And activists are not happy.

'The proposals to restrict trans members’ engagement in internal democratic procedures - including by blocking trans women from standing in All Women’s Shortlists, excluding them from National Women’s Conferences, and preventing them standing as Women’s Officers'

Easier to stop women being heard than to stand up to men

It's taken for people to be deemed right wing...far right... reform to win local elections...for labour to get to this point. What the fuck was the last 7 years!? A glitch in the matrix?? The be kind movement has alot to answer for

It's taken the incredible For Women Scotland and the courts. I don't think Reform have much to do with it- shall we not give them the credit? Labour have been looking for a credible ferret to reverse on and now they have one.

orangegato · 20/05/2025 07:50

Fucked if they go with women only, fucked if they let men in, and fucked if they cancel it. They really have backed themselves into a tight corner here, delicious.

Yep. I'd suggest their only credible option is to hold the conference and have it women only.

Let the noisy activists make noise.

@ArabellaScott it’s funny how cowards are already on about ditching it or postponing it. Grow a pair!!!! Someone in the Labour Party needs to speak up.

Greyskybluesky · 20/05/2025 08:53

Let the noisy activists make noise.

Yes! And then stand up to them firmly in public. This needs dealing with. Women are important.

WorriedMutha · 20/05/2025 08:56

When Starmer had to take on the Corbynites and apologise for antisemitism, the left had a tantrum but Labour didn't start cancelling the conference. Labour relished the fight to show they'd changed.
When the TRA have a tantrum, Starmer's hiding behind the sofa hoping it will magic itself away.
Zero justification for cancelling. You stand up to bullies. I hope the media go for him on this. No more fence sitting. They've indulged this wing at our expense so no pity from me.

The left eating itself again. Wonder what the unions will make of this? Either way, I’m loving it.

The unions will be all over it...they are completely captured.

PonyPatter44 · 20/05/2025 07:28

I think i might rejoin the party on the back of this, and start putting pressure on again.

I'd wait and see what happens in September first. You don't want to have them think membership will increase regardless of what they do.

What do you think this might be for Labours funding? Sir Slimy either has to piss off the electorate or the unions and he’s gone with the unions this time, but they pay the bills. Interesting.

orangegato · 20/05/2025 09:26

Edited as my picture wouldn’t attach.

sweetsardineface · 20/05/2025 09:52

If trade union leaders want to die on this hill, they had better brace themselves for even more members leaving and the rise of new unions that actually do what they’re supposed to do.

Unison is proposing to break the law.

Scout2016 · 20/05/2025 10:28

Does anyone know what happened to Lily Madigan? Looks to have transitioned very young and publicly with a lot of fuss, legal action against school for not complying with affirmation...threw weight around in Labour party as young adult. Then seems to have disappeared.

As for current Labour, too little too late. Given his legal background Starmer must have known full well what the law was before the SC outcome and chosen to pretend otherwise and ignore it. It was fairly clear even to lay people. Smarmy coward.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 20/05/2025 10:30

The Telegraph is reporting the Labour Party is going to cancel its Women's Conference.

sweetsardineface · 20/05/2025 10:31

Then Unison will be sued. I’m sure their members will be delighted to see their subs being used to defend men in women’s change rooms and loos.

SionnachRuadh · 20/05/2025 10:35

If Labour, or the unions, want to have reserved trans seats or reserved trans events they can knock themselves out. The SC hasn't said they can't do that.

But that just goes back to why TRAs won't accept third spaces, but require entry to the women's space.

That would be a mistake, so there’s a good chance they will.

Giving in to these threats is to give in to terrorism. They need to go ahead and weather whatever storm these men create. It may take time and it may not be pleasant, but if it does go ahead they do harm the women or their conference, it will demonstrate perfectly where the real problem lies.

monktasmic · 20/05/2025 10:38

Conference looks like it’s going to be ‘fun’ or a bloodbath depending on your view.

There was a suggestion from a friend of some unpleasant behaviour, IIRC. Maybe felt best to keep out of the spotlight. Not a great loss to politics.

All we need is one enterprising Unison member to put in a complaint to the Certification Officer. The CO's job is literally to ensure that unions comply with the law, and they can be hit with pretty hefty fines if they don't.

Yep.

We're all quite aware of how trans activists respond when they are told 'no'.

It may be enlightening for the Labour membership more broadly to see it first hand.

Ugh

Mad Madigan takes me right back.

This person peaked me more than anyone.

I'm grateful to the labour party for their possibly empty words because we will have to see. They are not exactly reliable at the moment.

What happened to Madigan? I haven’t heard anything of him for ages.
