And activists are not happy.

'The proposals to restrict trans members’ engagement in internal democratic procedures - including by blocking trans women from standing in All Women’s Shortlists, excluding them from National Women’s Conferences, and preventing them standing as Women’s Officers'

'LabourList has seen a paper circulated to members of the party’s national executive committee, which warns of a “significant risk of a legal challenge” – as well as “protests, direct action and heightened security risks” if the women’s conference goes ahead as initially planned in Liverpool this September on the basis of attendee self-identification.'

Party to delay women’s conference and exclude trans people from women’s officer roles over Supreme court ruling – LabourList

'A Labour Women’s Declaration spokesperson said: “We are of course pleased that the party is finally aware that it must comply with the Equality Act. However, cancelling our conference for fear of protests against a women’s event, is not the answer.”
“We feel it would be a knee jerk reaction to cancel. We call on the NEC to consider very carefully such an incendiary action as cancelling the single major policy-making conference of the party which focuses on issues affecting women.
“We are shocked that hundreds of women in the Labour Party might be prevented from meeting at conference because the NEC would prefer to disadvantage all women rather than to exclude the very small number of trans-identified men who may wish to attend the women’s conference.'

Grief, this takes me back. 2018 when I left the Labour Party.

Ugh

Mad Madigan takes me right back.

This person peaked me more than anyone.

I'm grateful to the labour party for their possibly empty words because we will have to see. They are not exactly reliable at the moment.

Too little too late.

Let the bun fight begin.
The cancer needs flushing out of Labour. A good scrap will force the cowards off the fence.

Memo to Labour:

Listen to what Nadia Whittome is saying. Then do the opposite.

It's not rocket science.

Imnobody4 · 19/05/2025 23:08

Sorry I'm going down memory lane.

Jennifer James, 51, a Labour activist, set up the campaign this month to fund a legal challenge to the decision to open all-women shortlists up to “all self- defining women” regardless of their legal gender.
Two days after setting up the group, the names of Ms James, a former physics teacher from Liverpool, and dozens of other supporters appeared on a list compiled by members of a closed Facebook group called Labour Against Transphobia. The group is run by Aisling Musson, a political science student at the University of York and disabled students officer at the university’s students union. Its members include Angela Rayner, the shadow education secretary, and Wes Streeting, Labour MP for Ilford North.

Ah I remember the very first crowd funder and when Jennifer James came on here and called everyone “comrades” and it went down like a lead balloon

That LabourList headline;

"Party to delay women’s conference and exclude trans people from women’s officer roles over Supreme court ruling"

It's an incorrect headline. It will not exclude trans people, that would be discrimination, it excludes trans women (biological men). But presumably, once again that's because trans men (biological women) don't count.

orangegato · 20/05/2025 05:48

The left eating itself again. Wonder what the unions will make of this? Either way, I’m loving it.

EweSurname · 20/05/2025 06:29

Have they postponed the women’s conference or is this another way of just getting rid of it entirely, so they don’t have to exclude the men?

Meeting of the NEC today, I believe.

Either they have to have the women's conference be women only or they'll cancel it. Well, they may say 'delay/postpone'.

If they had done this 7 years ago when it all kicked off , probably none of the subsequent chain of events with women fighting back would have happened.
wasn’t this the exact thing why mumsnet got talking?

This bit annoyed me:
Risk of “protests, direct action and heightened security risks” if the women’s conference goes ahead as initially planned in Liverpool this September on the basis of attendee self-identification.

I think the security risks come if you actually dare make it women-only. Which is why we haven't had anything women-only for a decade.

Floisme · 20/05/2025 07:23

They should hold the conference, announce it’s what it says on the tin - women only - and pay for additional security. Also Starmer should stand outside the door wearing one of David Tennant’s ‘You will have to go through me first’ T shirts.

Go on, do it Labour, and I might vote for you again.

PonyPatter44 · 20/05/2025 07:28

I think i might rejoin the party on the back of this, and start putting pressure on again.

ArabellaScott · 20/05/2025 07:29

It seems a fork in the road moment.

Either Labour respect the law and back women, or they don't.

Well, according to the report they won't need additional security if they make it women only. If they make it self ID though they'll be besieged by angry feminists trying to drag the transwomen out. Or something.

It's taken for people to be deemed right wing...far right... reform to win local elections...for labour to get to this point. What the fuck was the last 7 years!? A glitch in the matrix?? The be kind movement has alot to answer for
