DH's sibling has just come out as a man. She is 26 and autistic, lives at home with mum, spends life on the Internet, got kicked out of school at 16 etc etc She has plans to go overseas and transition in germany where apparently you can get surgeries on the public health system while living with her grandpa. Her mum is fully supportive of this.

How should I react to all this. Should I start referring to him as my brother in law? What usually happens after people come out. I assume they progress to hormones and surgery but honestly based on what I read, Germany is quite resistant to health tourists who never paid in even if they are citizens. Are people really happy identifying as another gender when they wouldn't look like the other gender?

You identify as having a degree. That's legitimate. Did you go to a RG imaginary university? Did you wear blue or pink when you graduated?

Yes it was RG. Uhhh... I wore umm... blue. Pink doesn't suit me!

I think this has been standard Mumsnet parenting protocol since its inception over 20 years ago.

Although I think there were women arguing that feminism had gone too far back then too.

True. It was more or less 20 years ago that I was buying dolls for my DC (18 if we're being fussy.)
But I'm not sure what that has to do with their gender ID?

Would you like an honorary degree from MN? I think I'm qualified to award you one. I have a MN mug and everything.

Sorry. Please forgive me. You can have an imaginary degree too. Or an honorary one. Both are valid.

Imaginary degrees are degrees.

I don’t feel victimised by biology, no. As far as you know, science works, men/the patriarchy aren’t responsible for period cramps - are they?

Nobody forces us to have children and take maternity leave, that’s the benefit of choice.

How do you make that choice though?

By entirely abstaining from sex, which is pretty good? Or by taking ALL the responsibility for contraception within a sexual relationship? By altering your hormones / cycle to avoid it? Ensuring, somehow, that you are never raped, which is impossible to ensure because you cannot control other people? By undergoing painful and traumatic procedures to terminate an accidental pregnancy that goes against your "choice"?

On the other hand, ask a man to make a "choice" about how to avoid being a father, especially in the accidental pregnancy scenario. Their choice is to...just not be one.

Yes we have choices around reproduction and our lives and careers. But we still have to take the action to ensure we are able to stick to those choices, where men wouldn't. And that is entirely down to our biology.

This Greer? Hilarious, yeah.

"If you spread your legs because he said ‘be nice to me and I’ll give you a job in a movie’ then I’m afraid that’s tantamount to consent, and it’s too late now to start whingeing about that."

You might find it distasteful (though she’s certainly not boring), but she’s making the point that that scenario does involve a form of consent. It isn’t the same as being overpowered and raped at knifepoint in a dark alley, is it?

You’re the one who doesn’t want women to be regarded as victims. You may not agree with her (and I’m not sure I do either); but her whole thing is a form of feminism which also doesn’t pretend women have no agency either (which I’d have thought you’d approve of?)

It's amazing what you can learn at the university of MN.
