from my bank account. And if it was a signed copy, one of my teeth falls out'.
I'm happy to be corrected if I've got that wrong - somebody somewhere must have complied The Collected Tweets of JKR - that would be a bestseller too!

I've heard a number of opponents grumbling that 'she must spend all her time tweeting' 'doesn't she have anything better to do than tweet?' etc.
They don't realise that JKR is Queen of, amongst many other things, Multitasking😄

I have never read a single word of a single book by JKR, so my huge admiration for her is entirely founded on what she says and what she does.

lcakethereforeIam · 27/06/2025 11:30

Wasn't sure where to post this. Even thought of starting a new thread! Then I saw 'books'!...'America'!...Good enough.

It's about the books in Mahmoud v Taylor, explained in the video, which has gone all the way to the Supreme Court. I'd heard about bookbans but knew very little about the titles involved. This brave, lovely lady goes through the ones that were involved in this case. She doesn't appear to be a frothing, homo/transphobic right winger. It's an entertaining and fair, imo, examination of the titles in the context of the parents objections and what the school was using them for.

Absolutely agree. Everything that comes out of the US is extreme and toxic whether it is right or the left.

It’s weirder than that; they disagree not with the contents of the book but with the way the author spends her money.

Do you agree with her telling people to take photos of people they 'think' are trans in toilets and posting those photos online? That's a vile thing to do. I think she's completely lost touch with reality living in Twitterland all day and night.
