NHS Policy Audit - working party -Thread #3

Original thread #1 here:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5291237-nhs-policy-audit-working-party?page=1
Thread #2:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5322494-nhs-policy-audit-working-party-thread-2

This is a thread about “keeping the receipts” on NHS Policies prior to the Supreme Court ruling on 16th April 2025.

Our working theory is that there were no single sex spaces for NHS Staff or Patients in the entire country before that date, having all been removed by stealth.

We are aiming to prove this by auditing websites and policies for all the UK trusts and using the results to raise public awareness.

As well as recording what has happened historically, the information will form a baseline so we can check which Trusts comply or defy the judgement in due course...

We are working around the country region by region. If you fancy getting involved in a bit of grassroots feminism then please do join in to help!?

Each trust takes about an hour to research and you can upload online without giving any personal details away. Comment below and we can give you the link to an online survey - it changes for each region.

Thanks soooo much to all the vipers who have helped so far and @twoloons for doing a great job with the thread wrangling!

Oh @YellowRoom , that is full on. I’m reading that and all I can think is sacred caste, sacred caste.

Please go do something lovely for your brain after all that.

That is appalling, YellowRoom

This is another long one sorry...

I've submitted Dorset Healthcare University. There's very little on the website but they seem to have their fingers in a lot of Trans pies. This one has sickened me.

National charity LGBT+ Network for Change has praised Dorset HealthCare’s Steps2Wellbeing service for its success and sensitivity in providing help for LGBT+ patients. And this learning will now be shared with a human rights organisation in Rwanda to ensure LGBT+ people there receive the support they need.

Link out to chest feeding info at La Leche, 'Trans men, trans women and non-binary individuals may choose to breastfeed or chest feed their babies further information available at...'

They're a member of LGBT+ Voices Dorset Forum which thanks Stonewall and Mermaids for their input.

CAMHS page on gender identity - 'Some people feel uncomfortable with the gender they were assigned at birth... '
'If you are referred to the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), the team there will talk to you about the nature of your gender identity and how you feel, and if it's applicable, about your wishes for physical intervention.'

The Trust staffs 'Over the Rainbow' - an NHS Initiative for the local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community'
'Not to be confused with the drag queens and kings that keep us company with our booze cruise Saturday nights, Gender Identity Dysmorphia (GID) is a term used to acknowledge a persons dissatisfaction with their biological gender... Affecting men women and children, GID can present itself in many different ways.'

Young Rainbows - on Over the Rainbow website
In 2008, the Young Rainbows Project (funded by the Terrence Higgins Trust) produced two pocket-size sexual health guides...
Young Rainbows Project is a peer led sexual health project for guys who like guys between the ages of 13 and 19 (!) in and around Dorset. Supported by Over the Rainbow (NHS LGBT drop-in centre) in Bournemouth and Terrence Higgins Trust. Young Rainbows no longer exists but the guides are still available here.
From the girls' guide - (I'll eat my hat if this wasn't written by a man):
The vagina is part of the female reproductive system, which is very different to the male. Firstly, all the reproductive system is inside the body, rather than dangling between your legs!
During sex, girls can orgasm like just guys can (oddly, in the guys guide, it doesn't say that men can orgasm just like women)
You may have heard of a term used before called female ejaculation. This can happen when a women orgasms but it doesn’t happen to all women and don’t worry if you don’t – you can still have a pleasurable sex life! Female ejaculation is basically a fluid that comes from a gland and is usually clear and odourless but don’t worry, it’s not you losing control of your bladder and peeing! Women who ejaculate can produce anywhere from a teaspoon to many tablespoons of liquid!

Over the Rainbow links out to Space Youth Project - part-funded by Nat. Lottery and Children in Need
Space Youth Project uses 'trans' as an umbrella term for those who are transgender, non-binary, genderqueer, genderfluid, agender, are of non-Western gender identities and those who have a trans history.
Mel is Space's Education Volunteer! She is a fully qualified teacher with over 20 years of experience, devoted to bringing LGBT+ inclusivity into the classroom. She offers workshops for education professionals on how to start that conversation with students.
With KS1 children, Mel uses picture books to talk about the fact that families can be different but still share the same love.
She gets KS2/3 children talking about gender and how we shouldn’t feel pressured to behave in a particular way because of it. She also uses picture books to introduce what it’s like to be transgender and talks about homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying and how to stop it.
Mel also offers staff training; 1:1 support for schools with a transitioning child; and year group assemblies on the theme of inclusivity for all ages.

Over the Rainbow also links out to Hopes Angels.
No age range specified - seems to be a few blokes in frocks wanting to 'offer support' to others. From their safeguarding policy. 'Children Act 1989 and 2004: Provides a framework for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.' - so I assume they would 'offer support' to children. Their safeguarding officer is a bloke in a frock.

Over the Rainbow is for all ages with a specific young person section. But it's all very colourful and jolly and it would be possible for a child to link up with some potentially dodgy fuckers via the available signposting. I picked out Space Youth Project and Hopes Angels but there is a lot of other stuff on there.

Oh and the Trust does let trans people into the accommodation of their choice.

Wow - thanks - I'm surprised the Trust has any time or head space left to do actual healthcare!

@FarriersGirl thanks so much for your efficient thread wrangling! I have set up forms all ready to go for both North West and Wales. Unfortunately @SeaStoat has been having terrible trouble with Wales and has had to send multiple requests to the Information Commissioner... so I reckon we move on to North West next and then we will have to do the best we can with Wales at the end. I mean refusing to release information communicates something...

Do you all need any extra help with the technical side of data extraction, import/export, format conversion, visualisation, and analysis; or workflow automation? Is there any busywork that might be amenable to automation so you can concentrate on more important things?

Thanks so much for your offer. We aren't near the visualisation stage but if you have some spare time and could help audit a trust or two we would be delighted to have your help

Thank you for this - I will send over a link to the audit form on the DM. The instruction are all on the form. Some trusts have what we are looking for on their website but a lot do not but previous FOI have been invaluable and a wider search on social media can be revealing. When you are ready if you delve into University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust that would be very helpful.

No problem we have a few left to do but should be ready to start the NW early next week. I'll post an update on here later today.

Fantastic work here. Thank you to all who are involved. Not much evidence so far, with honourable exceptions, of anything having changed after the SC judgement. I feel really sorry for anyone coming into contact with these zealots at work or as a patient. And the lack of awareness/ sensitivity or care for other female patients is horrific.

To be fair, I think that, on the frontlines the true zealots are few. I think that the original policies handed down were written by zealots, and occasionally there are individual zealots in individual trusts that add their own personal twist to them. However, for the most part I think they are cut and pasted together by people who assume that if the trust has a policy (that they are editing/updating) then someone, somewhere, has done the required due diligence. And/or they are people who can’t afford to lose their jobs if they speak up. The frontline staff are harmed by these policies as much as the patients, as we see from all the nursing-related tribunals.

Hello - I am also available to help - I messaged Knotty who said to put the offer up here so that I might be allocated a trust.

The Rainbow Badge scheme is Stonewall Law by the back door, without proper scrutiny. It gets no evaluation, and ends with unlawful and discriminatory policy recommendations, which include removing sex based language and encouraging men breast feeding. The feedback is given to an NHS trust in a meeting with a senior exec and gets adopted without critical thinking.

Staff are asked to sign up to a pledge. They think they are being kind. They do not understand the impact.

Here's how one trust describes it:
"Our teammates who wear a pride badge or lanyard have pledged that:

  • you can talk to me freely about difficulties you are facing and I will do my very best to find support for you
  • our organisation is a place of inclusion where we respect and celebrate LGBTQI+ patients and staff
  • I will challenge discrimination towards LGBTQI+ people in our organisation."

Rainbow badges also use survey results (small numbers of self selected staff) to make assertions about discrimination etc. It's rotten.

Another woman and I separately FOId most Engllish trusts on Rainbow Badges, and got the recommendation reports for many trusts on www.whatdotheyknow.com We weren't coordinating so may have missed some trusts. So you may find Rainbow Badge requests for your local trusts or the trusts you are analysing now. If you want any trusts we missed FOId on this, DM me.

Raibow Badges was funded by NHS England, and promoted strongly by Stonewall, the LGBT Foundation, NHS funders and Dr Michael Brady, National Advisor for LGBT Health, NHS England and NHS Improvement. Brady said in 2021:
‘The NHS Rainbow Badge has been one of the most successful and widespread initiatives in raising LGBT awareness across the NHS. The badges have received an enormous amount of interest, including participation from over 90% of NHS trusts within just 18 months of the project launching. This is largely thanks to the visionary work of Dr Mike Farquhar and colleagues at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. I am delighted that we’re able to build on this success by investing in Phase 2 of the project, to support delivery of wider objectives to improve the care and reduce inequalities for LGBT patients, as well as improving experience for LGBT staff. I am really pleased that this new partnership between the LGBT Foundation, Stonewall, LGBT Consortium, Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard and GLADD, all of whom have many years’ experience in this field, are taking this work forward.’

Some trusts are introducing similar badge schemes on race. DM me if you want info on this. This is the hierachy of the alphabetti and race over the disabled, the old, people with religious beliefs and women etc, encouraged by senior NHS leaders and funders.

The Rainbow Badges scheme is being extended into GP & dental practices, pharmacists & optometrists via Pride in Practice. It's backed and peomoted by some local authroties and integrated care boards (ICBs - successors to the clinical commissioning groups which fund care via GP practices in England).

ICBs are also funding work by LGBTQIA+ charities without safeguarding and contrary to Cass.

I remember that it was going to be dropped a few years ago, did they quietly row back on it?

teawamutu · 05/07/2025 13:24

@FarriersGirl just submitted Salisbury. I can take another if there are any unassigned.

Mipe · 05/07/2025 15:48

Hello @FarriersGirl, I have just submitted Torbay and South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust so I am ready for the next one 😀

FarriersGirl · 05/07/2025 16:10

@Mipe and @teawamutu Thank you both. We have just 2 left from the SW Mipe if you can pick up Sirona Care and Health, and Tea if you can do Wiltshire Health and Care. These 2 are both community health services commissioned by the NHS and delivered by private companies. We have had a few previously and are working through the form as normal. However you will probably find little on the website, there maybe some equalities info or reports. They can't be FOI'd so that is not a source. The one's I did, I ran some wider background checks and looked on their social media etc. Also in the first line of the jotform where it asks for the name add NOT NHS after the name so we know to distinguish them later on.

Just to say I've nearly finished Avon & Wiltshire Partnership, will get it over to you by end of tomorrow

teawamutu · 05/07/2025 20:00

@FarriersGirl I've submitted Wiltshire Health & Care - there was pretty much nothing, as you predicted. Please assign me a NW trust or two as soon as you like 😀

Opinionpolecat · 06/07/2025 11:08

I've submitted University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust.

Their policies include such crackers as this explanation of "intersex" people's identity:
“This document equally applies to those individuals who have intersex conditions, i.e. they do not see themselves as either male or female as well as trans and non-binary."

Always make sure your face isn't being transphobic:
“Treat trans and non-binary individuals respectfully as you would for all patients, being mindful of the personal journey they may have been on. You can show respect by being relaxed and courteous, avoiding negative facial reactions”

And remember that biology is only very rarely relevant in healthcare:
“In most healthcare situations, people’s assigned sex at birth is irrelevant, although there are a few exceptions. Asking inappropriate questions about a person’s assigned sex at birth is invasive and potentially very hurtful”

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2025 14:13

There was a clear attempt a few years back to blur DSDs with “non binary” gender identity - it mostly wasn’t successful but I’m wary of it.

FarriersGirl · 06/07/2025 17:03

Good grief I'm glad I don't live in Dorset although my own home trust isn't much better🙄

FarriersGirl · 06/07/2025 17:08

OK Vipers I have out gallivanting today so will try and find time to do the trust list for the NW this evening and hopefully post tomorrow morning. @teawamutu your request is noted thanks.
