It’s been a while since I last saw everyone!

Welcome to everyone, regulars, lurkers, newly ventured in.

A place for women to discuss whatever takes their fancy, where the bar staff are attentive gerbils, Rosy the Red Panda is available for cuddles and all sweet things have no calories and all alcohol leaves the drinker slightly merry and hangover-free.

The Bluestocking Women's Pub, where brains can exist in a single state | Mumsnet

Welcome all. The booze here is minimally intoxicating, the food is calorie free and the staff are warm and cuddly. And if the thread title sounds nons...

Sorry, @FarriersGirl - I was just so happy not to have a finger that was swollen, red and throbbing.

DeanElderberry · 27/05/2025 11:58

Bean

Not forgetting Mr - in the bean category.

Magpiecomplex · 27/05/2025 12:34

I've "been" marking again all morning. Crossed another set off my list. Umpteen more to go... 🙄

FuzzyPuffling · 27/05/2025 12:56

Keep going Magpie. You might just come across a little gem in there somewhere. And I don't mean a lettuce.

Igmum · 27/05/2025 13:16

@MagpiecomplexI’ve just finished my current round of marking but the second years have an exam on Monday. Sighs.

Solidarity! Some of mine have a resit next week, so you can guess what I'll be doing.

Bean

Good one, Deano, but obscure..😄
Doesn't she [Sinéad (Bean = Mrs) de Valera] look swish in that photo? I only remember her as the Nation's Granny with silver hair who wrote children's books.

FuzzyPuffling · 27/05/2025 13:34

When I was a child we had several holidays in Ireland. Not having a car, we walked everywhere, which was quite tough on my little pre-teen legs.

Up one hill, on the 3 mile trek from the beach to the farm, there was written on the road in large white letters "Vote No1 Dev". This meant the breaking out of the chocolate! Hurrah!

My memory of de Valera.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/05/2025 13:36

My dad was a maths teacher, and I remember being allowed to help him mark exam papers, as a teenager. I wish it was something I could do now - a work-from-home job - but I don't have the qualifications.

DeanElderberry · 27/05/2025 13:41

When Dev, much loved father and grandfather, honoured (in some quarters) elder statesman was dying, it was in the last days of the school summer holidays and thousands of kids were praying that he'd last long enough that we'd get a day off school. The young are so heartless and self absorbed.

Here's another picture (from wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sin%C3%A9ad_de_Valera ) of Sinéad looking stylish, but in a more Celtic twilight-y way. I'm interested to see the 'bean' has been largely dropped - back in the day it was always used for her.

Eek. I look very like her.

y'know Puffers, it isn't a bad way to look!

The list of beans is impressive but I’d like to know how you’d enact some of them. Navy, French, broad are fine, but edamame?ConfusedGrin

Obvs, you have to mime popping them out of the shell and eating them. Extra points if you happen to have a kimono lying around.

Having DIY-ed all morning (including a trip into a town with nasty things like traffic lights), I was going to garden this afternoon but it's been v wet and windy.

Brains and Batshit's comment on the weather is to curl up tight on the comfiest sofa.

FuzzyPuffling · 27/05/2025 14:19

DH isn't feeling well today and the weather is wet and windy, so it's staying in and watching telly this afternoon!

Good points:

  1. There's nothing I have to do.
  2. I have made biscuits, and a fish pie for tea
  3. The garden is enjoying the rain
  4. I don't have a dog to walk- the cats are happy indoors.

@Swashbuckled have missed what’s happened but sending hugs.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/05/2025 14:31

Pinto beans, black beans, cannellini beans, haricot beans, kidney beans....

FuzzyPuffling · 27/05/2025 14:32

Flageolet beans.
I expect they've already been mentioned as I am not a bean afficionado.

At least they are easy to mime, just do playing a recorder.

Not so easy to guess, probably.

That one is at least doable, but you’d need to explain to the small child what one was.
pinto entails galloping around neighing without requiring the correct colouring.

its not a guessing game - mummy lounges around calling out words to the small child(ren) who have to actively be that bean till the next one. There were moments when I had parenting nailed.Grin
