Just saw this:

Helen Joyce @ HJoyceGender
Morning all! Guess where I'm off to this fine day - Broadcasting House to discuss the @ ForWomenScot judgment, 4 weeks on, on @ BBCWomansHour! Do listen in. I'm looking forward to debunking some shocking disinformation, and reminding an astonished world that Women Have Rights Too

[EDIT]

Yes, I know I put "Women's" instead of "Woman's" in the title

I would have liked Helen to ask Nuala about whether the Supreme Court Judgement has had any effect on BBC policies in respect of single sex spaces.

Ramblingnamechanger · 14/05/2025 21:15

But thank you Helen for getting our message out loud and clear.

rhywlodes · 14/05/2025 21:20

I am hearing on the grapevine that the BBC has been inundated with complaints for having Helen Joyce on.

So let's inundate them with positive feedback! I've just left a 'shit sandwich' type comment - HJ was fantastic/what the hell took you so long/ why was Nuala so scared unprepared/what an amazing and eloquent communicator HJ is!

Gnomegarden32 · 14/05/2025 21:22

The only, only bad thing about this dark period ending will be not getting to listen to Helen speak all the time

Hoydenish · 14/05/2025 21:26

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/05/2025 19:23

Fgs, @Brefugee , talk like an adult.

🤔

CarefulN0w · 14/05/2025 21:37

Commented. On the theme of following the law as it is written and not as it is imagined, how do the BBC think collecting a phone number and postal address along with name my and email address is proportionate data collection?

I’ve suggested Helen as a guest editor of the Today programme at the end of the year. That should lead to some cornflake spluttering.

I just put xxx and it seemed to work

Thank you

You can apologise all you like. We know you know.

Robin may not have been challenged in a toilet but I personally have swerved Robin in a toilet because whilst objectively knowing Robin means me no harm Robin is a lot bigger than me, doesn’t remotely pass and is quite intimidating in a small space for a woman who has been subject to male violence. But Robin doesn’t care about that. Robin made that quite clear on Woman’s Hour.

I lived in the same SW town as Robin and I can categorically state that Robin had a certain local notoriety and no-one believed for a second that it would be wise to challenge Robin.

Yes , big workplaces won't be much of a problem. Smaller places , and especially things like pubs , smaller clubs , restaurants Don't always, it depends, really how big they are.How old they are etc. It's not a strawman argument, because I'm not really making an argument.I'm just saying that in some situations for some people, this is going to make a difference to their lives.I also believe that is necessary and that they will have to make the necessary adjustments.Just that for some people is not going to be easy , that's all.

Big workplaces like universities are an issue. New buildings have gender neutral. Older ones don't. Trans policies all say use the toilet/showers you want to use. Some unis may have updated their policies but suspect most, like mine, have not.

Staff use same loos as students. So it's a workplace but I would not put myself as GC at work with HR.

But I think they'll wait and see if they're challenged and ignore the SC until then.

Helen has posted on Twix that she was happy overall with how she did in the interview but admits she wasn’t quite ready for the little boys in toilets gotcha. This is what she wrote on X:

If I had been ready, what I would have said is this: one of the most loathsome things about transactivism is the way it weaponises women's needs and vulnerabilities against us. It's women who do most childcare, and are most likely to have to bring a child to the loo with us.
^^
What Robin was saying was basically "mothers, if you want to be able to change a baby boy's nappy, we're going to make that difficult for you unless you accept grownass men in your toilets, changing rooms, rape-crisis centres and absolutely everywhere else you get undressed.
^^
It’s despicable. This is one of the many reasons I say that transactivism is a rights-destroying creed - not worthy of respect in a democratic society. If you're a man, and the sign says F/ Female/ Women - STAY OUT. Even if we sometimes take our kids ot the loo with us.

x.com/HJoyceGender/status/1922665039741267979

Exactly. It's exploiting the sexism that women already suffer from, in order to increase it.

I had a similar thing a few years ago when an acquaintance said what would you say to the fact that you get to have your women only toilets, and it's a privilege that is denied transwomen.

Deeming women only loos, which women require in order to keep them safe from men, as a privilege to enjoy, rather other than a necessity for protection, was a real fucking eye opener. Especially as it's protection from the very men trying to repurpose it as an ego boosting validation tool.

And it's the same with Robin.

Leveraging the sexism which results in mostly women taking on the childcare in order to expose them to risk from men?

Misogyny at its most excruciatingly blind.

loveyouradvice · 14/05/2025 22:11

Helen as always absolutely brilliant and inspiring to listen to - just so very very clear and reasonable - wow!

And I've just surprised myself by listening to WH on Monday with a certain barrister with a very male voice... I thought the questions were appropriately challenging, and did show up the unreasonableness of his demands. So yes, surprised myself by being relatively impressed by the interviewer... but that may be a reflection of how low my expectations are!!

borntobequiet · 14/05/2025 22:24

I know I have a prejudice against what I think of as a “Radio 4” voice, even though it’s the station I most often listen to, and I’m particularly annoyed by a particular rather querulous tone that seems to be adopted by some female presenters. So I tend to get annoyed with them. On listening again, I thought Nuala was OK with Helen - she gave her time to speak and I supposed her questions were scripted. They were certainly far too long, but that’s fairly standard. But that last point! It seemed even worse the second time round. What were they thinking, unless to make the sex realist case for us?

Faffertea · 14/05/2025 22:42

I’m just reflecting on the fact that we know RMW monitors these boards and will know this is being discussed. And has reportedly been able to have posts deleted or threads pulled.
RMW has historically posted on threads about the Allison Bailey tribunal and on IAmSarah’s thread about her case for rape crisis centre being single sex. Actions which seemed at best unwise given RMW’s professional role in those cases.

And yet, on this thread, absolute radio silence.

Interesting.

Some are changing their policies already to comply with the law. Warwick Uni have just published their new policy:

I am hearing on the grapevine that the BBC has been inundated with complaints for having Helen Joyce on. I've just used their comments system to thank them for doing so but asked why this is the first time they've invited HJ — a journalist of the highest order and a brilliant communicator, involved in one of the hottest topics for women in the last decade — to particpate.

If you'd like to comment, please do:

I've just looked, It's been over a year (February last year) since RMW last posted.

I'm probably not the only one though who would like Robin to come back to discuss with the women on here whether or not Robin, as a member of the male sex with no GRC, plans to use the women's toilets and changing rooms etc going forward in direct contradiction to the Supreme Court ruling.

Absolutely shocked. Thought it was most captured uni ever to bekind inclusion. Though having had quite serious allegations in the past may have, as Helen pointed out, brought in the lawyers over the DEI managers.

I know!!! I'd listen to Helen reading the phonebook! So when all her aims for Sex Matters have been achieved, if she feels like starting a YouTube channel or podcast where she discusses economics, cricket, science fiction, gives hair tips, rates her favourite biscuits, tells Irish people living in England where they can buy Tayto or Brennans or Cidona, basically discusses ANYTHING...I WILL subscribe and enjoy it 😍

2021x · 15/05/2025 03:25

It was a great interview, I like it when people are tough on HJ because she can handle it, and they end up looking like berks.

I always want to ask the people supporting radical acceptance what is the threshold that you would consider acceptable before you realise that males presenting as women are a threat to women’s safety and fairness?

Wow. That is rather concerning for your community! I am sorry to hear this because it must have been concerning for anyone chancing using a space to then feel the added distress that nothing could be done.

Easy to believe when even women talking on anonymous, rule heavy threads are routinely deleted and prevented from posting.

WarriorN · 15/05/2025 06:17

Not been able to listen properly till now; agree with @nauticantthat Nuala was a good interviewer, setting out the challenges that HJ could expertly rebuke.

they have to be balanced and she gave similar challenge to RMW on Monday.

if anything I felt she was more flustered with RMR and more natural with HJ.

So I’ll have to eat my hat I guess
