He was going to ban skirts.

Parental feedback was not sought initially, but they've had plenty of it since the change was announced!

My opinion. Police the children effectively if they're not wearing it properly. Don't punish the girls who are following the rules.

No idea but women shouldn't need to adjust their dress or behavior for the benefit of the males.

If you wouldn't wear cut-out shorts with arse on display when picking your way through a post-apocalyptic landscape, then why do you think they are worn when other people are around?

Dwimmer · 06/06/2025 21:02

Grammarnut · 06/06/2025 20:57

But skirts are a normal part of girls' clothing and if they prefer them - even with thick black tights - they should not be made to wear trousers. Also, trousers are more likely to show leaks during menstruation - which this man has certainly not thought about.

Black trousers wouldn’t show leaks any more than a black skirt would. Girls might also prefer to wear jeans I don’t know a single school that has jeans as part of school uniform.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/06/2025 21:03

If girls want to continue to be allowed to wear skirts, they could maybe try not rolling them up so much. Just a thought.

Which is exactly why not including skirts in school uniform is a good idea.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/06/2025 21:05

Also, the same girls who allegedly hate wearing trousers turn up to non-uniform days wearing joggers. Or leggings (even less suitable for period days, I'd have thought).

Like I said on the first page, my school has a hideous kilt as the skirt. Post Y8 none of the girls choose to wear it, they all wear trousers, even, presumably, when on their periods. I'm not convinced by this insistence that skirts are needed for periods.

You seem to think that young girls wearing crop tops and tiny shorts is liberating and feminist rather than a feature of patriarchy.

And I have no idea what you're talking about with joggers.

I had to ask my friend why my son was suddenly refusing grey tracksuit bottoms apparently it outlines genitals in an obvious manner

Honestly never looked so I didn't know 😳

At at least one PP school you would be considered a geek if you did that.

Grammarnut · 06/06/2025 21:10

Just a thought, but trousers are very outing during heavy periods where pads may be needed - bet HT hasn't thought of that either.

Yup I walked past the college today all the girls were in baggy joggers and trousers there was one solo girl in denim shorts but they were a reasonable length and had pattern tights underneath all perfectly covered up and suitable

So what is it about school uniform that makes them roll skirts to eye-watering heights

I didn't say I wouldn't, did I? Depends on the weather during the apocalypse.
Woman's choice, good for the wearer.
Arse on display and cleavage down to the waiste isn't a new thing, by the way.

Yes but you seem to think that it isn't for the benefit of men.

Why couldn’t they just make it so they have to wear floor length skirts?

My DD's school has a range of skirt lengths including quite long. I don't think it's unreasonable to stipulate skirts need to be at or below the knee.

The problem outlined has been that some schools then have to spend a precious amount of time enforcing the rule

Yeah but women and their needs don't matter, according to some even on here. And things to do with women's bodies and biology are disgusting and to be ashamed of.

I'm actually doubtful they are women as most women know how much more comfortable and convenient skirts and dresses can be in many situations. And how discriminatory that would be.

The issue is the man and the man's committee declaring skirts inappropriate and yet so many chose to overanalyse the length of the skirts and even support banning them
altogether. Since you have the "boys" option that's great.

Boys and girls have completely different anatomy in the skirt area. So may be make all boys and male teachers wear skirts and that way they'll get used to it and will stop perving at girls in skirts.

Runnersandtoms · 06/06/2025 21:24

Girls roll up their skirts for two reasons. 1, because some of them actively want to look sexy to boys and men and to 'prove' how grown up they are. 2, because the small number of girls who don't roll their skirts get bullied or teased about it. So most follow the crowd just to blend in.

It is not unreasonable to have a dress code in schools which protects children and teachers. Nobody is exaggerating, there are large numbers of girls walking around with skirts so short you can literally see their buttocks. And lots of them look uncomfortable (holding onto their bit of skirt with one hand at all times) which tells me they'd rather not but are bowing to peer pressure.

Staff do not need to be deliberately looking up girls skirts to see their underwear. It's right there, especially when going upstairs or sitting on the floor. This is not acceptable in a workplace, and is contrary to the school's duty of safeguarding.

I think having trousers for all is a more sensible choice, ideally they could offer different cuts to suit different body shapes.

noblegiraffe · 06/06/2025 21:26

And again posters on here displaying exactly the sort of behaviour that a headteacher might want to protect their staff from.

NameyChangey95 · 06/06/2025 21:28

Thank God. Someone has brought safeguarding back to the thread. Safeguarding of children trumps feminism.

TatteredAndTorn · 06/06/2025 21:29

Ifpicklesweretickles · 06/06/2025 10:57

Let them roll them, what's rhe big deal.
Stop policing the length of girls skirts or indeed girls skirts.

So if you bowled up to work in a skirt so short you were showing your knickers that that would be acceptable? This is no different. Yes wear what you want but whatever it is does need to be appropriate to the setting and it’s not appropriate for girls to be walking about in tiny skirts at school.

Personally I think he should have stuck to his guns about trousers. Solves the issue and teachers aren’t spending their day getting into rows about skirt length. PPs have said to address the issue with the offenders, however if they tell them to roll it down. They just roll them up again. If they send kids home they are vilified for that, often in the press. “Why is my child missing education because of a skirt length”. If male teachers point out skirt length they are accused of ogling/perving. It’s an impossible situation that schools can’t get right whatever they do. Just get rid of skirts.

We also need to work on denormalising that girls need to show off their bodies in this way all the time. You don’t get boys trying to constantly show off parts of heir body. Because there’s no social pressure to.

This one does. Doesn't seem to negativity impact results either.

You will inevitably be told that their bums are right there in trousers and they are distracting, etc. The issue is girls are objectified by men and whatever they do, they'll still be wrong. The issue is the men, not girls skirts.

You have to admit that there is a line to be drawn somewhere. You wouldn't allow a child to go to school naked, even if she really wanted to.

Control. They rebel against it. They understand that people that tell them that want to control them in a way they don't control men.

They do, nobody except some posters on here has seen what they describe. Shortish skirts above the knee yes. Skirts that show pants or sanpro, no. People that look to see it don't have good intentions.
